ln keeping with the dedication ot the Kismet ot l947 to our school,
we have taken tor our theme ot this year book the activities
ot the school The Intermediate Department is introduced
as all students are introduced to the school by the opening
tea The Freshmen are shown struggling through that
dreaded and yet very enioyable moment the initia

the lunior section fond memories are brought
to mind by one of the typical moments of the
prom Doubtless the Senior dreaming of
that prized diploma is also thinking of
the happy days she has spent in high
school and of course looking for
ward to college Last of all the Ac

satire in the representation ot
a typical Faulkner game
brings to a conclusion a

HERMAN AND HORACE
A very very very long t1me ago there was
no one on thts earth except two geese Herman
and Horace They had more fun because no
one told them what to do They ate whatever
But today was very rmportant because they
were movrng Now you may thmk that that
would be qulte unnatural for two geese But
they had eaten much of the food around the1r
home and must move on
After eatmg a large breakfast of rce cream
candy bars pres cakes and lollypops they
begar' the day s work They packed thelr few
belongrngs together and started walklng After
walkmg for what seemed llke hours they
stopped by a bubbllng brook of coca cola to
Whrle they were explorrng they found a tree
so large that nelther Herman nor Horace could
see the top of 1t But hang1ng on every branch
were all sorts of wonderful thrngs to eat
Everythrng IS marvelous sard Herman
Let s stay here We can bu1ld a httle cottage
rrght over there po1nt1ng to a small h1ll
All rrght theres such scrurnptrous food
here repl1ed Horace
They began to make themselves r1ght at home
by gomg over to the tree and eatrng almost
everythrng that came rn therr srght
Now thrs went on for many years untrl all
the food was eaten and the geese were so fat
they had to waddle where they went
They had many movlng days through the
years untrl frnolly they were so trred that a
god reached down from heaven and prcked
up the two geese and because geese are so
whrte and fluffy he made them tnto clouds
So now when you see clouds you ll know that
they re Just Herman and Horace restmg after
then many movrng days

The br1ght mormng sun moved thoughtlessly across my eyes as wtth a
qulclc Jerlcmg movement Sara 1 snapped up the shade endlng all thoughts of
what the day rntght haxe been ad not l7a s mother mststed that I spend the
afternoon talang care of her dau Iht r 1vh1lo she went to a Polo game
I turned over tn my comfortable butlt for two b d and trted to thtnk of a
possrble stckness that could prevent my afternoon w1th Iza
Sarah s starchy apron lc t mterrupttng my thoughts a she ran about the
room ltke a cluclcen Wll 1out a he ld for 1t seemed to me she was hardly alrve
Her SIIII Dutch Doll face never changed from year to year of that I am sure
Her ltps and eye brows were as stra1ght as ruled l1nes drawn across her face
and well anyone could see her black ha1r and eyes drd nothrng for her
appearance Sarah had one th1ng however to her credtt and that was the
way she could lceep and never tell a secret I guess that s because she never
spoke to anyone anyway
Thmlcrng about Sarah 1snt gettmg me to Izas tl had f1nally dec1ded to gol
So I pulled myself out of bed or rather Sarah pulled me out of bed and a
ltttle tmpattently too Impatrence IS Sarah s only emotton
When I f1nally reached Izas I watted for what seemed hours before she
came home wtth her brother Her green eyes shone as she pushed her red
shmrng ha1r from her face
How pretty she IS I thought
Iza walked toward me and 1n a qu1ck rush of words told me that they had
dec1ded to go thts afternoon to the oool and asked 1f I wouldnt please come
too I-Ier brother stood hy sayrng not or word Even though Iza was only ten
and her brother frfteen rt was easy to ee that she was the more VIVGCIOUS of
the two Her brother at tlmes appeared even stuffy
When we reached the oool as Iza called rt 1t seemed that she had mtsused
the word for the pool was IH real1ty a plac1d green pond very large and cer
tatnly beaut1ful rn rts woodsy background
I guess maybe Ill 1ust watch you swtrn I forgot I cant get my hatr wet
Iza replted much to the surprrse of her brother and me Knowtng her vamty
however I stopped myself from telltng her to forget her ha1r
As I pulled off my shoes her brother began to wh1sper tn my ear
Why dont we Just push her 1n harr clothes and all? Wtth what she
d1d to me thrs afternoon shed never tell on us because shed be afratd Id
tell on her
Well 1f you want to get even so bad why dont you push her 1n your
self? was my reply even thougrt Id g1ve anythmg to take the curl out of her
I dare youl
Thts was all I needed In two flashes Izas screams reached our ears as
her red head rose to the surface of the pond breakrng the glass l1ke water tnto
a hundred npples
We however were not the only ones who heard Iza for as I looked up
there stood Sarah Now the e 1sode 1 enttrely forgotten because as I satd
before Sarah YIGVQT tells anycne C1I'lYIl'11IIq

