Our dedicated Yearbook Moderator, Mr. Thomas Egan, constantly gave all of the Yearbook Staff members his patient guidance and support throughout the year. Mrs. Mary Sutter typed out the entire Senior Directory. Brother Carlos Griego, 0.P. photographed many of the pictures found in this book and helped out the Yearbook Staff in many other ways. The Fenwick Mothers' Club donated a new electric typewriter. Mr. Richard Neutzler pro- I, 7 0 Q vided information for the dedication article, while Sen- ior Tim Woods designed the book's cover and division pages. Staff members have worked many hours after school and many hours on Sunday mornings to com- plete the book. I thank all of these people and everyone else who helped the Yearbook Staff this year. I hope that this yearbook reflects the standard of excellence upon which Fenwick High School is built. -Andrew J. Straub Editor-In-Chief Dedication FATHER WILLIAM J. BERNACKI, O.P. For over 30 years, Father William J. Bernacki, O.P. has dedicated much of his time, talent, and energy in service to the Dominican Order and to Fenwick High School. Father was born in Chicago on December 18, 1924. He attended St. Tarcissus Grammar School and Taft High School. After serving in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946, Father attended Loyola University. He graduated from Loyola in 1949 with a B.S. degree in Commerce. In August of 1950, Father's service to the Dominican Order began when he entered the Order of Preachers. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 16, 1956. After completing his theological studies, Father worked with missionaries in Campti, Louisiana and then worked as a parish assistant at St. Joseph's Church in Ponchatoula, Louisiana. In 1959, Father began his service to Fenwick High School. He taught classes in theology, business law, eco- nomic geography, and civics. He also served as Fathers Club Moderator, Golf Coach, and School Business Man- ager. After earning a Masters degree in counseling from Loyola University, Father worked as a Fenwick Counselor for eleven years. He also helped to formulate Fenwick's first lay board, served on the board's finance and execu- tive committee, and served as Vice-Chairman of the Fen- wick Corporation. Father was Prior of St. Dominic's Priory in Oak Park when Fenwick's Dominicans moved from the school priory to the Dominican Priory in River Forest. Father also worked as a parish assistant at St. Vincent Ferrer Parish in River Forest for four years. In 1979, Father Bernacki was named Fenwick's eleventh principal. His success as principal is apparent. Under Father's leardership, new fund raising programs have begun. These programs have helped finance various school improvement projects. The Fenwick Walkathon, now a yearly tradition, began under Father's leadership in 1981. The first Walkathon raised enough money to completely replace the old gymnasium floor. Subse- quent Walkathons have raised money for other school improvements, including new laboratory and sports equipment and a new physics laboratory. Plans are now underway for the construction of new biology and chem- istry laboratories. Perhaps the culmination of Father Bernacki's many years of hard work came in 1984, when the U.S. Department of Education named Fenwick High School one of the top 60 private high schools in the United States. Father Bernacki, for all of your generous service to our school and for all the success our school has enjoyed under your leadership, the Yearbook Staff proudly dedi- cates this yearbook to you. We wish you success and fulfillment in your next ministry. ' I hm" SCATTU5 SEE A ff Mir ws , Qgff- gh -1. Walk-A-Thon This year, as in every other year the Mother's Club sponsored it, the WALK-A-THON was a huge suc- cess. The activity involves everyone in the school and allows the students to keep the costs of tuition down by getting people to "sponsor" them as they walk. Cash prizes were awarded to the most suc- l cessful fund-raisers, and all the students, parents, l and teachers had a day filled with fun and communi- ty spirit. These retreats are an intense, three-day long opportunity for the students to think about themselves and their relationshiop with God and others. Held at the Dominican Priory, the retreats are staffed by members of the Fenwick faculty and student assistants who help things run smoothly. These retreat experiences have produced such a favorable response among students and teachers that a KAIROS retreat will become a requirement as of next year. The team enjoyed success in three major areas of speech competition: Indi- vidual Events, Student Congress, and Lin- coln-Douglas Debate. Senior Carl Bergetz led the Friars in Individual Events, placing third in the Chicago Catholic League in Original Oratory, for his second straight trip to national competition. In Lincoln- Douglas debate, senior Anil D'Souza is currently ranked third in the Catholic League. Fenwick, however, has enjoyed its most success in Student Congress, where