,gif .34 Front Row: Phillip Walker, Davis Walker, Guy Clark, Gordon Phillips, Fred Clark. Back Row: Lawrence Burgess, Toddy Radford, Ralph Grafton, Howard Phillips, Elbert Nuchols, Tyler Grose, and Capt. Harvey. In the above picture we have represented the first football team at Fayetteville High School. This was back in l922, just 30 years ago. There were several unique features about this team: QU There were only twelve men on the team--just one substitute. So you can readily see that the men had to be in excellent condition to play a complete game every week. 12, There were three sets of brothers on this team. f3l They played in army pants, not football pants. Q41 They didn't have any helmets. f5l They furnished their own equipment. By comparing football of today here at Fayetteville with what it was 30 years ago, I wonder how many boys would come out for the team. This tearn played Oak Hill, Ansted, Montgomery, Beckley, and Mt. Hope. They also played a town team composed of such stars as H. R. Beckleheimer, our present she riff of Fayette Countyg Frank Love, local attorney and Vice-President of the Fayette County National Bank, and T. A. Myles, local attorney and former mayor of Fayetteville. The team was coached by Captain Jim Harvey, a retired Army Cap- tain. According to Toddy Radford, one of our present bus drivers and a player on the team of 1922, you had to be rough and ready to play under Coach Harvey. Every morning at five o'clock, winter and summer, rain or snow, Toddy Radford would put on a pair of shorts and a pair of shoes and run to Nickleville and back in order to keep himself in condition. Yes, I believe that we can truthfully say that times have changes.
