Spirit of REFLECTOR Published by the Senior Class of Ferndale-Dale High School, Johnstown, Penna. The senior class of Ferndale-Dale High School has chosen to dedicate the 1963 Reflector to Mr. Lester Mitchell. Well-liked and honored by every member of our senior class, Mr. Mitchell is a vivid example of loyalty and patriotism. All of us have gained priceless knowledge from his acquaintance and from his daily classes. He has set an image and an ideal before us which each of us should strive to achieve. We would have a difficult time finding someone to match the high calibered personality and character such as that which he maintains. It is with great honor and pride that we, the senior class, salute our choice in patriotism, Mr. Mitchell. 3 OUR PRESIDENT As the result of several administrative changes in our school system, Ferndale- Dale has obtained a new supervising principal, Mr. Elmer Berkebile. Held in the highest esteem by the students and faculty alike, Mr. Berke- bile has devoted his excel- lent capabilities to the managing of the varied functions and duties of his office. Employing his recognized abilities, keen wit, and sincere willing- ness, he has fulfilled his responsibilities well. His counsel and advice are valued by many students, and he is never too busy to help those in need of assistance. The students are fortunate in having as their supervising prin- cipal a man whose loyalty has meant much to the progress of the school. HIS CABINET ... DR. CRUMBLINC MR. VARNER To bolster our administra- tion staff, Ferndale-Dale has a well qualified veteran of ed- ucation for its assistant super- vising principal. Dr. Russell Grumbling is a man whose ex- perience and knowledge en- ables him to aid in solving numerous problems that occur throughout the school year. Dedicated to the advancement of education. Dr. Grumbling has proven to be a valuable asset in the worthy accomplish- ments of our school. 4 THEIR SECRETARIES Mrs. Emma Koerbcr Miss Sandy Merberger Miss Pal Kiilinger MR. RODGERS Our school has profited from the arrival of a new- comer, Mr. Colbert Varner. Taking over the demanding position of principal, Mr. Varner quickly adapted to our system and effectively administered the school’s programs. His understand- ing of student problems and interest in the improvement of the school has earned him the respect of all. Without a doubt he is a man ably qualified to be second in command. Serving as Dale Junior High School Principal is Mr. Richard Rodgers. His presence at Dale has proven to be very beneficial. Mr. Rodgers has been instrumen- tal in developing the fine students he sends each year to the senior high school. With his competent guidance and supervision, he contrib- utes his abilities to the promising future of Fern- dale-Dale. 5 Dean Rummel, James Browning, Carl Harrison, Raymond Brehm. We are indeed very fortunate to have an extensive program of extra-curricular acivities. These activities provide the student with the opportunity to develop—not only scholastically —but also socially. Offering a wide and varied choice of club selections, our administrators aim to promote the interest of the student. Several of our clubs help to introduce their mem- bers and educate them in certain fields of future vocations. Among these are: Future Nurses of America, Future Teachers of America, the Library Club, and the JETS Club. Those people interested in journalism can join the staffs of the Courier or the Reflector in order to pursue their interests. The Key Club, Gymnastics Club, Varsity Club, Y-Teens, and the Pep Clubs are primarily geared to improving the school and sponsoring dances, bake sales, and school assemblies. The Student Council gives the student body a chance to voice opinions concerning problems which confront them and the school as a whole. For those students who are blessed with musical ability, vocal or instrumental, or those with a burning desire to find success on the stage, we have the band or chorus and the sophomore, junior, and senior plays. Each of these activities—clubs, band, chorus, newspaper—must have a faculty sponsor. We of the Reflector Staff sincerely feel that we should extend a vote of appreciation and heartfelt thanks to these teachers who gave of their time and effort in these endeavors. Editor Bill Courter and associate editors Sally Clay- comb and John Raysich worked to keep the school newspaper a successful publication. The Courier was again this year printed by the school commercial department rather than by a publish- ing company. Both news and feature articles such as club activities, honor achievements, sen- iors and sports, provide interesting reading. With new ideas and fine reporting the Courier, our school newspaper, remains one of the no- table activities of Ferndale-Dale. The assembly was presented by the 10 senior members who were inducted into the society the previous year. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY OFFICERS John Rychak—Vice President James Doyle—Treasurer Kathy Johnston—President Ollie Knighton—Secretary 69 The Ferndale-Dale Key Club has always maintained a reputation for being one of the most active organizations in the school. This year the club, which is under the sponsorship of the Greater Johnstown Kiwanis Club, kept busy throughout the school months. Projects included selling printed programs at the football games, a pie sale at Thanksgiving, selling refreshments at basketball games, and a candy sale dur- ing the month of February. Most of the money made from these highly successful campaigns was used to sponsor attendance at the annual Key Club Convention which was held in Harrisburg during April. This year the Pep Club has made several steps forward in improvement. The aim of the officers and advisor has been to strengthen the quality of the club. One of the major improve- ments was the institution of a point system based on athletic events. Although there are many flaws in the system to be worked out, it has worked well for the first year. Pins are awarded to the girls wrho reach a set number of points. Most of the projects of the club have been to support the cheerleaders and athletes by par- ticipating in pep assemblies, attending athletic events, and cheering. Improving more than ever, the band has been an asset to Ferndale-Dale High School. Although it has continued in its usual participation in pep rallies, football half-time shows and basketball games, the quality of the band s participation has risen. This years half-time shows revealed not only precision marching and good music, but also originality and imagination. Some of the highlights of the shows were a combined show with Franklin and a show utilizing the Pep Club. At pep rallies and basketball games the band has done much to add to the spirit of Ferndale- Dale. Along with these attributes go the concerts which the band has presented this year. They demonstrate variety in music and the versatility of the band. Other activities that the band participated in are band camp and parades. In order to raise money for their various activities, band members sold gift wrapping kits at Christmas time. Rewards for the members hard work are in the form of letters awarded at the end of the year and nominations for county, district or regional band. Replacing the band council are the officers of the band: Donna Hill, pres- ident; Pat Rummel, vice-president; Doug Barnes, treasurer; and Fern Harrison, secretary. 