Football Fenwick's 1977 football team began the season with the goal of winning the Catholic League champion- ship. They attained this by becoming, along with St. Laurence, co-champions with a 6-1 League record and a 8-2 game record. In Fenwickis two pre-season games against St. Leo and St. Joseph, the Friars had little trouble posting victories, 34-0 and 26-7 respectively, behind superb blocking and tackling, the running of Pete Meade, Dave Gall, and Jim Mota, the passing of Bob Dobry, and the receiving of Joe Rooney. Against St. Laurence, the Friars were edged out in the last minutes of the game. Fenwick scored on a 96-yard kick-off return by Marty Finan and a 20- yard run by Mota. The following week, the 'fJunk Yard Dogs" upset St. Rita, 14-6. Mota scored two touchdowns in the first half, while the linebackers and defensive backfield held the St. Rita passing game in check thus ensur- ing the Friar victory. Marty Finan highlighted the game with three interceptions. Against Mendel, Mota, Gall, Meade, Dobry, and Donnell Lighthall all scored. In addition, John Rooney kicked six extra points as the Friars breezed by the Monarchs 50-16. Gordon Tech was chewed-up and spit-out as the defense, highlighted by a spectacular interception by Gall, shut out the Rams 22-0. f A .nn as 7? Tl Catholic League Co-Champions Linemen Dan Skoglund, Terry Hanley, Dan Shea, Jim Crowder, Ken Koeller, Mike Boyce, Kelly Frank, and Mark Iatarola charged 35-6 over St. Francis de Sales. The Friars next met Loyola with a solid defeat, 21-0, all the touchdowns came in the second half. Clinching Fenwick's first championship since 1962, the "Junk Yard Dogs" mauled Weber 25-O. In the Prep Bowl, the Friars led 12-O, but St. Rita scored two quick touchdowns in the game's final minutes to end the Friar's season. From Fenwick, Jim Brady and Marty Finan were selected for the first team All League. Skoglund ftwicej, Dobry, Hanley, Shea, and Crowder were picked for the second team. Skoglund was named Catholic All-American, and Finan and Dobry were given Honorable Mention. The team is grateful to coaches George Badke, George Gargano, Don Sebestyen, and Jim Delach. The football coaches of the Chicago Catholic League voted Coach Badke the outstanding coach for the 1977 season and awarded him the Anthony R. Lawless Award. With a few breaks, the Friars might have been serious contenders for the Catholic League crown since they were never really crushed by any team. After an early loss to Austin, Fenwick easily won the consolation championship in the St. Patrick's Thanksgiving Tournament. In Lawless Gymnasium the Friars upset highly-touted Westinghouse 84-78. In one of the most memorable games of the season, the Friars nipped the number one seeded team in the tournament, Proviso East, 81-80. Losing 74-59, Fen- wick could not overcome the St. Joseph Chargers. In addition to the team's second place finish, Brian Liston, the tournament's leading scorer, and Joe Bresnahan were named to the all-tournament teams. On January 6, Fenwick faced St. Laurence, one of the top-ranked teams in the state. Although they lost 70-66, the Friars convinced many people that they were one of the best teams in the area. In one of the sweetest victories of the season, Fenwick crushed Oak Park-River Forest 74-54. . I fy A 1 6 x Fierce action under the boards. Regional Champs Although the Friars did have a tough time toward the last half of the season, they hit their peak when the state playoffs began. Fenwick nipped Oak Park 63-61 in the first round of the tournament. By dispos- ing of De LaSalle 71-65, the Friars became Regional Champions. Fenwick then travelled to the Sectional tournament at Hinsdale Central, took on undefeated East Leyden, but lost 68-64 in double overtime. Although the season had some disappointments, the Friars did provide many exciting momentsg upsets over Westinghouse and Proviso East were among the highlights of the year. Perhaps the story of this year's team was Captain Brian "Sonny" Liston. The senior forward was considered one of the best all-around players in the state. At 6'9", Joe Bresnahan showed improvement while dominating the boards with Lis- ton. Six foot junior Jim Trauth was a leading