Sanders FOREWORD As you leaf through the pages of the 1963 edition of THE FAYETTEVILLAN, it will prob- ably be to you just another edition, but to those of us who worked on it, it represents a year of hard work, determination, exasperation, and sometimes enjoyment. It all began in September when all of the staff members were willing and eager to work. Carefully they posted schedules of time, date, and place for pictures to be taken. Letters were written requesting needed information. Surely this year the mistakes of past years could be avoided. But somehow, many of the same mistakes were made and a few new ones were added. There was, for instance the matter of those who could not arrange to be at the designated place when time to take pictures. They did not realize that two or three weeks later was too late, and that their picture could not be stuck just " some place in the book. " Write-ups for organizations came so slowly in spite of our deadlines. The yearbook staff members -- they who began work so eagerly -- began to find excuses why they could not attend the meetings. The library, they said, took up too much of their time. The teachers, they said, gave long as- signment. All too often, the Editor-in-Chief and four other members found themselves working alone. Now, we are not complaining, mind you. There were always those students who coop- erated, and there was always our adviser to keep our spirits up when they seemed to be hitting rock bottom. Finally, the book was off to press, but the job was not done. Proofs had to be read and reread, and the book eventually had to be cir- culated. Now that the job is all behind us, we feel sort of proud of the book and we hope you do also. Today it may be just another book, but tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow it will become a treasured possession, for in it you will find a year of your life that can never be recaptured except in your memories. (jur J aren s We, the students of Fayetteville State Teachers College, with love inestimable, humility unexcelled, and gratitude unex- pressable, dedicate this 1963 Fayettevillian to our beloved parents. You have sincerely and devotedly shared our respon- sibilities, aspirations, desires, kept us faithful and dedicated to the cause, listened and understood when no one else could, and made us serene in times of difficulty. Therefore, with appreciation and thankfulness embracing all of our parents, we make this dedication. Our Majestic C. I 1 1 ii ' , UJ -I d a lU Hi ajfe- ' iiiii] ■«nHMKi««r«v c— .. ' ' i i (Jur J resicfeni DR. RUDOLPH JONES B. A., M. A., Ph. D. AN ADMINISTRATIVE PERSPECTIVE The current academic year has been a sig- nificant one. The College enrollment reached a thousand for the first time. Secondary education majors began upper level courses. Advanced study in various disciplines has enhanced the in- tellectual atmosphere on the campus. As I peer into the future, I envision exciting activities and accomplishments for the college. The 1963 General Assembly will be generous in its appropriation for our needs. We will recieve funds for much needed capital improvements and funds to attract other highly qualified faculty members. But physical facilities and a large enrollment will n ot be our really strong points in the future. If Fayetteville State Teachers College is to ful- fill its destiny we must acquire an image of a first rate teacher education institution. Asa college with years of experience in the prepa- ration of teachers, we must continue in this field of concentration. In the future this college will have research projects in all phases of teacher education. We must know and teach and practice the most up-to-date methods, procedures, and activities. Most important of all we must acquire a reputation within and without the State as a College where only first rate teachers are grad- uated. It is to this end that I pledge my best efforts. It is this kind of an image that will make all grad- uates and former students increasingly proud of the institution as the years come and go. Rudolph Jones President IT (Jur Dean CHARLES E. At home a companion, abroad an introduction; in solitude, a solace; and in society, an ornament. Without it, what is man? - a splendid slave, a reasoning savage. -- Varle. It has been one in which the student body has taken an active part in Student Government. It has been one in which the student government has worked efficiently and energetically. It has also been one which has brought about successful operation of the three branches of our government: the judiciary branch, the legislative branch, and the executive branch. In other words, much has been done in realizing the purposes of our organ- ization. With all that has been done, we still leave room for improvement. These improvements are most needed in the areas of student initiative, student participation, and student co-operation and support. These improvements and more are pertinent, if we as an organization are to realize our potential. We, therefore, look forward to con- tinued improvement which will keep our student government marching up the road of success in respect to its purposes and functions. We express our appreciation to the various campus organizations for the parts they have played in making this school year a memorable one. We extend special words of congratulations to the Fayettevillian Staff for their devoted and unrelinquished efforts in the preparation of our annual. Through their efforts we will be able to look back over this school year - as it is recorded here with pleasant thoughts and rewarding mem- ories. May the blessings of God reign over all of you and steer your endeavors in the directions of success. FAYETTEVILLE STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE FAYETTEVILLE. This objective is advanced by weekly meetings that emphasize the theatrical arts. The Drama Guild also s p n s o r s the North Carolina High School Drama Association. A test of our skills learned is the presentation of fall and spring productions. The Drama Guild is a member of the National Association of Dra- matic and Speech Arts. i VOICE STAFF The student publication of Fayetteville State Teachers College is the voice of the students, thus it is named The Voice. Through the powerful echo of THE VOICE the college family is kept aware of the major occur- rences within its own environment as well as the events occurring on many other college campuses. Academics, student organizations, sports, and religious activities are a few of the integral parts that combine to make our environment an ideal collegiate one. It, then, is the duty of THE VOICE to make public the activities of the many different aspects of college life. It is also by way of this college publication that the individual student may express his opinions on subjects that directly or indirectly influence the student body or the entire college family of FSTC. At times the Ad- ministration and faculty also contribute materials that add richly to the knowledge of the student body. 7 VETERANS CLUB FUTURE ALUMNI VARSITY CLUB COLLEGE MARSHALS DAY STUDENT ORGANIZATION DORMITORY ASSOCIATIONS rr- T -iXt W ' 7 . -cy " " - f ' ..■: 1 STUDENT CLUBS WILMINGTON STUDENT CLUB WILSON STUDENT CLUB T r SANFORD STUDENT CLUB ROCKY MOUNT STUDENT CLUB GREEKLAND T)efia yl pha Gnapier Ol CTl p ia DCappa yi pna M.