THE MAGIC CARPET
As the door closed behrnd my mother her words echoed IH my mtnd Now
dont waste any trrre Get your Englrsh theme done But I had no rdea for
an Englrsh theme
I was srttmg rn the btg charr near the frreplac watchrng the red flames
leaprng up and I was so comfortable that I closed my eyes All of a sudden
I heard a volce say Sondra wake up' Much to my surpnse a lrttle flame
from the f1re had perched hrmself on the arm of my charr I suppose you
wonder what Im dorng here he satd I saw that you couldnt thrnk of any
thrng to wnte for a theme so I sald to myself Ill trv to glve her an rdea
What on earth are you talkmg about? I lflillllfgd eagerly
Dont be tmpatlent he sold takmg a few coal crnders from the frreplace
FITSI of all hold these up to your nose for f1ve mlnutes And belleve lt or not
I shrank to two rnches All rrght now follow me Sayrng thrs he took my
hand led me under the flames rnto a dark passage, stopped to prck up a carpet
and before I knew what was happemng I sard
Why we re rrght outsrde my house now' I-Ie lard clown the carpet and
I sard Dont people stare at you when you re on the carpet?
Oh no' he sald When you re on the carpet you re rnvrsrble Get on
Where are you takrng me? I rnqurred
Youll see was hrs reply
In the dxstance I saw a body of water What s that? I asked
Why the Atlantrc Ocean of course' he reolted mdtgnantly
Immedlately I answered Durlng the war an Engllsh g1rl came over and
llved wlth us I would ltke to see her very much
What does she look l1ke7 questroned the flame
Well I rephed She and I look very much alrke We re the same age
and her name rs Irene Meyers
In a few mrnutes I was rn Irene s yard Irene' Irene' I called It seemed
ages before she came to the door
When she saw me she was flabloergasted How where when
what 'P she began
Here hold these coals up to your nose for frve rnrnutes and youll be as
small as I am lvfy frlend thrs flame wrll tell you our story
As he was tellmg the story we were flymg over the Engltsh country srde
After she had heard the story she was extremely lmpressed but she and I
had so much to tell each other and so very lrttle tlme tn whrch to talk that we
Our tnp was over all too soon I bade Irene gooaby and we promrsed to wrrte
each other She waved to us unttl we were completely out of stght
I left England wrth a heavler heart than I had when I came but those few
hours wrth Irene were wonderful
As all good thrnas must come to an end so must rtdes on rnagrc carpets We
returned honee all too soon
As we landed the flame sard to rne Sneez three trmes and as I drd so
I grew to my normal srze I-Ie sard Now do you have enough materral for
an Englrsh theme?
Oh yes I replred If you hadnt put me on the carpet my teacher would
As the flame fllck red gently towards the hearth I awoke to hear my mother
saymg Sondra l or you wrtttnn your hen e yet?

