We can make our lives sublime,
And departing, leave behind us
Footprints in the sands of time,"

Robert W. Kochenour, Ed. D,
To the Class of 1961:
There are three observations that come to mind upon consideration of your theme, First, it seems
to me that in choosing " This Is Our Life" you have shown a desirable maturity. A short time ago Clifton
Fadiman, writing in the SATURDAY REVIEW, stated that present-day youth do not know who they are or
where they are going, In taking time from your busy schedule to" take stock" you have indicated that this
is not true of all youth,
Secondly, you seem to realize that "no man is an island" and that cooperative effort is necessary in
modern-day America, This is evidenced by the use of the plural form " our" .
And, thirdly, you demonstrate a determination toDO rather than merely drift, This is quite important,
for as Thomas Jefferson said, "It is the manner and spirit of a people who preserve a republic in vigor."
At present there are in use mass media which tend to produce a certain uniformity of product, This can,
of course, be worthwhile in the dissemination ofa common culture, in the elimination of dialects, and in the
elimination of those differences of dress that once separated people of varying socio-economic back-
grounds, But it behooves us to develop each individual to his fullest, This development must not be limited
to the intellectually elite. lt goes without saying that gifted persons must be developed to their fullest, but
this development must not be at the expense of those of ordinary abilities, Doctor .Tohn H, Fisher, Dean of
Teachers College, Columbia University, has said, it is" the quality of the ordinary citizen which ultimately
determines the courseand destiny of the nation."
You are the first class to have spent all si.x of your secondary years in the present building, It is my
hope that you have profited from your experiences here, that you have learned your lessons well, and that
you will each apply the knowledge and skills you have learned to the betterment of yourselves, your
families, and YOUI' C01'l'11'1'11lHiTY. To do anything less is to betray your school as well as yourselves.
