IN 1 lx dx ..ln. S2 ilk A ' fn' ' 'ax' ur? .42 Sentiments on Leaving Far Rockaway -Morty Janklow Ask any senior what is uppermost in his mind. The answer, without varia- tion, will be Graduation That is a most beautiful and impressive word denoting the completion of a secondary education, caps, gowns, awards, honors, and the strains of Pomp and Circumstancef' Commencement is truly something to look forward to, and then to look back on in retrospect. How many of us realize that at Commencement we are passing one of the early milestones in life? For most of us this is the completion of only the first phase of preparation for happy and useful lives. Even at this stage in our young lives we have the right to reminisce, to look back on what have probably been the most enjoyable and eventful years of our lives, the last four years at Far Rockaway. Remember the Freshman Assembly, at which we sat stricken with awe as we listened to Miss Ryan at the microphone and to Mr. Starke at the organ? We were thrilled, impressed with our own importance. This assembly was the beginning of a long chain of events, the final link of which we are now approach- ing. Slowly but surely the terms slid by, each one characterized by a particular event which makes it stand out in our memories. No, these years won't soon be forgotten. The student desire that Far Rockaway be represented in every field of sport led to action by the House of Representatives, and the subsequent return of football and baseball to the athletic agenda. This was accomplished largely through our own efforts. How we cheered! The teams of the Red and Blue needed our support, and we saw to it that they received it. We never could explain the feeling of pride we experienced when the Rifle Team downed foe after foe, set record after record. We almost burst with pride when we heard that they had been recognized as the National Champions. The reason was that those boys weren't just students at Far Rockg they were OUR friends and OUR team, and every victory they scored was OUR victory. This friendship was typical of the many we made at Far Rockaway, not merely casual friendships, but strong and lasting ones that we probably would never have otherwise made. Yes, there were very few people we didn't know and didn't like at Far Rockaway, and very few people who didn't know and like us. There were dates and dances and games to go to, and invariably we enjoyed ourselves. In school, an understanding faculty spent time and energy planning additional activities for us, and these took care of any spare time we had. After what seemed an interminable time, our report cards told us that we were in eighth term sections. Seniors at last! We rolled the word on our tongues and thought about it. How wonderful it sounded! We just couldn't wait to get out. Thus commenced the most exciting term of them all. How we high- hatted those poor lower termers with our senior hats and our clothes bedecked with pins and buttons proclaiming us seniors. There were senior dues, senior meetings, and senior pictures. College applications were followed by weeks of anxiety. There were the senior boat ride, the senior picnic, the senior play meetings, and finest of all, the Senior Prom. It was at this point that we suddenly began to realize that soon this would all be a memory. In a few short weeks we would be leaving it forever. We discovered that we weren't so anxious to get out, after all. It wouldn't be easy to leave all this fun, and all our friends. The feelings of a graduating senior can never be adequately put into words, which are a poor medium for expressing such emotion. But anyone who sees a senior in his cap and gown, marching down the aisle to receive his diploma, knows exactly how he feels. Mingled with his feelings of joy and prilie in a job well done, are feelings of sadness, because he knows he is leaving the grandest school, the grandest faculty, and the grandest friends in the world. 1
