During that time, one person has emerged among all the rest as a devoted and patient individual, seeking to guide us through a variety of school activities by his own personal enthusi- asm and verbal encouragement. His tireless efforts and helpful suggestions made on our behalf have left an indelible mark on each of us. Therefore, we of the Class of ’77 wish to dedicate our Traces yearbook to you, MR. HARVEY J. LA- COMBE. We truly appreciate all you have done for us and extend our best wishes for continued success and hap- piness in the years ahead. Thank you. The Class of ' ll You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late. -Ralph Waldo Emerson 17 FACULTY ADMINISTRATION Mr. Mario A. WEST HARTFORD AT FERMI HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR TALENTS SHINE THRU . The Class of 1977 has a lot of talented young people, and Brian Donelan had the good fortune to show his talents, not only in school but also on his own. As a fine ac- tor, he had taken part in all of the school plays at Fermi from 1974 through 1977. He continued to gain experience in the summer of 1976, when his ability to act land- ed him a job for L R Produc- tions, a resident company special- izing in semi-professional theater. With Brian’s ability, he was able to act out parts ranging from an aged suicidal Indian to a six year old girl as well as work back- stage in related areas of produc- tion. The team of actors and ac- tresses perf ormed three profes- sional shows that summer at the Yarmouth Playhouse; they were “Godspell,”“The Drunkard ” and “The Fantasticks.” Brian com- mented that he “was indeed fortu- nate” and was very “grateful to have been given the chance to try this interesting occupation.” One very unique member of the Fermi student body is Michelle Pontious and her unicycle riding hobby. Michelle has been riding for ten years and what began as a desire to be a clown has resulted in a relaxing “fun hobby.” Two memorable events recalled by Michelle were her twenty mile unicycle ride in a bike-a-thon and her participation in a centennial parade in Vermont where she rode the whole route. Unicycle riding offers many challenges according to Mi- chelle, including the many new people you meet who stop and chat with “the lady on the single wheel.” Another talented member of the senior class is Brian Moore. Brian started flying at the age of sixteen. Flying was something he had always wanted to do. Brian spent one long year and “a lot of money” on his flying lessons, before finally receiving his private license. As Brian says, “I like to fly simply to get away from it all. The only problem with me having my license is finding someone with enough guts to go up with me.” For Peggy Szeniawski, being president of Youth EARC (Enfield Association for Retarded Citizens) has not only allowed her many great opportunities, but it has also helped her to gain insight and understanding for the retarded. Through this organization, Peggy has come in contact with the State of Connecticut’s Youth-ARC and also the National Association. This organization has helped Peggy realize what gifts she has and what perspective she has adopted toward the retarded. Flowever, Peggy finds that the most rewarding opportunity was to be a part of the Saturday “Learning and Fun” program and also the Wednesday “Teen Social.” Both of these programs allow her to relate to mentally retarded and handicapped people in a very special way. To Peggy “being president of Youth EARC is a great experience that I wouldn’t want to miss.” P S 7 ' SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Left To Right Marci Secondo (Dir. of Act ), Denise Poirier (Sec.), Rosanne Giovanetti (V.Pres.), Doreen Blake (Pres.), Cindy Parchark (Treas.), Teri Stone (Hist.). Today, as near panic-stricken yet hopeful seniors, we share the same apprehension about facing new thresholds as we did upon entering Fermi as wary but eager sophomores. One difference, however, lies in our attitudes towards ourselves. Our three years at Fermi High have probably served us best as a course in human relations. We no longer feel the need to conform to a group ' s ideals, but rather sense the importance of acting upon our own beliefs and choices. This change is especially evident in the relationships we have formed here. We have learned that only by honestly treating each other as individuals may we be truly an individual ourselves. Realizing that this honesty is an integral and important part of any friendship, we, the class of 77, have strengthened our individuality and become a part of each other. From classes to dances, from debates to quiet conversations with friends, we have proved that we can indeed be part of a whole without losing our own individuality. No matter what future thresholds we confront, because of our past experiences with each other and knowledge of ourselves, we will achieve a personal