Some of the qualities they possess include a sincere interest in education, ability to think independently, and ability to work cooperatively. There is only one legal requirement for a school director, that he be a qualified voter in his distirct, but there is an important ethical requirement - a sincere and honest desire to conscientiously serve the school and to remember that schools exist for the bene- fit of boys and girls, DWIGHT H. CONE BUSINESS MANAGER MRS, RUBY FLAHERTY High School Secretary EVERETT C, SANDERS Administration This fine yearbook in your hands, unlike most material things of life, will not depreciate but will gain in value through the years, The events and incidents which this book may help you to recall willalso change in value. Perhaps some of your recent worries will later seem trivial or even laughable in the future, and some inconsequential experiences may sometime seem of great importance. Whatever may be your feelings, I hope that you will always recall your highschool days with satisfaction and pride. AndI particularly hope that Ferndale High School can always be proud of you. EVERETT C, SANDERS SUPERINTENDENT handles matters of business and school policy As the years pass, each group of peopleleave an imprint or set of footprints of their accom- plishments on the sands of time. Our current generation is no exception. During the past de- cade we have seen the Hydrogen Bomb, Atomic Submarine, Sputniks, Intercontinental Ballistic Missilesand the population explosion each leave an indelible mark. The generation emerging during the 1960's has a tremendous challenge to solve the problems associated with these events, Only an educated citizenry can cope effectively with the problems ahead. Only an educated citizenry can survive the challenges and leave their footprints as working solutions to their prob- ‘lems of this complex age. This is your chal- lenge, Class of 1961. Congratulations to the staff of this year's Aquila for this fine yearbook.. DONALD L, SPENCER PRINCIPAL DONALD L, SPENCER SENIOR SHERYL SAHNOW AND COUNSELOR MISS ANDERSON It is always with mingled feelings of joy andregret that we watch another class start to make their foot prints in the world outside of school. May this pictorial record remind you of your school days where lessons were learned, and dreams were dreamed in order to make you the citizens of tomorrow. OLGA ANDERSON, COUNSELOR SOPHOMORE GEORGE SCHAEFFER AND COUNSELOR MR, STONE As graduating Seniors your foot prints now join the thousands of others leading from Ferndale High School. No doubt, in the years ahead, with the aid of this fine annual, you will mentally retrace your steps and return to these buildings, their halls, and rooms. I sincerely hope that your stay with us will have helped make yours a more lasting foot print in the achievements of tomorrow. I hope also that all the good dreams and wishes we have shared as counselor and student come true. The training you have had here and the proud name you carry will help you along the way. In addition to presenting a fine winter concert the band played at an ex- change assembly with one of our Canadian neighbor schools. The band made a good showing at a contest at the Northwest District Band Contest held at Western Washington College. They did some marching, too, in the Blossom Time Parade and in the Old Settlers Picnic Parade. Probably the highlight of the year was the annual overnight trip to Canada. Frills, trills, and. . . This year largely through the efforts of Mrs. Ethel Crook, di- rector, orchestra membership has increased. In February the group received an excellent rating at Western Washington College. Each year several of the more advanced players take part in the mass orchestra at the college. Throughout this year the orchestra made numerous appearances including the Spring Concert and Vesper Service. In conclusion to the year's activities the orchestra played for Baccalaureate and Graduation. | Formals spell FH.S. orchestra FIRST ROW, L. to R.: S. Medearis, R. Countryman, C. Johnson, B. Barstad. line r DON SNYDAR Guard CURT KEMP MIKE IRVING JERRY REINKE Halfback End Halfback The Golden Eagles ended their football season successfully even though the first three games ended in defeats. The first two games were with traditional Skagit Valley foes that out-sized the young Eagles in every position. Sedro Woolley bested the Eagles 44-0. But then the next week Ferndale showed a lot of what it takes, scoring 13 against the big Seahawks, but still the Skagits prevailed 33-13. After their opening league loss to Mt. Baker 34-0, Ferndale then scored three consecutive League victories over Blaine, 13-0; Meridian, 13-7; and finally scoring more than 13 points, Nooksack 38-6. With a season record of 3-3, Lynden came to town ranked third state-wise and beat the Eagles 33-0. Even though Ferndale was beaten the Eagles showed the most desire against the Lions than in any other game during the season. Ferndale got about as close to scoring as you could against the unscored-upon Lions without doing it. It was first-and-goal-to-go on the five when the fourth play ended the ball lay on the 3-inch line. The team felt that these fine young men best lead the team; Captain Bob Tate, Best Blocker, Inspirational player, and Most Valuable Player; and LeRoy Sande, Best Tackler, even though he played only one half of one game. The coaches elected Mike Irving the Coach's Award for a fine student and player. Other seniors were Bender, Finney, Hager, Hardan, Hawkins, Hunter, Kemp, Reinke, Bill and Phil Roessel, Saab, and Willand. E Coach Randall will miss these seniors next year, but he feels that his 18 Varsity and 11 J. V.'s returning will do a good job. The Eagles finished the season with a 2-10 record in conference play, but the Juniors came through with three lettermen and the Sophomores two. This year's squad was composed entirely of inexperienced players with the exception of Captain LeRoy Sande. The regular starters were LeRoy Sande, Jerry Parker, Russ Barstad, Jerry Reinke, and