In Memoriaxn Dr. Benjarnin Moore Beckham For rn any years Dr. Beckharn, traveling through the hill country of Virginia, saw the finest youth of our state deprived of full opportunities for Christian nurture and educational development. Like our Master, his heart was moved by the sight of scattered sheep without a shepherd. He developed a vis i on of a school that would minister to the religious and educational needs of these young people. With the help of God and the Virginia Methodists, Ferrurn has come into existence. Memory of his tireless devotion and high spiritual values of life will ever live in the hearts of not only those who knew him, but also those who feel the touch of his influence. Le st we forget, Dr. Beckha1'n's last request was for the welfare of Ferrurn Junior College. Dr. Cabaniss Class of '25 -W iff T. The Student Government of Ferrum Junior College is a relatively new organization. It was established in 1955, and since that time has'been steadily progressing. Its purpose is basically that of promoting the general welfare of the students and upholding the high Christian ideals of the college. This is accomplished through the establishment ofa keen sense of loyalty and honor among the students. The Student Council of this organization is composed of nine members, the major ones being a president, vice-president, and a secretary-treasurer. Serving on the council with these three officers is a representative from each class, a representative from each dormitory, a day stud- ent representative, and the editor of the Student Handbook. In addition there is an advisory committee consisting of three faculty members nominated by the council and appointed by the Dean of the College. The three major officers of the organi - zation, together with this advisory committee and the Dean, constitute the Executive Council. In cases of emergency when it is not possible for the Student Council to act, the Executive Council has the authority to do so. Judicial authority is exercised bythe Student Council whenever a violation of the Honor Code occurs. Such acts as lying, cheating, stealing, and failure to report a breach of honor are con- sidered violations of the Honor System, Our Student Government Association is aseli-governing o r g anization which , attempts to develop high character and the ability of the student to accept responsi- ' bility both individually and collectively. In our college life there is a time for worship and service. It is the purpose of Ferrum to help stu- dents learn the value and joy of working in the church. Many students visit and work in neighboring churches as well as taking deputation trips to more distant churches in the Virginia Conference. This serves the double purpose of intr oduc ing the Christian college to the churches and also giving the student experiences in the churchunder guidance and direc- tion. Miss I1-by Members of the Associated Collegiate Press and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Sylvia Smith Ronald Harbin Editor Business Manager The 1957-58 s c hool year found The Iron Blade opening a wide contrast between its new and old standards. To begin with, it starte d with an inexperienced staff which had to work on the learn as you go basis. Se c ond , there appeared many new featured articles which brought the p ape r off a. formal stand and placed it as a student newspaper. Third, the columns of the edi- torial page were kept open to the student body in general, thus attempting to act as a true organ for expressing student's opinions . Fourth, The Iron Blade staff decided the best way to give more and better news and views would be to enlarge the size of the paper, from 9 x 12 lf2 to ll lf2 X 17. Now each issue of the paper is twice the size of the is sue s in former years. The Iron Blade began the year with the primary objective of higher quality news and feature writing. We feel this goal has been pas s e d and that in the future The Iron Blade will continue to climb for higher standards to remainapaper of the s tud e nt s , by the students, and for the students of Ferrurn Junior College. Returning with very few experien- ced workers, the Beacon Staff set out to accomplish two goals: to give the students of Ferrum their yearbook before school closed for the summer holidays and to give them a complete picture of the year's activities. The staff has wo rke d long and hard to p r e s e r v e some of our priceless memories and it is because of their efforts that theBea.con is now in your hands --- we hope that you like it. It was an up and down season for the Panthers as they were hit severely by injuries and their schedule included several schools who fielded their strongest teams in recent years. Among the powerhouses on the Ferrum schedule were: Mars Hill Junior College, 3rd ranked Junior College in the South last year, Wingate, Znd ranked Junior College in the South this year and the always powerful Newport News Apprentice School. The most outstanding game of the year was against Wesley Junior College of Deleware. The Panthers, being superbly coached byCoach Carson Barnes and his assistant Gene Evans, looked sharp in downing Wesley Junior College 26-0. In this game Simmons, Barrett, and Starnes were the main offensive players and Anderson, Spence, and Rose turned in a great game on defense. Although Ferrum had a l-7 season, the record doesn't show everything as the Panthers always played an aggressive game showing remarkable spirit and poise throughout the entire season. Starnes, T. Boggs, W. Stigall S. Mathias, E. Wilkerson, M. Nobles, J. Eckhart, R. Simmons, D. Howell, K. Hammack, J. Stevens, W. Ferguson, Coach Evans. The Ferrum Panthers experienced one of their finest seasons in recent years. The Panthers schedule included such powerhouses as Brevard Junior College, Mars Hill, and Hargraves Military Academy. Ferrum was led by co-captains Tex Boggs, the only returning letterrnan, and Ernie Wilk- enson. Probable starters for the season were Dick Simmons, C9 Coleman Starnes, F3 Ernie Wilk- enson, Fg Tex Boggs, GQ Charles Mathias, G3 Warren Fergurson, GQ Mike Nobles, F5 and Dennis Howell, F. Reserves Joe Stevens, FQ Ken Hammack, F5 Jerry Eckart, G, and W. Stigall, G. "The past season has been very fine and the team gave me everything they had. Our hustle and determination has kept us up with the best. The boys deserve a great deal of credit as this was the first freshman team in Ferrum History," remarked our coach, Mr. Gene Evans. The Panthers played great both in victory and defeat, and great things are expected of them next year. Coach Gene Evans deserves a great deal of credit for the fine job he has done. There's something startling about a bridge. The bridge itself is a modern man-made miracle. It represents the knowledge, skill and resources of many pe ople combined to give easy passage, to all who desire it, over an obstacle set up by Nature. We know that a bridge is just as safe and solid in the distance as it is in the foreground. Yet the c arne r a is unable to pierce the haze of distance and bring it into view. Human vision is much the sarne. We can plainly see the present. It is human nature to trust what we can see. That which we do not know and trust, we have a tendency to fear. But there is a way to ease that fear. We enter upon the bridge with confidence because we have faith that its builders completed their job well and that the part we can't see is also secure. Facing the future without fear also requires faith. Faith in ourselves. . .faith in our leaders. . .faith in the Strength that has brought us safely and success- fully through the doubts and dangers of the past. The measure of the faith we hold will also be the measure of achieve- ment and security in our future. Martins ville Nylon P1a.nt E.I.
