Social studies bring the past to life and teaches students the function of our government. World History is an all encompassing course covering every phase of manis progress through the ages. American History, offered to juniors, emphasizes the role played by the United States in the inter- dependent world. Civics, a required course for sen- iors, endeavors to give a better understanding of all the facets of government. Sociology or eco- nomics may then be chosen. Sociology gives an introduction to the structure of society and the interdependency of the peoples of the world. In economics, problems of production, distribution of goods, money, and various economic philosophies that govern countries are studied. World Geography analyzes the areas of the world geographically in respect to environment. ILLUSTRATING THE DIFFERENCE between the bourgeoisie and the working class is Bruce Doll in Mr. Couser's sociology class. ocial tudies Promote CURRENT EVENTS are discussed in an informal manner by means of'a panel discussion. Commercial Pupils Seek Place in Business World EASY WAY TO FIND THAT two plus two equals four Miss a comptometer. Office practice course provides opportunities Eleanor Gallagher supervises Judy Schelling as she works with to work with such machines as the dictaphone. The commercial department equips stu- dents to enter the business world immedi- ately after graduation. Courses that can be elected are record keeping, bookkeep- ing, clerical typing, Shorthand I, Short- hand ll, Office Practice, and semester courses in Personal Typing, Business Law, and Business Economics. Record Keeping and Bookkeeping stress the importance of neat and accurate jour- nal entries. The typing courses provide the student with a thorough knowledge of the keyboard and help him to type by touch. Gregg shorthand is taught and the girls become quite proficient in spelling and punctuation. ln business law the laws that affect every day living are studied and the business economics course gives a general knowledge of business and economics problems. HUNT AND PECK are forgotten words for mem- bers of this typing class. Rhythm is the key word for a good typist.

Emphasis on Physical Fitness Increasing ln recent years an increasing emphasis has been placed on physical fitness. Fairmont has kept pace with this public demand by expanding the health and physical education program. In health units such things as self-evaluation, preventing accidents, and first aid are studied. Physical education offers a chance to excel in individual and team sports. Some of the many things offered are baseball, basketball, softball, gymnastics and tumbling, field hockey, table ten- nis, volleyball, and social dancing. Techniques of play, rules, and strategies involved in each activity are taught. OKAY, HOLD IT! Mr. Richard West watches Ben Jones and Eddie Doerr go through their paces on the parallel bars. 'N