Larry Arko; but Gary Gorsuch, Rod Wilson, Jerry Boykin, Curt Macy, and Erhardt Steinborn saw plenty of action. Next year the coaching staff, of head coach Stan Burkhalter and J V coach Bruce Randall, look for this experience to blossom into a challenging team for the conference title. This year our high school was honored by accepting the sportsmanship trophy for the 1959-60 season. Ferndale won five out of seven dual and triangle meets. The Mobil Gas Relays had 267 participants, which was the largest since it was started. Jonson, Beeman, Freeman, and Tuttle went to the District Meet at Everett and Gary Jonson won the high hurdles and a trip to the state meet at Pullman. The 1961 season should see the largest turnout in history and a good group of Sophomores and Juniors which should make Ferndale a strong contender in the next three years. Cross Country, the new major sport at Ferndale, had a good year participating against stiff competition. We had twelve meets, winning six and losing six. We notched victories over Bellingham, Sedro Wooley, Mt. Vernon, and Burlington. Next year we will be competing in the Northwest League. Jerry Parker, Clayton McCluskey, Bob Haynes, Bob Mauler, and Richard Phare won letters. Ron Dixon and John Hanson also entered every meet. This years squad, according to Coach Bob Casey Gates, should repeat as winners of the Whatcom County Baseball Championship. With a good nucleus of returning lettermen which includes Jerry Parker, LeRoy Sande, | Phil Roessel, Dave Hardan, Gary Gorsuch, and Russ Barstad, Coach Gates feels that Ferndale once again will come home with the trophy. ) The Junior Varsity will have a schedule of their own, which will include 10-12 games. Whatcom County has 7 chapters with Ferndale having the largest membership of 52. The F.F,A, participates in a tremendous number of activities throughout the 12 months of the year. The purposes are to meet the needs of a growing boy in the development of leadership, character, citizenship, thrift, and recreation with emphasis on learning to do by doing. The F.F. School spirit seemed to reach its peak while interest rapidly spread throughout the school. The main purpose of this organization is to support their teams in all sports. The members chose to wear gold sweaters and navy blue skirts for our school colors so that they might be singled out as a group. The halls once again rang out jolly greetings and buzzing confusion. Time flew fast and before we knew it, there we were at our first football game. Remember the pep assembly before our first league game in October. When those girls dressed up in players uniforms and had a turnout. (It almost seemed as if they didn't know what they were doing. ) As school continued, autumn faded into Indian Summer, bringing one of the most beautiful falls that we have seen for many years in Whatcom County. The nights began to get colder and Jack Frost nipped at our cold FEET as we cheered at the football games. Then came the annual carnival. Even though each class worked and hoped for the honor, the Juniors got King and Queen by selling the most tickets. The student play, SEVEN DREAMS” proved successful in climaxing our 1960 carnival. Since this was the year that a new president of the United States was elected, Mr. Gates’ history classes gave a political assembly on November second, before the national election. Football season screeched to a roaring halt with the last game of the season on November fourth. A pep rally and the burning of the Lynden Lion dummy started off the evening and the Homecoming Dance, with Queen Sue Garr and Princesses Pat Leninger and Sandi Anderson as Homecoming Royalty, made a joyful summary of our football season for this year. Soon it was time for our Thanksgiving vacation. We shall never forget the shocking surprise that we received upon our return to school to find our handsome English and French teacher with his beautiful red hair in a crew cut. WINTER Winter blew in on a snowless cloud this year and not a day of school was missed because of the weather. The last day of school before Christmas vacation we all met in the gym. The band played and we all joined in singing favorite carols. We were promised a candy cane if we could sing loud enough to raise the roof off the gym, but although the voices rang out loud and candy canes were promptly passed out, our dear old roof still stands. ' This year an all school play was put on by students. BULL IN A CHINA SHOP” was enjoyed by many during its two performances. Then there was the Valentine Dance on February tenth. Nadine and Larry were chosen as Valentine Sweet- hearts. Recall the Sadie Hawkins Dance? What a grand time we had tapping and skipping our feet to the music of the square dances. Styles went on a little different trend this year when the girls started wearing KNEE TICKLERS, short skirts of knee length. Of course, the boys remember that. : On February 28, eighty Juniors and Seniors made a trip to our state capitol in Olympia where they watched our state legislature in session and met our governor, Mr. Rosellini, On the way down, the group stopped at Seattle-Tacoma Airport and on the return trip they had dinner at Ivars in Seattle. One student wearily observed that the most outstanding thing he received from the trip was a backache from the long ride. Everyone agreed that it was an educational and enjoyable trip. When many of us began to come down with the annual Spring Fever, we knew then that Spring had come at last. The F.H.A. girls began to prepare for the mother-daughter banquet in April. May ushered in the excite- ment of the Junior Prom with its exotic, dreamlike theme, Bali Hi, Now here we are at the end of another school year. We'll miss the familiar FOOTSTEPS of the Seniors as the Juniors step up to take their place and the Sophomores become wise Juniors. So, with another of our school years nearly behind us we prepare to bid a final adieu to DEAR OLD FERNDALE HIGH, for some of us this will only be until next fall, but for the Seniors it will be forever. .