happiness. Even though realism seems to be stressed as the primary consideration for our future plans, it is important not to give up our dreams, our beliefs, our idealism and most importantly, our individuality. This year has been one of great admiration. Our team went from a mediocre offense-defense combination to a highly pol- ished machine-type operation. Each part played its significant role in the total operation of every game. Many times, a record does not depict the true state of things; this is one of those cases. While we ended up with a record of 2- 11-1, we were “in” every game but two. That is, we were soundly beaten by two teams; all others were decided, in most cases, by one goal. It has been a pleasure to have the opportunity to work with such fine gentlemen-athletes and 1 would wish every team to have the kind of spirit which permeated this team. It was a job well done. During the 1976-1977 season, the team experienced extremes in weather, field conditions and varying qualities of team play through- out the league. Despite each condition, the Falcon pride continued to lead the way, as the field hockey team fought their way to a 4-6-2 record. All the games provided challenges for the players, and excite- ment for the spectators. With the introduction of a 1 5 minute sudden death overtime period in the league, Fermi emerged victorious in 3 of 5 encounters. Congratulations to Co-Captain’s Rosanne Captain and Chris Pieper for their fine display of leadership, and good luck to our nine graduating seniors. You each gave to Fermi Field Hockey in your own way, and you shall be remembered as a group who gave their all to a Fermi win. Coach Rosemary Sullivan Coach Rosemary Sullivan, Co-Capt. The Fermi Football team had its first taste of a winning season in its history with a record 5-2-2. This included a four game winning streak and the first time a Fermi team beat Hall High School, 13-7. The team was highlighted by an unpredictable offense and a solid, tough, impressive defense. The offense was led by Senior Halfback Stuart Sibley who led the area in scoring with 60 points and rushed for 100 yards. Despite key injuries midway in the season, the team was able to maintain unity and complete its season impressively. The seniors from the 1977 team would like to wish the 1978 Falcon team the best of luck next year and wish to thank Coaches Joe Nuccio, Joe Ochutti and Bill Barker for their time and effort in making the Falcon team of 1976-1977 the first winning football team in the school’s history! Who wants to participate in a sport with very little glory, a great deal of hard work and a lot of self discipline? The team members you see on this page are that type of athlete. This year’s team improved as the season progressed but some key meets were lost because of injuries. To a cross country runner, a won-loss record may not be as important as in other sports because a runner can be satisfied by lowering his times. Best of luck to the graduating seniors and a special thanks to the captains, Steve Delmarco and Brian Donelan, for a job well done. Co- captains Cathy Griffith and Sheryl Wild, along with Debbie Teske and Karen Pattersop, leave behind a hardworking group of girls. In a comparatively strong CC1L, this year’s record of 6 wins and 14 losses was indicative of a young, developing team with potential based on dedication for future strength in girls’ basketball at Fermi. Bettering the previous year’s record, the team can also look back on a thrilling come from behind victory over Manchester. This demonstrated the goal which can be attained when a team has its talented members unhampered by injuries. Jim Murphy, in his second year coaching the girls of Fermi, was assisted by Barbara Long as the J.V. coach. The team will miss the leadership of the 4 graduating seniors. However, the spirit and memories they leave behind will be carried on by a young team whose potential is just surfacing in the 1976-77 season. There is always the challenge to win-yet team unity and interscholastic competition, whether won or lost, is the source of memorable high school days. This year’s team finished for the second straight year in second place in the competitive CCIL. This year’s team has had a somewhat inconsis- tent season as they were plagued by injuries to key players in the beginning of the season. How- ever, in the second half of the season the Falcons have put it together and should peak for the Division 1 CIAC Tournament. Some of the high points of the season are a 3-2 win over Division II State Champs, South Wind- sor, and devastating 6-2 and 7-2 triumphs over Enfield. This year’s team will graduate 6 seniors: Glen Rasmussen, Bill Peltola, Bob Regan, Earl Reyn- olds, Tony Lombardi and Mark Edwards. The wrestling program at Fermi has been revitalized with the addi- tion of new head coach Joel Arnold. This year was used as a