82 BAND Kneeling: Kay Lint, Earlene Rabel, Donna Ruckoskv, Cindy Hyland (mascot). The action por- trays the marriage plans of a well-to-do American fam- ily. Mr. McGhee, our director, was taken ill a week before the play, and Mr. Ficco and Mr. Slick stepped in to help with the production. The theme of the evening was “Star- dust? It was held on Friday, May 11, at Sun- nehanna Country Club. A delicious dinner of Roast Turkey or Fillet of Haddock was served, after which the traditional dance was held. The Atom-aires music combo provided us with some swinging dance music. 89 Ferndale-Dale has always produced first-rate athletic teams, and many awards are in our trophy cases to support this statement. The athletic teams that have been beaten by us were not passive or push-overs. One can feel proud when he realizes that Ferndale-Dale is a small school compared with the sizes of the ones it plays. Although representing a small school which is usually the underdog, Ferndale-Dale’s athletic aggregations have had many victorious seasons, but defeats are also taken in stride. Win or lose, our athletes never falter from displaying true sportsmanship and fighting spirit which have become a tradition here at Ferndale-Dale. When our stu- dents win at an athletic contest, they aren’t seeking individual glory or praise; but rather, they’re acquiring glory and recognition for their school. Much credit for our winning goes to the coaching staff and the student body. Behind every successful team there is a coach who has devoted long, tedious hours of his time in an effort to accomplish perfection. Besides teaching how to win, our coaches have also taught our teams how to accept defeats along with victories, which is a very important part of athletics. Because one is not athletically inclined, he should not disregard sports. A team needs support from its student body; thus, one can join the pep club or con- tribute in one way or another to help back the team. Whenever a student admires our trophy cases, filled with many awards, he will undoubtedly admit that the present and past athletes of our school have strived to make the athletic teams of Ferndale-Dale—THE BEST! The campaign started by battling the Richland Rams to a 7-7 deadlock; a tight contest down to the final whistle. Lou Scruggs accounted for all the points, scoring on a five yard run and then plung- ing in for the point after touchdown. The following week, win No. 1 was chalked up at United by an 18-13 score. In this game Wissinger scored twice on passes from McCall. In the final stanza, McCall scored what proved to be the winning touchdown on a two yard plunge. In our next two games we suf- fered losses at the hands of Conemaugh Township and Westmont by scores of 25-0 and 34-7. After these defeats our boys bounced back to trounce Franklin 26-0. Our win- ning streak was stopped again the next week at the Point where we encountered Triangle Area. The boys came out second best by the score of 27-14. Then Adams, our next opponent, continued the hold of jinx over us as they handed us an 18-7 setback. The boys never gave up hope as was shown by their 21-7 victory at Boswell. The season ended with a 27-0 reversal to Bishop McCort. Although our record wasn’t impressive, our boys gave their best to provide a thrilling season. Many individuals made out- standing performances for us in these games. The pros- pects for next year seem quite bright as many lettermen are returning. 94 Managers: Bob Gray, Bob Jones, Brian Speicher, Russ Knee Mr. Nyle Hershberger Assistant Mr. Jack Hyland Head Coach Mr. John Matsko Assistant F.-D. With these boys our junior high was able to compile a 6-1 record. Barry Wright, full- back, was the leading scorer and one of the most outstanding defensive players on the team. Many letter- men will be returning next fall; the prospects for a successful season look quite good. This year’s cheerleaders have worked very hard to stimulate “school spirit” among the student body. They have provided that stimulus to make our athletes victo- rious throughout the year. There was never a time when there occurred a lack of enthusiasm among them. Mrs. Anderson has produced another cheering squad which follows in the old Ferndale-Dale tradition—being the best! Ending the season with a 13-7 log, Coach Rigby had his best regular season record at Ferndale-Dale in his seven years of coaching. Throughout the campaign, the Stingers lost many close games, losing by two points to Indiana and three points to Westmont. Again as in most years past, the team lacked height, but this was made up for through aggressiveness and determination. Jim Doyle led the team in scoring followed by Jab Barnes, John Rychak, and Ollie Knighton. Ferndale-Dale managed to receive a berth of the District 6 Class A semi-finals. They played the Lions of Altoona at the Westmont gym; Altoona had to great an advantage in height as they banded the Stingers a 41-56 loss. A fine season is expected next year as a tall junior varsity team will be moving up. Managers: Bill Bennett, Tim Leberknight. Stand- ing: Bob Alt, Doug Barnes, Barry Ream. F.D.H.S. Many individuals made out- standing showings at our meets. Our Junior High squad is also developing future track stars. This past year the Junior High squad won the Somerset Invita- tional meet. Of the more than 80 ribbons given out, our team came home with more than 60. The varsity squad also made some fine showings against stiff competition. Next year’s squad will have many returning lettermen to the team and hopes are high for another successful season. The students should take a more active interest in their team. Although the record is not impressive, many of the grapplers showed much improvement during the season. Don Parke, Larry Varner, and Dick Oaks compiled the best records. Parke and Varner had 7-3 records, while Oaks was 6-3. Our biggest victory was a 30-21 trouncing over the Hilltoppers. Next season looks very bright since only three lettermen will be lost. Mr. Rigby works very hard to enable his students to develop a sound body which should accom- pany every sound mind.
