' Sensor Class Hustory FRESIIMAN YEAR In September of 1943 slxty seven httle green eyed freshmen wandered through the corridors of Festus Hlgh Soon afterwards they were gxven a blg party by the sophomores Yes they were xmtlated And how' But they all survived and began enyoymg school life In December the freshmen were allowed to show thelr actmg ablllty by entertaxmng the upper classmen wlth three one-act plays Be- cause everyone seemed to enjoy the assembly they ventured to present another play to whlch the public was mvlted It proved to be SUCCESS ful and gamed many mee compllments As freshmen they took part 1n other 8Ct1Vl tles lsports soclal and 0thCI'W1S6l ln which the student body had mdulged The basketball squad that year chose Valeda Mltchell to be the freshman attendant to the Basketball Sweetheart The followmg class offlcers were elected to represent the freshman class Presxdent Allen Rowland vlce-preszdent Ed mund Dunning secretary treasurer Valeda Mxtchell sponsor Mlss Dorothy Thompson SOPHOMORE YEAR Once agam the class of 47 entered Festus I-hgh but this year they were a l1ttle more sure of themselves for after all thls was thelr second year ln school The flrst big event of thls year was the 1n1 naturally enJoyed Durmg their sophomore year they were called upon to edlt the Spokesman Thls was a b1g thr1ll as thls was the first year that the sophomore class put out the school paper But they wlllmgly took up thexr share of the re- sponslbllltxes around FH S That year Patsy Owen was chosen to repre sent the sophomore class at the crowmng of the Basketball Sweetheart and Allen Rowland was chosen as a pep squad leader The followlng class officers were chosen Presxdent Joe Powers vice presldent Jim Zoellner Secretary Jacqueline LaTurno treas urer Bob Null sponsor Miss Carrie Clalborne JUNIOR YEAR In the fall of 45 the Junior class numbering fxfty s1x once agam stepped forward and took their place among the students of Festus High They unmedlately took over the Coke and candy cases thus addlng a fair amount to the class treasury Because of then' eagerness to P3189 funds for the Jumor semor banquet and prom they spon sored the annual Chnstmas dance later gave a rummage sale whlch was qulte an event No more class act1v1t1es were engaged ln un t1l they presented a three act play entxtled H1 larlty House The play was a record breaking event as the net proceeds were the largest ever obtalned for a play presented ln Festus High School The banquet and prom given by the jumors were the hlghllghts of the year The banquet was gxven at the Harman House and enjoyed immensely by students and faculty The prom was given in the school gym whlch was clev erly converted mto a sprlng flower garden As junlors they showed outstandlng ablhtles m the fxeld of muslc Bob Keyton recexved first rating ln a plano solo at Cape G11-ardeau and also at Columbla Another talented Jumor who received a flrst ratmg in a flute duet at Cape and Columbia was Marjorie Harbour Carollne England a sophomore was the other member of the duet The basketball attendant for that year was Bxllie Jeanne Wehner The class officers were President Arthur Pfaff vlce-president Ed mund Dunmng secretary Betty Thomure treasurer B1ll1e Jeanne Wehner sponsors Miss Carrie Clalbome and Mlss Dorothy Statler SENIOR YEAR As the hot September sun shone down the class of 47 entered the doors of the1r beloved Alma Mater for the last of the many wonder ful and happy days of thelr hugh school careers This year the class was mcreased to a total number of seventy students whlch IS the larg est semor class ever enrolled ln Festus Hlgh School The class lmmedlately began workmg toward mg sufflcient funds for a class trip to New Or leans The flrst school affair was the sponsorlng of the Harvest Dance whxch was very success ful The next attractlon sponsored by the sen lors was the all school operetta Ask the Pro fessor The operetta was eminently successful These are but a few of the many affalrs pre sented by the senior class The Mothers Club was organlzed early ln the year and wlth thelr kmd assxstance money for the trip was raxsed qulckly Some of the out standlng entertainments presented by the Mothers Club were the Turkey Bmgo Tom Brenneman Breakfast and several beneflt shows Once again outstanding muslcal ab1l1ty was shown at Cape Glrardeau by Bob Keyton Mar gone Harbour and Allen Rowland All recelved fxrst ratmgs for then' selections This year Billle Jeanne Wehner was chosen Football Queen by the newly organized football squad while the basketball team elected Mary Ellen Frazler as Basketball Sweetheart.
