It is a very active group having started the year off with an assembly to get the student body acquainted with the functions of the student council. They also held the "Miss Pirate" contest which was done by the popular vote of the student body. The idea of the council is to promote better government in the student body. ir' N. Jhjffkfjfif' .:. Hope eleven. The "Little Pirates" came out of a well played ball game on the short end of a 12-0 score. The Beckley "Blue Eaglets" were the next team to invade "Pirate Memorial Field"g although the "Little Pirates" were completely out- manned. They gave the Beckley boys quite a tussel before loosing 12-7. Our "Green and White" clad boys next traveled to Gauley Bridge to take on the "Little Travelers. " The Gauley Bridge team proved too powerful for Coach Bias's squad and trounced them 27-7. Next on the aggenda for Coach Bill Bias's Prosteges were the Oak Hill "Imps. " They also proved too powerful for the "Little Pirates" send- ing them down to their fourth straight defeat 27-6. Trying for revenge the "Little Pirates" took on the "Imps" the fol- lowing week on "Pirate soil." Still the "lmps" had too much "go" for the "Pirate" eleven setting them down 28-0. To end the season our "Little Pirates" traveled to Sophia still in quest for their first victory. Traveling the road back was a glorious one as they had "sought and found." The "Little Pirates" solidly trounced the Sophia team 19-0. Although it was not a too successful season for Coach Bill Bias's "Little Pirates," the main purpose was accomplished. In the above picture we have represented the first football team at Fayetteville High School. This was back in l922, just 30 years ago. There were several unique features about this team: QU There were only twelve men on the team--just one substitute. So you can readily see that the men had to be in excellent condition to play a complete game every week. 12, There were three sets of brothers on this team. f3l They played in army pants, not football pants. Q41 They didn't have any helmets. f5l They furnished their own equipment. By comparing football of today here at Fayetteville with what it was 30 years ago, I wonder how many boys would come out for the team. This tearn played Oak Hill, Ansted, Montgomery, Beckley, and Mt. Hope. They also played a town team composed of such stars as H. R. Beckleheimer, our present she riff of Fayette Countyg Frank Love, local attorney and Vice-President of the Fayette County National Bank, and T. A. Myles, local attorney and former mayor of Fayetteville. The team was coached by Captain Jim Harvey, a retired Army Cap- tain. According to Toddy Radford, one of our present bus drivers and a player on the team of 1922, you had to be rough and ready to play under Coach Harvey. Every morning at five o'clock, winter and summer, rain or snow, Toddy Radford would put on a pair of shorts and a pair of shoes and run to Nickleville and back in order to keep himself in condition. Yes, I believe that we can truthfully say that "times have changes. " ff Cari' A g'7f 'Zi 1 -l If 'il' Ia ln!!