Une rncldent was never erased trorn my mtnd
It was my trrst day of school and I had been rn Chrcago exactly three days

A MODERN ATLAS
Heanng the word strength always brrngs to my mrnd a mental rmage of
the Greek god Atlas so powerful that he rs holdtng the heavens upon hrs
shoulder The symbol of power and strength cannot be dented when we gaze
at thrs ftgure Then gorng from the subhme to the rrdtculous another current
rmage comes to rne that of foe Lours the prrzefrghter whose phystcal prowess
seems to defy any human berng who comes rn contact wrth hrrn
T e above examples are prctures of phystcal strength whrch l do not deny
rs a trart much to be desrred Usually strength rs rndtcatrve of physrcal well
berng and to rarse strong and heal hy crtrzens rs of prrmary rmportance rn the
development of our young generatron
Howeve l thrnk that there are two rnteroretatrons of strength whrch are
defrnrtely maror rn a well round d boy or grrl Frrst I should say that the
development of strength of character rs automatrcally followed by strength of
mmd The golden ule whrch ha been a glow ng standard through the years
ncrrcles a worla of rdeas The abrlrty to hve and get along wrth people through
the use of thrs medrum burlds the land of character whrch to me IS to be Cher
tshed 11 cultrvatrng frrenas
Real frrendshrp IS valuable and l should say more rare than common
ln our eagerness to garn our ends tt rs very easy to sacrrfrce 1deals and thus
lose frrendshrp lt rs also drftrcult to face dlsapporntments
What could all thrs mean except the realrzatron that strength of mrnd and
character coupled wrth a good prysrcal bemg enables us to be good Amen
can sports The past war has shown us how necessary rt was for our boys
to have strength of mtnd and body and they certarnly came through Wrth
l am sure that rn our endeavor to draw the utmost from our school expert
ences the al' ove 1 cnttoned has ocer our atnr Perhaps we haxe not all been
able to excel 1n e ery sport but we have learned to share our sporls and to
hand the laurels where they are due We have been taught the golden rule
and rn tryrng to adhere t rt we raxe r fade ar attempt at developtng rn our
selves strength of botr taracter ana rnrnd no forgrettrng the fact that our well
planned healthy school routrne has burlt for us the land of bodles that malce
for a healthy happy future To cur parents drrectors s h ol teachers and
fellow class mates we owe a debt f gratrtude for thts ooportunrty and won
derful rnemorres wrll stay wrth us far far rnto the years

SUMMER S NIGHT
Summer brings to my minds eye certain colors which are peculiar to
Northern Michigan. They are predominately cool colors green blue and
white with a touch of gold.
The deep blue of the water studded with prancing white-caps and pure white
billowy sails is bound with a soft gold border of sand. A powder blue canopy
overhead is flecked with puffy cotton-candy clouds which float aimlessly about.
Their reflections give the lake an ever-changing aspect. Une can scarcely
imagine the variations of green ranging from appleegreen to an almost black
green in the pines hemloclcs and cedars for which this country side is justly
famous. lnterspersed with the evergreens are the slender silver birches glist-
ening in the sun. Atop the highest hill stands a regiment of poplars guarding
the cherry orchards below. The little cherry trees so meticulously placed form
a geometric pattern and remind one of the motif in Grant Wood's "Parson

THE FACE AT THE WINDOW
Ten thirty Bullo a watch ime and station WI-IY brings you Tommy Turnlp
and his daily summary of the news
Good evening neighbors This is Tommy Turnip Dont want to alarm
you ladies but the whole community is in a turmoil over the ever increasing
wave of peeping Toms and petty burglars which seems to be rnundatrng our
fair city The Mayor and Chief of Police met in an emergency session tonight
and from all sides of the city came the rumblings of irate citizens Be sure
to keep those windows locked and double check those doors tonight or
Mom could stand it no longer She crossed the room wearily and shut off
the radio with a determined click If only Willie were here Id feel so much
better she said more to herself than to me But goodness knows when he ll
get back from that awful Mediterranean Bee Bee look at every window and
be sure the locks are on and then let s go to bed
I had Just fallen into a troubled sleep after musing over the latest news of
Tommy Turnip when I heard Mom calling in a frightened vorce Bee Bee
Bee Bee someone is scraping at the window'
sdoner had I reached the window than I heard footsteps hurrying around the
corner of the house Then all was quiet
For several minutes Mom and I stood frozen to the spot on which we were
standing Then we decided we were lett1ng our imaginations get the better
of us and that we should go back into bed
As we lay there thinking of the scraping we heard another strange noise
which sounded as though someone was throwing pebbles against the Window
We pulled together the last remnants of our courage tiptoed to the windows
and gingerly pulled aside the curtain Horrors' There before us nose pressed
to the window was the ghostly outline of a man s face In a frenzy of fright
we spun about and dashed toward the telephone As we were half way down
the hall we heard a voice in a vaguely familiar tone calling Mom Mom
it s Willie'
Never did a peeping Tom have such a welcome reception'
LIFE AND DEATH
ie is a queer thing
ie is a beautiful thing
re is an ugly thing
It is like a play
Each person goes forth with his act
And then in time he passes away
Death IS the end of lrfe
And the beginning of all time
It is so pea eful to die
To be an angel in the ski'
But yet Im glad that Im ahve