re- bounder for Fenwick as were Pete Stroth and Jim Durkin. Manny Massani, Chris Beeman, Marty Finan and John Rooney shared the load in the back- court for the Friars. A well deserved honor was re- ceived when Coach Ed Galvin was inducted into the Chicago Catholic League Hall of Fame at the end of the season. . An impressive 22-0 season topped with a second consecutive state crown again gives Fenwick the right to claim a heading of "ffl", This year's team excelled as its depth and strength literally drowned all other foes in the state. Crosstown rival Oak Park and some in the Catholic League were the only teams that seemed near the Friars' level of play. But even they were blown out of the water by the Fenwick forces. The team was led by previous all-staters Jonas Zy- mantas and Jim Barron. They were honored again as all-staters this year along with senior Ralph Duke. Zymantas was named state Most Valuable Player while Barron was named team MVP. Coach Hal White was again voted "Coach of the year." Depth in the squad was shown by the performances of returning goalies Terry Burns and Scott Wert. Other outstanding juniors included Mike Krug, Mike Barron, and Robert Ramoska. With such play- ers, next year's team promises to fulfill the expecta- tions of the never ending dynasty of Fenwick domi- nance in the water. With this, they practiced. Catholic League Champs X iii. Swimming Second In State At the close of a long five month season the Fen- wick swimming team found itself in second place in the State of Illinois, first place in the District, and first place in the Catholic League. Against Indiana State Champs, Bishop Noll, the Fighting Friars came out swinging and easily won despite the absence of Jonas Zymantas. The Friars then captured the Rockford Relay and their own Friar Relay title. The next dual meet against St. Viator saw Fenwick emerge victorious as did those against Thornwood, Catholic League opponent Loyola, Marmion, Mt. Carmel, Carl Sandburg, St. Ignatius, St. Laurence, Kankakee Eastride, and Brother Rice. Fenwick's perfect record was scarred only by a disputed two point loss to St. Charles. "fb , 5 Qu The leadership of Friar co-captains Jim Barron and Jonas Zymantas, guided the team to many victories. Catholic League Champions The Friars picked up an easy win in the Catholic League meet and with the excellent job the District team did, Fenwick was on its way. Fenwick placed a strong second behind Hinsdale Central in the State Finals. The members of the Fenwick state team were freshmen Paul Jenkins and Ken Koop, juniors Mike Barron, Jim Farmer, Mark Jenkins, Mike Krug, Dan McCafferty, Robert Ramoska, Tim Watts, and Carl Zillier, seniors Jim Barron, Bill Pezzullo and Jonas Zymantas. Junior Robert RA- moska was Fenwick's sole champion with his win in the 500 Freestyle. He posted a record breaking 4:26 and was ranked first in the nation for that event. Coaches Hal White and Tom Slott are to be com- mended for their excellent job. At Fenwick we know our swim team to be the very best. 1 ,1 M t Q' if 1 J, ABOVE: Freestyling in the lanes. This year's Student Council can take pride in the fact that it achieved both of these goals and more. Over fifty members, under the leadership of President Ed Dillon, worked hard all year to make the various events they organized successful. Senior Class President Bill Hawkins set the pattern for the year by making the Senior Mixer one of the most enjoyable ever. Immediately following this first mixer, the Council tackled Spirit Week and the Homecoming Dance. Seniors Dan Trifone and Mark Mills were largely responsible for the success of these activities. Their idea of a "Silent Squadv -- a roving band of Seniors who kept underclassmen quiet on Silence Day, was a big hit. In addition, Senior Pete Strothls song composed for the football team became one of the schoolls largest sources of spirit. Other activities of the Council included organizing the Junior and Senior Proms, Conference ,78, Open House, gym nights, the Big Brother program for incoming Freshmen, and assisting with the annual school raffle. Due to the leadership demonstrated by the underclassmen, Fenwick can also expect another great year during 1978-79.
