FARRELL HIGH The Farrell High Night Riders under the coaching of Mr. Anthony Paulekas and assistant coaches William Gargano, Steve Karlovich, John Sava, and Russell Phillips, completed the 1964-1965 football season with a record of one tie and nine losses. The Night Riders with a comparatively new and inexperienced young squad, found the going a bit rough. Unfortunately for Farrell, many of our experienced players such as backs Falconi and Cannone suffered injuries and missed a great part of the season. On September 11, Farrell played their initial game of the season tying Campbell Memorial 7-7. This was the Night Rider's best showing of the year. In our first section start, Farrell played even with Alliquippa for the greatest part of the game, but the second half saw Aliquippa win with a score of 16-0. The Night Riders then faced a strong, experienced Butler team, but staged the best scoring effort of the season. Butler jumped off to an early lead and stayed there to make the final score 45-28. Farrell then traveled to Austintown Fitch. Farrell’s failure to capitalize on a few key plays found them again on the short side 14-8. Another game which could have gone either way was with Ellwood City which we lost in the second half of play by the score of 19-7. 66FIRST ROW 1. to r. FOOTBALL SQUAD Farrell then traveled to New Castle where the Red Hurricanes proved too much for the Night Riders; winning by a score of 12-0. This was another instance in which Farrell's failure to capitalize on a few plays caused their defeat. Likewise, in the Beaver Falls game which Farrell lost 21-7, we dominated play for most of the game, but were overcome in the final quarter. The next two games against Niles McKinley and Ambridge both ended in defeat. The Red Dragons of Niles possessing a very fine experienced team were too much for our boys who lost 52-14. Farrell lead Ambridge in the first part of the game 7-0, but were overcome in the second half. The score ended 21-13. The final game of the year saw Farrell against Sharon. This game, as predicted by many, matched two equally powerful teams. The play of the first half was quite equal with each team scoring once. Sharon staged a surprise fourth downplay by scoring a touchdown. This, along with another score in the second half, spelled Farrell's hard fought defeat of 14-6. The following players wore the Blue and Gold for the last time: Damun Gracenin, Richard Cannone, Louis Falconi, Steve Mirizio, Steve Gurrera, John O'Stafy, David Kerr, Michael Stowe, Rocky O'Kin, James Guerino, and David Miller. Congratulations are in order for our team, who although having a tough season, gave it everything they had. We are proud to say they wore the Blue and Gold. No finer sports have worn the Night Rider uniform. 67Mr. Anthony Paulekas Varsity Coach The F.H.S. Coaching Staff Behind the many boys that make up our Night Rider football team are five great coaches. Mr. Anthony Paulekas, ourheadcoach, has the finest record of any coach in our area. Mr. Paulekas, who has served at Farrell for twenty-eight years, has earned the praise of all who have come into contact with him. Mr. Paulekas is a graduate of Washington and Jefferson College and a former guard for the champion Green Bay Packers. His Night Rider squad of 1951 was the only team in the area to win the W.P.I.A. L. championship. Mr. Paulekas, who is retiring this year, will long be remembered at Farrell not only for his brilliant record, but also for his great sportsmanship and enthusiasm. The men left to carry on the job of coaching our football team are Mr. Russell Phillips, Mr. John Sava, Mr. William Gargano, and Mr. Steve Karlovich. All of these men are graduates of Farrell High School and very capable. Good luck to the coaches in their efforts to guide the Night Riders to even greater neights. Mr. Steve Karlovich Mr. John Sava Mr. Russell Phillips Mr. William Gargano Assistant CoachesTRACK COACH: Mr. Russ Phillips, Assistants: Mr. Steve Karlovich and Mr. Dan Zipay. Record The undefeated Farrell High Steelers recently completed the best track and field season in the school's history, finishing with a perfect 9-0, record. Five new all-time school records were set and two tied, while three new stadium marks were set on the Farrell oval. The Steelers hope to field a strong contender next season since most of the squad will return. FRONT ROW L. to R.
