WE 28 25 31 32 14 34 20 26 19 THEY 0 26 0 7 16 6 7 13 20 '9'5' The 1954 football season was one of change. Clayton Spencer moved up from the Junior High head coach position to line coach of the Bulldogs. New basketball coach Ben- ny Winborn was an assistant football coach. The most important change, made by Head Coach Harry Vandergriff was the installation of the single -wing offense. With three 200 pound linemen, the line was not fast but powerful. The backfield was powerful and speedy. The Bulldogs lost only three games by a total of four points. Fayetteville placed five men on the All-District team, two on the All- State team. Fayetteville started the season with only six lettermen, but many boys gained valuable experience in the first games as substitutions were liberal. It was a nervous group of players that travled to Siloam Springs for the first game of the season. Many boys started the game who had seen very limited action.
