People of Farrell can easily understand this, for it has been under the direction of progressive leaders that Farrell has advanced to a third class city from a straggling cluster of homes and business houses within a period of thirty years. The year of 1932 will be an especially memorable one in the history of Farrell, for it was on January 3, 1932, that the Borough of Farrell ceased to exist and Farrell, the third class city, became a reality. The move, coming as it did during trying economic conditions, was further evidence that the city's leaders were building firmly for the future. It would be unfair to give major credit to any individual or group of in- dividuals for Farrell's rapid advance. The third class city classification has been the dream and goal of Farrell's public officials since the borough was incor- porated. However, it was under the unselfish guidance of a borough administration composed of Clyde Scowden, burgess: Andrew Stefanak, Andrew Wilson, George Davis, John Balach, George Renshaw, Anthony Pintar, Nick Santell, Andrew Bobby and Carl Lubbe, councilmen, and Joseph Cantelupe, treasurer, that the Hnal steps were taken. These men realized that old political lines would be broken down by the provisions of the third class city code, but they gladly took the step in the interest of the community. When the voters went to the polls to name a new administration, Joseph Franek, a resident of the borough for many years and an ardent worker in be- half of the community, was named mayor. Councilmen chosen were all of established repute in some line of endeavor who, time after time, had proved that they had the best interests of the community at heart. They are: Lewis Levine, Michael Nevant, Harry Gerber, and John Krauss. John Kaliney was named city controller. Joseph Cantelupe was returned as city treasurer. Since taking office the new administration has acted with the same wisdom and forethought as their predecessors and the continued progress of Farrell as a third class city is assured. -William J. Thomas page twenty ver -QQ FARRELL SCHOOL g When progressive civic leaders of the Borough of Farrell acted to crystal- lize their plans for making Farrell a third class city with the beginning of the year 1932, the administrative and educational systems were open for inspection. A close inspection of the schools soon revealed that the educational system had kept pace with the borough's industrial and economic development, The firmness of the foundation upon which the school leaders have built gave conlidence to civic leaders that the school system would continue to meet the educational needs of the city's young. The Borough of Farrell had its inception in l9Ol and during that same year two frame school buildings were erected. From that beginning the school system has expanded until it includes four modern grade buildings, a special building for the Seventh grade, and the Junior-Senior High which is "home" for students from the Eighth to the Twelfth grades. Not only does the physical equipment of the school system compare favor- ably with other progressive third class cities, but the system is also modern and up-to-date in its curriculum and methods. All requirements of the state in regards to courses are complied with, while advanced strides have been made in several special iields. I loitered beside the margin of a babbling brook, and there I sat, preoccupied with remi- niscenccs cf my stay at Farrell High School. Somebody once said, "I-Iistory will repeat itself," but I assure you that there is an exception to this rule, for the history of the Class of '32 cannot repeat itself! Its scintillating career cannot be paralleled! Even when we were Freshies, the faculty noticed the outstanding brilliance of the students. Although We were not acquainted with the ordinary curricu- lum, we soon adapted ourselves tcp the circumstances, proving our versatility. When the time for our Junior High Commencement came, the school fairly buzzed with the plans for our program and our elation at the thought of being presented with our well-earned diplomas. Since our activities as Freshmen had not been so numerous, we made up for it in our Sophomore year. We were actively engaged in literary and athletic pursuits: we were prominent socially as well. I need just mention the success of the Senior High Dance at which the "Sophs" were attendants, and you will realize our standing. At the close of this eventful year, we all felt somewhat regretful. However, this does not mean that we were not delighted to become upper classmen - we were. As Juniors, We again proved quite outstanding in liter- ary, athletic, and dramatic talents. We attended the Senior High Dance at which we proved that We could