Charles Condo- mine opened AcT l by revealing his desire To wriTe a book on seances. l-le soon discovered ThaT a cerTain Madame ArcaTi possessed psychic Torces, and in- viTed her and some Triends To a seance. During The seance, Madame ArcaTi produced Charles' TirsT wiTe, Elvira, who had recenTly died oT pneumonia. Mr. Condomine alone visualized Elvira. lm- mediaTely, a conTlicT arose beTween his exisTing wiTe RuTh and Elvira. ln Two desperaTe aTTempTs To murder Charles, Elvira succeeded only in in- juring The maid and in killing RuTh. Hoping To dispose OT Elvira, Mr. Con- domine held a second seance. lnsTead, his dead wiTe RuTh maTerialized. BliThe SpiriT ended wiTh The maid's psychic abiliTies disposing oT The Two ghosTs.
