Far Rockaway High School Ride Team Undefeated in 1945 The greatest team to represent Far Rockaway High School in forty-five years was the 1945 Ride Team which went undefeated, and completed the year with 33 victories, the winning of six Championships and the breaking or establishing of 25 records, many as a team and some as individuals. Three of these victories the boys will never forget are the two over the West Point Plebes at West Point N. Y. and one over the Christian Brothers Academy, National R. O. T. C Champions of Albany, N. Y. Since November 15, 1945 the team won 55 straight meets and 67 out of their AVY, ng, km Aix-If ,rm es V Ae' n- f X fi , N ','- 7 fir V .ff y Q X Fr ' 1 Q! r of , I ax if M , A ' Z ' K ff ' I N - ,I 5 s .fl I xx 9 last 68 meets, and since January 1, 1941, when Richie Sierer took over the coach- ing of the team for the second time, the team has competed in 119 meets, winning 110 and losing 9. One record that never can be broken, but can be tied, is the one they made against Brooklyn Tech on June 4, 1945. That was for all five men scoring a possible 50x50 from the prone position, for a team total of 250 out of a possible 250 points. This record has very seldom been made by any team in shoulder to shoulder competition either by a Junior or a Senior team. The bright spot of the team is Bob Murphy, who now holds both the two and four positions League, Metropolitan, and National records. Bob's records are as follows: For two positions he has scored a 100x100 prone and a 95xl00 standing for a total of 195x200, and for four positions he has scored a 50x50 prone, 50x50 sitting, 47x50 kneeling and a 48x50 standing for a total of 195x200. Murphy also holds the National Ride Association Distinguished Ridemen's Medal and the U. S. Small Bore Expert Ridemen's Medal. He is the holder of the Connecticut State Individual Championship which he won on March 3, 1946, at New Haven, Conn., when he made a new record for this tournament by scoring 42 consecutive bulls f10'sJ . He still has two years to go at Far Rockaway High School. Other boys of the team who hold the National Ride Association Distinguished Ridemen's Medals are William Kaye, Fred Smith, John Kiefer, Edward Mittle- man, William Curtis, and Alvin Minkod. All these boys also hold the U. S. Army Small Bore Expert Ridemen's Medal. William Kaye and Fred Smith will be greatly missed upon graduation. Both have been rated by many coaches as two of the top high school shooters of the nation. Much credit must go to both for keeping up the fine record of the Far Rockaway High School Ride Team. This is the first time any Far Rockaway High School Ride Team finished the year undefeated. In 1932 the Rockaway Swimming Team went undefeated, winning 29 straight meets. The Swimming Team also went on to win 44 straight meets and in 1932 they defeated the West Point Plebe Swimming Team. So now both of Coach Richie Sierer's teams have had the honor of going through a year undefeated and each time had the West Point Plebes as one of their victims. NA.. QW! 23