be as sedate as debutantes and just as hectic! I need not enlarge upon the Junior-Senior Banquet, for it was an assured success. In fall of '31 the illustrious, much-sought-after honor of being a Senior was at last realized. Our first social event was a weiner roast at which we all had a gay time. Our Senior play "Adam and Eva" followed. Putting all rail- lery aside, I must here say that much of our Senior year was devoted to hard work which We kept up until the Junior-Senior Prom when we once again appeared from behind our shell of hard work. Sufhce it to say the prom was a success. It was with sincere regret that we left our beloved Alma Mater to venture out into the ruthless world to seek our careers, well prepared by our four-year stay at Farrell High School. -Grace Sarcirzella Class Historian page forty-six 1932 REFLECTOR STAFF EDITORIAL STAFF Photographs Administration Athletics Steve Wasko Mary McCartney Alfred Schlesinger Manager Classes Activities Blair Hursh Hannah Schell Sylvia Horovitz Art Alumni Features William Hlinsky Steve Bauer Eileen Heagney Snapshots Steve Bauer Mary Jane Peat Florence Adler Erma Antal Rebecca Bazilan Anna Bubrik Dorothy Dixon Elizabeth Elberty Minnie Gelfand Cornelia Ghenea Annabel Haney Sue Holmes Florence Adler Steve Bauer Rockie Bianco Clara Fisher Pauline Frankovitch Lillian Garfunkel Marguerite Gatet William Guist Eugene Hamborsky Business Mr. W. This was something which We considered a great achievement. Our boys were greeted by the Sophomores and were given the customary hazing. The year passed rapidly and our class Was graduated from the Junior High School to the Senior High School. After a pleasing vacation, We returned to our studies again, but now we were Sophomores, Who could command some respect from the upper classmen. As Sophomores we engaged in all school activities, hoping to gain laurels for our class and for the school. We held a swimming party which was a success. We have at last won the distinction of being upper classmen. As Juniors, we are now looking forward to that ever important social function, the Prom. Our Junior year will then close and We shall return in the fall as full-fledged Seniors. ' 'v 1 HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1934 We entered the Freshman Class of Farrell High School with a warm re- ception. The boys were especially welcomed by the upper classmen who glee- fully sheared their shining locks. Although the curriculum was new, the ma- jority of us passed and returned the following September as Sophomores. On June 3, 1931, we received our diplomas after a pleasing program in the audi- torium. This made us members of the Senior High School. As Sophomores, the boys avenged their wrongs by gleefully shearing the locks of the new Freshmen. A large number of us took part in athletic and scholastic activities. The first social function that we attended was a Hallowe'en dance sponsored by the Seniors. It was a success and marked our debut into the Senior High School Social World. In November, we sponsored our own social function - the Sophomore Class Party. We are looking forward to next year as one of greater success and higher achievements for the Class of "34". -Minnie Szabo H34-" SECOND SEMESTER HONOR ROLL 1930 - 1931 Emily Ferezon Cornelia Luca William Roth Helen Gaynor Wanna Marciniak Sylvia Russ Margaret Kagarise Catherine Marinovich Mike Sanitate Frances Leyshon Margaret O'Masta Mildred Sciljo Kathryn Skubich Zelma Zukerman FIRST SEMESTER HONOR ROLL 1931 - 1932 John Bayluk Andy Ellis Wanda Marciniak Jessie Carine Joanne Gunther Margaret O'Masta Anna Day Margaret Kagarise Catherine Marinovich Steve Elich Frances Leyshon Martha Palko Anna Scanlon Frank Valetich Honor Roll: A or B Grades. page fifty-six S 11 522 TI-IE CLASS OF 1935 MDW! HISTORY OF TI-IE CLASS OF 1935 At last our dream had become a reality. With our cup of joy brimming over we entered a vast meadow called our Alma Mater. We were planted as little seeds, only to be nurtured under the careful guidance of our gardners, the faculty. Alas! the lirst growth was stripped of its foliage, and the bald-heads of the boys shone in the morning sun, Many of the days were clouded with brain storms. The trees shivered and quivered under its force. Under such conditions the meadow was shrouded in a gloomy and hazy atmosphere. But soon the sun burst forth, the storms were over, and time healed the scars. Under the persistent care of our gardners, we burst forth. some as stalwart oaks and others as little saplings. Next September, with the spirit of progress added to our strength, we hope to achieve more in our next stage of growth, to have the meadow blooming again, and to succeedunder the radiance of the sun. -Eugene Cantelupe "35" - SECOND SEMESTER HONOR ROLL 1930 - 193 l Russell Adler James Bartolon Mary Brown Matthew Bracic Thomas Bianco James Crowder Carl Wachter Russell Adler Matthew Bracic Mary Brown Jennie Dmohoski Mildred Dvoryak Anna Dzurinda page szxty-two Joseph Dankoff Mildred Dvoryak Stella Rajsich Wilda Redfoot John Kluchunka Frances Rosenberg LaVerne Lucas Eleanor McKnight Rose Mlakar FIRST SEMESTER HONOR ROLL l93l - 1932 Anna Egelski LaVerne Lucas Mary Macuski Eleanor McKnight Rose Mlakar Irene Petrick Honor Roll: A or B Grades. In the last ten years the association has tried to inculcate in its members, and through them to others, definite ideals concerning our Alma Mater and her students. As one of the means of carrying this hope into actuality, scholarships have been granted during the past two years. These scholarships will be granted so long as the Association receives the continued support of those members and friends who feel that this is one of the means of building the Alumni Associa- tion far beyond its present limits. With renewed vigor on the part of the older members and with concen- trated efforts on the part of all, it is to be hoped that it will not be apocryphal to expect two or three scholarships to be granted yearly, While laying down a policy of building traditions for the Association and by inspiring increased desires toward scholarships, we are not to overlook the social side of life. Our association, now, has many new and pleasant plans for social activities, and it is hoped that every member will find his way clear to join us in these periodic gatherings. The Alumni Association holds the interest of the "Graduate" with his school, with its past and future, with its ideals and traditions. Let us, there- fore, lend every effort towards making the future something we can look back upon with reasonable pride and with a keen sense of satisfaction for good work well done. The Juniors were waiting at the Methodist Church to welcome the seniors. A delicious dinner was served by the Brennar Class and what a dinner! Chicken, mashed potatoes, and all their trimmings, delicious fruit cocktail and wafers, ice cream and cakel After the banquet and speeches, the happy students thronged to the gym, which was beautifully decorated for the affair. The music for the dancing was eX- quisite but then no wonder with such an orchestra as the "Pennsylvania Nighthawksn with their leader Sam Campagna. Dreamy waltzes, peppy fox-trots, the rustling of silks and satins. dim lights, murmuring whispers from al- luring girls and admiring boys. The Seniors enjoyed themselves immense- ly: dancing to the enchanting strains of the orchestra and rejoicing in memory of their happy school years. JUNIOR-SENIOR 1932 PROM A stir of excitement, rustling gowns, immaculately groomed boys. ejaculations of surprise and joy! What do they all betoken?-the ad- vent of that climax of all our social events-the Junior - Senior Prom. The beautifully decorated gym and enchanting strains of the orchestra transfer one into a realm of dreams- come-true. The exquisite waltzes and tantalizing fox-trots entice even the most reticent to join in the harmon- ious dancing. The multitudinous ar- ray of variously colored decorations creates a friendly warmth which causes teachers and students alike to unite in their enjoyment of the pic- turesque scene. An observant person could have judged by the facial eX- pressions and by the laughter that the Prom was going to be an out- standing success-as it really was! HALLOWE'EN DANCE The Senior Class held a Hallow- e'en Dance, October 16, 1931, at the High School gymnasium. Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors were in- vited. The gymnasium was decorated with colors of black and orange. The beautiful costumes worn by the students added to the scenery. There were prizes given for the pret- tiest, funniest, and best costumes. To judge these costumes was one of the hardest tasks of the event, as all of the costumes were fit for a prize. Fin- ally prizes were awarded to Eileen Heagny for the prettiest costume, Alice and Norma Beige for the fun- niest costumes, and Ann Harriet Scowden carried off the third prize. The music was furnished by the Harmony Seven Orchestra. SPE-RE-WRI DANCE The Spe-Re-Wri Club of Sharon entertained the Alpha Literary Club of Farrell at a program and dance, Both were enjoyed immensely by the members of the two organiza- tions. Now we are all looking for- ward to the day when the members of the Alpha Literary Society will entertain the Spe-Re-Wri members. , SENIOR WEINER ROAST The first social event of the year was the Senior Weiner Roast held at Buhl Park. The diversions of the evening were the games, program, marshmallow and weiner roasting.
