As they walked through the doors they entered the enchanted land of "Camelot". The first person they met on theirjourney was the hand- some prince. He was taking a bouquet of flowers to the lovely princess who was watching for him from the castle tower. The festive atmosphere was enhanced by the romantic music of Joe Cann and his orchestra. The lovely couples danced until twelve, when they rested long enough to eat a buffet luncheon. Then the atmosphere changed to the fantastic music of "Blue Ash". The couples wanted to dance endlessly. but the evening came to an end all too soon. Then our tired and wearyjuniors and seniors left to put the evening's events in their treasure chest of memories. , Minis? , 'f if Wwgygaff Q 'w'Q aW3'W ff fy ,Quin 70 ' +7 X 52' ,, - 638 0 1 F i i 0 V 'qlib O - O h X O O - riffs X 1 2 We fx K M4 1 ? X it ffl- ., .fag 3 ff Season Resume The Farrell High Riders inaugurated the 1973 football season by welcoming the Aliquippa High Indians. Time was on the hands of the Indians with just seconds to play when Aliquippa scored to put them ahead. The result: A disappointing 14-7 defeat for the Riders. Eager to gain a victory, the Riders traveled to Taggart Stadium to meet the New Castle Hurricanes. Each team had their share of fumbles which was the deciding factor of the game. Farrell lost their 2nd game by a score of 21-12. In a non-league encounter Farrell registered their first win of the season over South Hills Catholic. Touchdowns came about from a 71 yard kickoff return by Billy Sims, a pass interception by Mike Ivanovich and a fumble recovery by Garcia Short. The score: 21-6. Next, the Blue and Gold Night Riders traveled to Hopewell to meet the mighty Vikings. The game was superbly played throughout four periods of a constant drizzle of rain. A very proud score of 20-12 was brought home by our Farrell Riders. In their mid-season game Farrell dropped a heart- breaker to the Butler High Golden Tornadoes with a dis- appointing score of 15-14. Although the Tornadoes led in the offensive department, the remarkable Night Riders defense came through when Riley Smoot recovered a Butler fumble and then three plays later John Hartley hit pay dirt. Midway into the game another fumble was recovered by Farrell and a beautiful pass interception was completed. wk 1 1 il. . Three costly penalties against Farrell aided the Tigers in scoring to defeat Farrell. John Steklachick, who took over the con- trols as Quarterback, completed 4 out of 8 pass attempts. On the road for the last time, the Farrell Night Riders traveled to meet the Ellwood City Wolverines. The Blue and Gold team came out fighting for a victory which they accomplished by winning 27-7. Farrell compiled 443 yards, including 414 yards on the ground, to the loser's total yar- dage of 16 yards. For the next to the last game of the season Farrell was stacked up against the Ambridge High Bridgers. In the se- cond quarter Mike Ivanovich put forth speed and power as he ran 62 yards for a touchdown. Just as the game was nearing its end, Judson Flint received as Ambridge pass and made his way 40 yards into pay dirt. A well earned vic- tory for the Night Riders: 13-6. The Sharon-Farrell game once again climaxed the 1973 football season. A large crowd witnessed a hard fought contest which ended in a 7-all tie. Farrell took the lead in the 3rd quarter when John Hartley burst into the endzone and Jon Manilla booted the placement. However, Sharon scored soon after for a 7-7 stalemate in the season's grid finale. The Farrell Night Riders closed their season with a record of 4-4-1. Following is a summary of this seasonis games. The Farrell High Steelers initiated their 1973-74 basket- ball season with a victory over Nanticoke on their home floor. John Steklachick was high scorer with 14 points followed by Dave Sudzina with 12. The score: 45-41. For the 2nd game of the season Farrell welcomed the Schenley High Spartans. The Spartans had a 4 point lead with 2:26 to play but the team work on the part of the Steelers overpowered the Schenley five and went on to win the game 61-56. On the road for the first tine the McCluskeymen traveled to meet the Johnstown Trojans. The Steelers ran into foul trouble early in the contest and dropped their first game of the season 66-47. Back on their