A PAGEANT OF LIFE
enroy the solrd comfort of beautrful Paradrse Lodge over ookmg prctur
saue Merrrmack Lake a lure to any red blooded frsherman
I smrled sardonrcally and carefully replaced the folder rn my travelrng case
What a lme that place hasl I haven t heard anythrng that good rn a long trme
Look whats talklng about lrnesl Thats a laugh My srster yawned
on her rt looked good brushed a speck off her new gabardrne and looked
around the c owded rallroad statrcn wrth a bored expressron on her lox ely face
I dont suppose you know that I But rt was hopeless She was com
oletely rgnormg me and was langutdly eyerng a gorgeous Marrne lreutenant
If he was any k1nd of man I knew he would come over and ask to help her
wrth her luggage or somethmg men were always that way around my blg
srster Lorelr But the thrng that got me was that she took tt all so for granted
whrle all the eltgrble men crowded around her I wrth all my frfteen years of
chrldhood completely behrnd me was always rgnored perfectly And the
prospect of spendrng another summer rn the solrd comfort of Paradrse Lodge
was a dreary one I couldnt bear the thought of spendrng the endless nrghts
rn co7y get togefhers wtth my lrttle grrl frrends whrle my srster a mere three
years older than I went gallavantrng off every nrght wrth the local Romeos
At that pornt rn my musrngs my Father returned from the ttcket wrndow wrth
a rumor Hercules Apollo or whatever rn two It seems he was the nephew
of one of Dad s busrness partners or somethrng of the sort but rt drdn t matter
I was completely felled I-Ie took one look at Lorelr saw she was occupred
fthe Lreutenant rt turned out had been some sort of manl and turned to me wrth
a grrn on hrs cute lrttle face
All set for a merry flrng I suppose? Hrs vorce was low and soft I wrnced
Well I do manage to have aurte a busy trme of rt up there So many ways
to spend the trme you know He looked mterested
Well suooosmg we get together and you can tell me all about rt Ive never
been up to the place before and to tell you the truth I was expectrng to have
a rather dull trme of rt But uh the looked strarght rnto my eyesl maybe I was
I was rn my glory We bought some magazrnes and candy for the tram
and consultmg Dad he took my trcket and my luggage for me We were gotng
to s1t together probably rn some ntce secluded spot I thought Well we drd
Except for a foursome of old men drscussrng polrtrcs two or three rah rah boys
from a local college some fussy old mards and half a battalron of soldrers
all drunk we were perfectly alone and peaceful Then rt happened In walked
or beautrful blonde whom I recognrzed as berng aurte the rave at Paradrse last
Vear and that s when I should have done somethrng What I dont know but
I should have known from the way that lohnny Cthat was B1g Boys namel
looked at her thrngs were gorng to start happenrng They drd He excused
hrmself walked kack to her seat srdled ID besrde her and grrnned From ear
to ear It looked famrlrar Then rn hrs ntce soft low vorce he sard someth1ng
about tellmg htm all about rt smce he d never been there and more about
havrng expected to be bored That was enough It was all too famrlrar I
gathered up my True Love storxes two beat up lookmg Merry Lrfe candy bars
and started up front to the famrly s seats my eyes already brrmmrng
I stopped to take one last glance at the travel folder for encouragement
As a matte of fact rt really wasnt the best lme Id heard lately
