They feel the work they have done is but a minor contribution to the good of the school. It is only through the cooperation of faculty, student body, and community that this yearbook is possible. Another function of the Senior English class is the publishing of the Cats, Meow in cooperation with the Ferndale Enterprise, which furnished several columns of free space weekly. The Cats' Meow staff was changed about every six weeks so students could gain experience in all phases of journalism. Eight Club meetings each month at the respective advisors' rooms gave students a chance to participate with groups in which they were most interested. The Service Club sponsored an Old Clothes Day, sent greetings to ill members of the student body and ushered at programs. The Foreign Exchange Club held a Valentine Party and Christmas Party at the high school and started correspondence with foreign countries. The Stamp Club showed much interest in the special Ferndale cachet issued Air Mail week. Recreational Club initiated mixed sports. Photography Club developed several hun- dred pictures, some of which are shown in this book. Other clubs are discussed on pages devoted to their fields. HUME li00lVl PRE IDE 'I' ""' S- ,, -,.. E llllt CLASS Ill TIIRY We go with the well wishes of the Faculty, may we carry on the ideals which they have instilled in us. We leave the shelter of our friendships with school associates, but the memory of fellowship will ease the jolts on the rough road of life. We enter business and independent citizenship in a community that welcomes our coming. Let us bring to this situation the same interest, effort, and ability that we demonstrated during our four years at beloved Ferndale High. As Freshmen we came to high school eager to explore the store of knowledge and cooperate with other students to make this a span of life we would remember forever. After being entertained by the Sophomores, our first extra-curricular activity was a dance succeeding the football rally. The following October, a class party was held in the gym mainly to create better acquaintance and closer relationship between the members. Our Sophomore year found a group wiser in the ways of good sportsmanship, well mannered citizenship, and finer scholarship. It was then our turn to entertain the incoming Freshmen, which we did with appropriate ceremonies. Of more lasting things, we purchased a large picture of the Redwoods and hung it in the library in memory of Paul Christen who drowned in Eel River in the summer of 1935. Keith Nicholson received the advisors, cup for Future Farmers, a purely scholastic award. Our Junior year probably contained more activities than any other. Pioneer Days in California was the theme of one of the most successful Junior Proms ever held at Fern- dale. Later in the year the Junior assembly program was presented before the student body. Our last act of benefit to graduates of that year was the Junior-Senior Banquet held at the Ferndale Village Club, May 18. Frances Flowers received a medal for all- around activities. Campbell Miller was presented an athletic medal, a tennis cup and Block F sweater. Harlan Hansen won the California Bankers' award for FFA members. During the current year the class decided to buy a perpetual cup to be given to the most athletic girl every year, which was to be called the Alice Oliver cup, in memory of this classmate who died during her Sophomore year. Seniors have been represented in every organization in the school. They have profited from these many opportunities and also helped to build and strengthen the structure of the functions in which they participated. Awards received this year will be found on the pages devoted to the respective subjects. GRADUATION SPEECHES Science Transforming the World ....... Their Hrst demonstration of ability was the annual Junior Program, October 3. 'LNever Againfl a humorous skit, and several instrumental numbers provided an hour of entertainment for the Student Body. 'aFairyland" fit for elves was the theme of a successful Junior Prom November l3. A huge sunburst at the end of the gym added color and novelty to a well-decorated dancing floor. Taking their turn at entertaining, the Juniors played hosts at the Junior- Senior banquet May 19 at the Ferndale Village club. A well-cooked dinner and an evening of dancing left a friendly feeling between the two classes. For his high scholastic rating, Leonard Fleischer was awarded a gold medal, new Junior honor. The activities medal went to President Elmo Giulieri. Forty per cent of the Junior class are on the honor roll. Fifty per cent of the members of the first string A, B, C, and D basketball teams come from the class of ,39. These statistics show that next year's Senior class should have both a high scholastic rating and an active year of sports. Back Row: Miss Duryea ffldvisorl, H. Daoro, M. Olsen, W. Hunter, H. The Freshman Reception held September 10 was the first major event of the year. Carrying out the initiation in proper court procedure at the expense of the innocent Frosh, the Sophs afforded the audience many laughs. November 12 brought the second annual Sophomore program before an enthusiastic Student Body. The Thanksgiving theme was carried out in a well performed play, '4Another John Alden." Although depleted funds for future events made financial difficulty seem inevitable, members sponsored a show January 29 at the Hart Theatre, which increased the treasury totals fifteen dollars. This class is second in enrollment in music courses and first in F. F. A. membership. Back Row: Mr. Parsons fAdvisorJ, B. Perry, H. Mossi, J. Dahlquist, W. Flowers, Ra. Eseola 1PresidentJ , 0. Schoolmates were no longer less active, younger and downtrodden. The curriculum was no longer snap review work. Classrooms and teachers were unfamiliar, methods changed, and classmates more mature and capable. This was the opportunity to grow. Learning came both by precept and example. Soon today's Frosh will be setting the example. That is the challenge of education. Special attention was this year directed upon the Freshmen. enrolled in the smallest class in school. A get acquainted party at Centerville Beach given by the Girls' League served to increase the cooperation between upperclass students and first year girls. C and D divisions of basketball, C division of track, and Ramblers of football provided an opportunity for all lower class boys to train themselves for Varsity work in later years. A program December l8, carrying out the Radio Theme was their principal per- formance of the year, but Class of '40 members participated in every organization open to lower classmen. ln class scholarship averages, they ranked second, while in music enrollment they had the largest representation. The ever popular division, Girls' Glee, appeared on the same four programs as the boys, and also at Graduation. Although their weekly rehearsals were lessened one hour due to the boys' organization, the girls developed remarkable ability to sing comic, serious, and madrigal numbers with progress toward A Cappella style.