home court, the Blue and Gold team dis- played confidence and sharp shooting which aided them in defeating the Clairton High Bears. Jerome Thomas popped in 17 points towards the 61-48 victory. Once again the contest between the Farrell Steelers and the Boardman Spartans turned out to be a jinx for the Steelers. Judson Flint led the Steeler attack firing in 14 points. The score: 48-45. In a very important game with the Beaver Falls cagers, the Steelers ripped off the Fallsmen 53-42 on the Tigers' court to take over sole possession of the lead in the rugged Section III league. The Steelers ended the first half of Section III play with a gratifying victory over the Sharon High Tigers. The first 3 cantos were nip and tuck but in the final quarter, Farrell ex- ploded and won the game 45-39. The next time out for the Blue and Gold team was a non- league game with the Altoona High Mountain Lions. Jerome Thomas topped off the victory of 51-44 with 14 tallies. Victory 58 came as the Farrell High Cagers rapped the determined Ambridge High Bridgers 45-41 in a low scoring contest to keep the Steelers king of the mountain in league action. The McClusky machine traveled down the victory trail once again as they brought home a sparkling victory of 61-53 over the New Castle cagers. Paul Carly turned in his finest scoring performance of the season drilling in 13 points. The Blue and Gold team moved one step closer to the loop title with a 63-47 victory over the Ellwood City Wolverines. High scorers were Judson Flint and Jerome Thomas with 15 markers each. Hoping to retain their perfect record of 11-0, the Steelers traveled to Butler to meet the tall Butler Tornadoes. The Blue and Gold five played hard, and in a sizzling period of over- time, Farrell slipped past Butler 55-53. In the annual Ralph E. Dresch Memorial Tournament, the Farrell Steelers triumphed over the Ringgold High Rams, 46-42. Dave Sudzina chipped in 16 tallies to lead the Steeler scoring. Farrell copped the tourney title in a fascinating game by demolishing the Midland High Leopards, 53-41. Judson Flint was outstanding as he pitched in with 18 points. The Steelers opened their Section III competition by traveling to meet the Ambridge Bridgers. The talented McCluskeymen dumped the highly touted Ambridge quintet 68-51. Mike Marshall was superb as he drilled home 23 points. In the next game, the Farrell Steelers destroyed the New Castle Hurricanes for their second straight section victory. Eleven men saw duty with 10 figuring in the scoring of 74-44. The Blue and Gold team took its third straight league win as they dumped the Blackhawk High Cougars, a former Class B unit. Farrell led throughout the contest bringing home an impressive 55-31 triumph. The magnificent McCluskeymen walloped Ellwood City 75-42 to put them in a deadlock for the section lead with Beaver Falls. Thomas, Steklachick, Sudzina, Jordan and Car- ly all hit double figures in the victory. Next, the Butler High Tornadoes came to Farrell fired up to win a game but once again the talent and skill of the Steelers came through as they rambled over the Butler five 62- 51. The Steelers won their 15th Section 3-A crown after an arousing 4th quarter rally on the Blue and Gold hardwood. The Farrell quintet stormed back from a seven point deficit to defeat the Beaver Falls Tigers 55-53. Dave Sudzina and Jerome Thomas powered the scoring attack with 21 and 15 points respectively. In the final Section III game of the season the Steelers traveled to Sharon to tangle with the Tigers. The determined Tigers exploded in the second half of the game to inflict the Steelers' first Section III loss by the score of 62-40. The game however, had no effect on the Steelers as they had already clinched the section title in the previous game. The Steelers will carry a 19-3 record in the state playoffs. Due to the early deadline of our book, we are unable to continue coverage of the playoff games. However, we wish the Steelers the best of luck in their quest for the school's 8th PIAA championship, and bid farewell to Paul, Judson, Dan- ny, Mike, John, and Jerome, who have provided us with many hours of exciting basketball action. 87 X John Steklachick V Jerome Thomas Paul Carly .L Danny Jordan 6 Senior Cage Star Mike Marshall Judson Flint ll HE l E vs Z?