foundation to set a new course establishing a program which would gain in popular- ity and success. With wrestling being the fastest growing intcrscholastic sport in the nation, Fermi should be on its way as long as the athletes possess the internal fortitude and courage to accept the challenge of such a demanding sport. Returning veterans include senior co-captains John Lombardo and Jorge Diaz. Other promising veterans include Ralph Archetti, Stu King, Joe Backus, and Jerry Lovell. Mike Whalen is sure to balance off the rest of the squad “overfilling " the heavyweight class The success of wrestling at Fermi will remain in the hands of the athletes. With their support and hard work, we should quickly rise to the top of our league. This year’s team was made up of 5 seniors, 5 juniors, and 3 sophomores. It was a team beat by early season injuries to key personnel which resulted in a very poor start. Though the rough beginning hurt in the standings, the Falcons never quit, rebounding in the second half of the year to win one key game after another. This made it possible so that at this writing we are very close to making the State Tournament for the second season in a row. A coach could not ask for a better group to work with. They showed respect for referees, opposing players, and coaches at all times. They constantly battled back from one problem or another and never quit. They were true competitors. With a fine J.V. moving up and some talented juniors we look forword to a good season next year. However we will surely miss the graduation of 5 seniors. Eric Ruby, Doug Saley, and Tom Rooney were three big men who gave 1 10% all the time. Bill Slattery gave us great leadership on and off the court as our co-captain. His shooting won many games for us over the past two years. We must pay special tribute to Bill Baskerville, the finest player to have ever played at Fermi. We will not forget his shooting, rebounding, shotblocking or team leadership for a long, long, time. He was a true star (All-League, All area, All- State) in every possible sense. The 5 seniors will be missed. To these 5 guys with a great deal of class, we say thanks. This squad had 10 seniors, of which 7 had cheered together for 3 years. They will remember many exciting athletic contests which they helped promote. They will also remember the long hours of practice during the summer, the painting of posters, the selling of booster ribbons, the parades they marched in, the rallies, the baking for the players, the decorating of locker rooms, and finally, an advisor they could manipulate! These fine young ladies deserve a lot of credit for the good reputation given to Enrico Fermi around the state. They have always acted in the best interest of the school and have proven to be good sports. I want to make a special note in recognizing the outstand- ing efforts of this year’s co-captains, Rosanne Giovanetti and Gri Baldyga. These girls are not only outstanding school citizens, but are the hardest working and most devoted to their school and squad. 1 personally thank Rosy and Geri for all their help in making 1976-77 Fermi’s best in school spirit. Someone who gives more than asked to, the team; doesn’t just “come through” in a game situation; crisis leadership, not selfish; shows desire, has inter- nal drive. Doesn’t have to be the best athlete. The Most Valuable Player is one who has improved . . . with age and experience. She anticipates ahead of time so that she may interrupt someone’s strategy. (Missing from picture) Rosanne Captain. “Our appearance, our words, ourselves.” our actions are never greater than Gibran Imagine approaching the creation of a 200 page book . . to be seen by hundreds of critical eyes . . . without prior experience . and not getting “paid”? Each year, a group of energetic juniors and seniors proposes to do just that and, year after year, the result is always a superior Fermi TRACES yearbook. This year’s staff is no exception. The cooperative leadership of Sheryl Wild and Denise Poirier as co-editors results in hard work to meet deadlines, creativity of ideas to construct a unique book, and the fostering of warm relationships in a relaxed and pleasant atmo- sphere. It is a long, hard struggle to accomplish the task; the achievement is always a group effort; yet, in the end, it is the individual members who reap the intangible rewards of a job well done. A special salute to the Seniors on an “exceptional” book and a wish that you may “keep your faces always toward the sunshine, and the shadows will fall behind you.” Thanks to each of you on the ’77 staff for showing that " growth is the only real evidence of change.” Love you all — Mrs. Norby Ml III III 1 1 There is the deisre to find in sport a companionship with a kindred people Happiness lies not in the mere possession of money; it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative effort.