the Friars possess one of the best teams in the League. Led by seniors Rob Spartz, John Stompor, and Preston Jones, along with sophomore George Spaniak, the Friars are considered to be one of the best teams in the league. Thanks to the excellent coaching of Mr. Andrew Arellano, Miss Nancy Greco, and Mr. Greg Pauley, the Friars have enjoyed success this year. This coaching, along with underclassmen prospects Roy Pura, John Schleiter, George Spaniak, and Ed Simokitis, guarantee an even more pros- perous future. The Math Competition Club provides interested Fenwick students with an opportunity to compete in various math contests throughout the year. Guided by Mr. Roger Fin- nell, chairman ofthe mathematics department, the club sponsors lllinois Mathematics League, Atlantic-Pacific, and Calculus League, as well as various other contests throughout the year. Each year, several students from each grade level are chosen to represent Fenwick at the ICCTM State Math Contest. The Fenwick State Math Team, which finished among the top 15 teams in Illinois last year, is hoping for even greater success this year. J.E.T.S. Each year, the Junior Engineering Technical Society CJ.E.T.S.J sponsors competitive ex- aminations in Biology, Chemistry, Comput- ers, English, Graphics, Mathematics, and Physics. Each student competes in two of the seven subject areas, and the two highest scores in each area form the school's team score. Hundreds of high schools across the country participate in the J.E.T.S. contests. Under the leadership of Mr. Ramzi Farran, Fenwick captured first place in its district, defeating Oak Park River Forest, Holy Cross, and Mother Guerin High Schools. Going into regional competition, the Fenwick J.E.T.S. team was ranked among the top teams in the country. Biology Chemistry Computers English Graphics Mathematics Physics District J.E.T.S. Only the French Club accepted the challenge, and they complained that they had to quit after they finally gained the lead. Although this year's float was a mere step above a disaster, the builders enjoyed creating it. After all, why work on a weekend? French Club The 1986-87 school year proved to be a banner year for Fenwick's French Club. Headed by President Kevin Crotty, Vice-President Micheal Diver, Secretary Paul Boyko, and Treasurer Darren Kowal, the Club defeated the German and Spanish Clubs at football during their yearly face-off in the fall. These victories broke a losing streak of who knows how long! With music by the Fenwick Jazz Band, Lee Sobczack's band, John Steinhagen, and others, the play gave the audience great listening pleasure. The audience laughed hysterically throughout the comic skits written mostly by John Chrastka. Senior Robert Spartz brilliantly imitated the fiery Mr. Donald Heldmann. N fr Q:,,e M ,P -45!5'iI'w-A 'i' 'B'.,,f,3 .43 .. 'xi -W 'S The best way to describe this year's hockey season is to say that it was an up and down season. Many of the players would agree that winning the Village Championship over Oak Park-River Forest was the greatest accomplishment of the season. ln that game, Senior Captain Bob Waunn earned the Most Valuable Player award for Fenwick. Although the Friars fought through a somewhat disappointing regular season, other players might say that earning a spot in the Catholic League play-offs Cwhich the Friars have not done for eleven yearsj was the most important accomplishment. Yet, some believe that the State play-offs are just as important. After last year's one goal loss in the quarterfinals of the Class AA State play- offs, the Friars were determined to return this year. Not only did the Friars return, they also received a bye in the first round. With the loss of six seniors at the end of the '86-'87 season, next year's team will rely heavily on quick skating, strong defense, and hard hitting. The Friars are determined to finish in the top half of the Catholic League and go on to the State Play-offs for the third consecutive year. 79 is ix L 0 ff Xxx xx ' 9213 .filet-3 - ,N-him Swimmin 12-1 Catholic League Champions Sectional Champions Fifth In State The 1986-1987 swimming team once again ranked su- preme as the Catholic League champions, sectional champions, and 5th Place State Team. First team all-state members and All-Americans Kris Al- shabkhoun, Chris Brundage, Phil Nauman, and Curt Streder inspired the team to victory. Other outstanding members of this year's varsity team included: Keven Zielinski, Joe Kuliser, Cary Schulz, Walter Kelly, Bob Montalbano, and Jim "Stitch" Wiaduck. Next year will undoubtedly be as dominating as this year's team. Even though the Friars will graduate an unusually strong senior squad, the base of excellence will continually be replenished by the underclassmen. In addition, the team would like to extend its gratitude to first-year Head Coach James Caliendo and veteran Assistant Coach Ralph Duke for their perseverence and dedication. 6 R x :K f H - 4r,f9 A L,-fYd4Aa7v HV, '41 , , v ,,, l Q V li' ',A' .
