A A S ) Q o Q i IN MEMORY OF.. . MR ROBERT BOERETLER The seniors of the Reflector staff decided that not only should this yearbook have a dedication but it should also have been a memorial page for a very special teacher who recently died. Mr. Robert Boerstler, “Mr. B”, was a Fern- dale graduate in the year 1946. He continued to be a part of Ferndale by coaching wres- tling, directing school plays, and teaching Social Studies to students at Ferndale. This years senior class was the last class in which he taught, so we would like to remem- ber “Mr. B” for his wild ties, his funny pic- tures on the boards, his unique stories, and for all the rewards for getting A’s. The mem- ories of Mr. B and all the things he did will remain with us for a very long time. In Memory Of DEDICATION MRS. NELLIE KOHUT The Reflector staff has decided among ourselves to dedicate the yearbook to someone who is always there after a game, a practice, or any other late night func- tion; someone who does a lot of the “dirty work” around the school with little recog- nition from the students. We dedicate this year’s Reflector to Mrs. Nellie Kohut. Mrs. Kohut’s ten years of service to the district has been appreci- ated by not only faculty and staff but also by those of us on the Reflector staff who have given her extra work because of late night meetings, opening doors and clean- ing up the “Burger King messes”. Mrs. Kohut, we thank you for all you have done, and your work is greatly appreciated. Dedication SCHOOL BOARD Shortly after the 1889 flood, the community of Fern- dale began to develop. The one-room wooden school, which opened in November of 1889 was replaced in 1912 with a new brick structure. The first graduating class of two students occurred in 1919. Since that time, the district has grown considerably and has gone through many physical and curriculum changes. The school board is the driving force behind these changes. Members are to be recognized and com- mended for their time and effort. Ferndale Area School District has come a long way since 1889 and will contin- ue to advance with the guidance and decisions of our present nine board members. Mr. Robert Bantly Secretary Mr. Walter C. Jones Mr. Harry Pyrich Mr. Robert Keim Mr. Eugene Burkett President Mr. James Riek Treasurer Mr. Joseph Ullery Mrs. Ruth Gilmore Secretary ADMINISTRA T ON High school students today are faced with problems that are mind-boggling. Many problems do exist at Ferndale Area High School, but for the majority of students, this is an exception rather than a rule. Young people today are chan- neling their energies toward worthwhile and productive en- deavors. This fact reveals that our administration does the best it can for the well being of Ferndale Area High School.-- Mr. Leonard Volk Mrs. JoAnn Armstrong Secretary Mrs. Mary Grace Pavlick Secretary Mr. Leonard Volk FACUL TY Every goal that is set and reached by a student has behind it the push of a special teacher. In the eyes of the Ferndale student body, all of our teachers are special. Our fac- ulty is more than just a great teaching staff. They care about their work and their stu- dents. Every Ferndale graduate will carry with them special memories of the Ferndale faculty. Special services include custodial staff, cafeteria workers and aides. These people provide essential services to us and keep our school running at a smooth pace. Students at- tending the prom were permitted to leave school at 1:30 to prepare for the memorable occasion about to comeforth. Excitement and eagerness accumulated as each student pre- pared for this special night. As dinner was served at Green Gables one would notice that the tension of the group was declining. The festivities continued with the theme song, “Heaven in Your Eyes”, which was being played by “Maiden America.” After the formal part of the prom, students went home to change into something com- fortable to attend the post prom held at the Y.M.C.A. 17 ■ JuudftK Kaye. So the Class of “89” decided to move into their last year with style and to have some fun along the way. Two fundraising events in which the Ju- nior class participated were the Candy Sale and the Magazine Sale. Thanks to a lot of community support and self-motivated stu- dents, 16,500 candy bars were sold to help students pay for their yearbooks, and a profit of over $5,000 dollars was turned in the sup- port the Jr. Sr. prom through magazine sales. The top Junior sellers of the Candy Sale were Jason Ribblett and Mike Schiff- hauer. Rebecca Smith and Dana Cooper were the top sellers in the Magazine Sale. One of the biggest events of a Junior’s year is the Prom. This year’s Prom was held on May 13 in the romantic atmosphere of Green Gables. It was quite a change to see everyone dressed in gowns and tuxes. At first, people felt a little awkward at the formal dinner dance, but after a while everyone relaxed and had a really fun time. After all, that’s what your Junior year is all about-right? Class Officers: Pres.- Jason Ribblett, V. Pres.- Anita Germaine, Sec.- Bert Hughes, Treas.- Tricia Fleegle. Many students become interested in things they never thought they would be. Career Day is held at the Johns- town War Memorial and is spon- sored by local Rotary Clubs. This year the Marching Band put in many hours of hard work. Most of their time was taken up with prac- tices, supporting the football team and fund raising. The many hours of rehearsal were well worth the effort when they saw their scores steadily rise over the three month competition season. The Band is planning a trip to Williamsburg, Virginia in the spring and has been working relentlessly to achieve that goal. Senior: Brian Kusch Auxiliary Percussion Senior: G. They, along with the ma- jorettes, learned how to twirl flags for an overall elegant ending to this year’s competitive band show. Practices were long and hard, but they paid off to some great performances. The baton twirlers of this year’s marching band had two special additions. The twirling assistance of Jenny Frombach and Dana Maldet, chosen from the elementary school. Jenny and Dana, as well as the rest of the squad, worked their way through many hard practices, long hours, and don’t forget, the forward rolls in the mud and gravel to achieve their goal of an excellent show. Steel FORENSIC TEAM The Forensic Teams have put a lot of time and hard work into writing and learn- ing their speeches this year. Forensics includes quite a variety of areas. Boys’ and Girls’ Extemporaneous speaking involves the com- petitors being given a topic and writing a 5-minute speech within a half an hour using available reference ma- terial. Dramatics involves choosing a speech, memoriz- ing it, and then acting it out. Informative speaking in- volves writing a speech on a particular topic, memorizing it and then presenting your facts to an audience and judges. Persuasive speaking involves writing a speech, usually on a controversial subject, memorizing it and then trying to persuade your audience to take your point of view. In Poetry and Prose, you pick a poem or novel ex- erpt and then “read” it cor- rectly. Informative: Row 1: C. Balog, L. Gerak, Row 2: B. Morih- latko, I). Schofield, J. Dayok, D. Although lights did not turn on at the right time, lines were forgotten, and sargeants ran into walls, the members en- joyed all of late night practices and their chance in the spot- light. LA.9.0. The 1987-88 SADD Club was a strong force in our community this year. They participated in a T-shirt sale, in-depth discussions with various groups, and the Student Activity Day at the Rich- land Mall where they showed videos and gave out pamphlets. Guest speakers were brought in to in- form the students about the deadly crime of driving while under the influ- ence of alcohol. The SADD Club would like to wish everyone a safe and sober future. One of their projects included the child finger-printing program at the elementary school in the fall. Six senior members of the club, in cooperation with the Ferndale Boro Police Department, finger printed the Kindergarten classes and any new ele- mentary students in the district. A second project involved collection of canned goods from the high school home rooms. These items were then donated to a local food pantry for the Christmas holi- days. Fundraisers went on throughout the year to help members toward their goal of attending the state convention at Hershey Park. The group of students that attended had a great time and now has fond memo- ries of new friends and great experiences. Row 1: B. Hughes, A. Pleskovic, T. Fleegle, D. Clark, B. Horner, S. Zanghi, A.
