CLASS PROPHICCY The hot sun of a sultry Shanghai day was sinking low in the West. Dust was rising in clouds, as the crowds surged through the narrow street. The low shops skirting the thoroughfare on either side radiated the sun's rays with their ancient walls. The wheelbarrows that had rumhled through this quaint city for centuries contributed a picturesque touch to the scene, while adding an incessant rolling thunder. In desperation, I turned into a shop of curios to avoid the heat and eternal hum of the throngs. Ifpon entering the cool, soft shadows of the tiny shop I met the steady gaze of the proprietor, a llonolian. For an instant we remained thus. Then With the suave voice of the son of a Illanchu he broke the silence in perfect English, What is your pleasure my lord ? This is a shop of curios, is it not ? I tried to display the suavity characteristic of the Asiatic. 'fIt is, what can I do to aid you? the same steady glint in those almond eyes. VVhat have you for sale? I could not equal his cool hard gaze. He reached somewhere in the depths of the cabinets behind him to bring forth as if by magic, an array of vases--wonderful vases, carved with delicate beauty of Chinese workmanship. As he placed the vases on the counter I noticed his hands for the first time, long white hands with long powerful fingers, which flashed about with marvelous celerity. As I gazed spellbound these pale hands brought to my sight the small, beautiful statues of Chinese artisans, masterpieces to the Occidental eye. Finally, as a climax to all, beautifully worked stones appeared before me. The jewels glistened under my gaze. I scrutinized them closely, astounded at the beauty of this Eastern parade of precious stones. Seemingly charmed, I glanced at the Oriental to find him gazing intensely at an object held in those slim, muscular fingers. Attracted to the object, a green gleam greeted me through those fingers. The Ifasterner looked up at IHC, startled, as if a vision were just clearing from his eyes. It fascinates me, he murmured. Then as if a light had pierced the cloud he returned to his former self with a startled look, hastily concealing the tiny Buddah on his person with such speedy movements that I lost sight of it. What is it?l' I asked simply after the manner of a child excited over some newly discovered phenomenon. The oriental's furtive eyes met mine with the futile light of one caught in some snare. I had seen. I-Ie realized it. He motioned. Come, and disappeared behind a richly brocaded curtain hanging in the door between the shop and a room to the rear. Ifollowed. Upon emerging into the room the heavy odor of rich incense penetrated my nostrils. Closely I surveyed the surroundings in the dim light falling thru a small window. The room on all sides was covered with tapestries of magnificent beauty. Events of interest that claimed attention were: Purchasing of tokens of indes- cribable beauty called ringsg Junior Pilgrims excelled in basketballg a Reception given to the departing Senior hlembersg winning of cups from other lands, the debating team winning one and Norma Nlay showing honorable talent by winning another. . While attaining many difficult pinnacles a report was given out that a familiar ship was nearing harbor, the excitement was keen and after the Chief Wise Nlen Hay and Ixeller tested our knowledge we were bidden to go. Time passed and while journeying through markets and villages were met by a dusty messenger who imparted to us that we were desired at the Temple High School, and thus with fifty-five pilgrims we journeyed toward our destination. Familiar halls and faces greeted us and shortly orderly arrangement followed with the Wise Ladies Ruth and Grace Hetrick and the VVise Man Keller to watch over us while from the group, Dick Bracken, Ed. Dt-Frehn, Catherine Helsel, Ruth Henninger and Harvey Haughton were selected also to guide us. Ere much time passed, due to more experience and learning, certain pilgrims were chosen to represent the various functions. Dick Bracken was to watch over the Council Green while Mary Brant was to collect minutes of these meetings. Everett Nfcvicker, was to punish those members who disobeyed regulations. Nlartha Klitchell and her assistants with the aid of Wise Xlen Snyder and Blough edited a desirable pamphlet The Courier. Helen VVagner's untiring efforts and the help of Wise Klan Keller and assistants were responsible for 2 Book of Events The Rellectorf, Honor was brought to the Temple Ferndale by a worthy Pilgrim Clarence Hurrel when he journeyed afar to strange lands by the sea and was selected to play his instrument of Nlusic. Pilgrim. Jack Burgan accorded honors by his mastery of the art Oratory while Nlelba Lohr and Vernon Blum aided greatly in the formation of Debating. A most desirable confection was sold by the pilgrims to other members while those choosing to eat of tho delicacies of the cafeteria appeased their appitites every noon. It was here that the YVise Ladies and VVise Men had jolly times together. A play of extreme interest and success was nobly coached by Wise Lady Grace Herrick and given honorably for two nights. Following Commencement Exercises a trip of immeasurable enjoyment, great comfort concluded the period of instruction. The knowledge of Scrolls and Experiences at Ferndale being completed, the Class of 1930, after wishing other members of the Temple to be able to find the rich treasure Education departed to the shores of Higher Learning and the World of llany Occupations. --H fe.
