KING STREET unmnrnrlr xc T HA Lights of the world and stars of the human race. SCHOOL Vol. X 1948 COWPER v 0139113 lks of A sympathetic friend to many races in all wa life was Wallace Rider Farrington. His life was an inspiration for good citizenship and his aim was expression of those high ideals which, through his efforts and contributions, has developed Hawaii into a part of the great American common- wealth. With this thought the leaders of tomorrow sincerely dedicate this 1948 edition of Ke Kiadina to Wallace Rider Farrington, in whose honor Farrington high school is named. We, the youths of today and leaders of tomorrow, have learned to understand, appreciate and value the need of high school education. We realize that this training is made possible by the untiring efforts of our parents. We are deeply grateful to them. Here at Farrington, youths show their willingness to learn and their eagerness to serve by extending their best services to their school in helpful and useful capacities. When commencement approaches, Wallace Rider Farrington high school sends out 800 real Americans of diverse racial ancestry ready to challenge any problem that may arise. To those who would look through this yearbook, it is our hope that we have portrayed, in words and pictures, the roles that students and teachers are playing in the process of educating today's youths as the leaders of tomorrow. 4f7 x., Q Siu Thou marsballkt me the way that I was going. LIFE SHAKESPEARE Princ:ipal's Message Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve has been the motto of Farrington students since the inception of the school. In order to serve most effectively one should have developed leader- ship. Consequently, the activities and organization of the school have been developed so as to provide maximum opportunities for leadership. Our student government with its many commit- tees, boards, and responsibilities is a great contributing factor. Our R.0.T.C. with its great dependence upon student officers and its emphasis upon initia- tive does much to bring out leadership qualities. Our class organization, closely paralleling our student government organization, furnishes additional opportunities for development. Our classroom organization, forums, committees, and discussions, further amplify and aug- ment this emphasis. One individual naturally cannot be a leader in all the many activities at Farrington. He must of necessity be a follower, too. Putting the quotation, He that has learned to obey, will know how to command into non-military terminology, we can say that He who has learned to be a good follower, will know how to be a leader. In all our school work, then, we see opportunities to both lead and follow. The extent to which each individual student in Farrington can develop within himself both leadership and the ability to follow the leadership of others, will determine his value to the community when he leaves his Alma Mater. We, your teachers, are all here to help every student in Farrington to develop the qualities necessary for leadership in our school and in our community. To core teachers, the school is a laboratory for democratic living. They must advocate, sponsor and assist in the administration of those aspects of school life in which democracy is practiced. They must be active supporters of all schemes of student participation in school control. The core curriculum consists of those experiences designed to meet those common functional needs and signifi- cant life problems. Core represents the sum total of personal youth problems and the problems of social significance encountered by youth. It exists without relation to subject lines and is organized around problems. It must give him the opportu- iity not only to improve his social practice and participation, 'but to :ecome increasingly a sound student of society, particularly his own. How well these were applied was amply demonstrated by the commendable showing of the cadet rifle team in inter- scholastic competition. And not to be outdone by the boys, the girls also formed a rifle team. Cadets received instruction in map reading, hygiene and first aid, military organization, infantry tactics, and infantry weapons, customs and courtesies. The climax of the yearly program was the formal Military Ball at Maluhia, Fort De Russey where cadets with their best girls joined in a Grand March and thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere of a military social.
