Department The core curriculum, must not only ielp the student in maturing his social udgments and habits and in under- standing and appreciating his own :ivilization, it must inform him, provide iim with materials and methods of learning. It must give him the opportu- iity not only to improve his social practice and participation, 'but to :ecome increasingly a sound student of society, particularly his own. The course in core studies makes use mf historical development and empha- sizes a broad historical knowledge, but t must be thoroughly modern in its Jreadth of view and its attention to all significant events, personalities, move- nents and ideas which have a share in American life. Core teachers, believe that core studies make possible experience in :itizenship and that students who live lemocratically in school will learn to mderstand the meaning of democracy ind will live democratically in the rommunity. The Core The core department this year has eleven senior teachers, twelve junior teachers and fourteen sophomore teachers. To core teachers, the school is a laboratory for democratic living. They must advocate, sponsor and assist in the administration of those aspects of school life in which democracy is practiced. They must be active supporters of all schemes of student participation in school control. The core curriculum consists of those experiences designed to meet those common functional needs and signifi- cant life problems. Core represents the sum total of personal youth problems and the problems of social significance encountered by youth. It exists without relation to subject lines and is organized around problems. It should be such, as to enable the pupil most effectively, to acquire the skills, understanding, f f W' wie w ,krlOWledge, attitudes, appreciations, sigh!
