Industrial arts courses at Fairmont help produce future engineers, architects, and mechanics. Courses include mechanical and architectural drawing, woodworking, metal working, graphic arts, and trans- portation. Mechanical drawing teaches the student to read and write the language of indus- try. The Woodworking course teaches skills for the maintenance and operation of Woodworking machinery, especially methods of cabinet making. Metal work- ing involves various laboratory techniques, materials, and processes. ln transporta- tion the working and parts of the internal combustion engine are studied. WHAT MAKES IT TICK? A strong arm and plenty of paper and pencils are necessary to a Fairmont mathematics student. Courses offered are General Mathematics, Al- gebra I, Algebra ll, Plane Geometry, Solid Geom- etry, and Trigonometry. Objectives of these courses are to develop habits and attitudes of careful, accurate, and independent thinking. The slide rule, protractor, and compass are tools for solving technical problems. Mathematics courses are valuable in giving a background for further study of engineering, aviation, surveying, chemistry, and electricity in college. Advanced methods of food preparation and cloth- ing construction, with the completion of a jacket or coat, is offered to all girls. In Home Economics III girls may complete household projects such as drapery making, can- ning, or preserving. Semester courses of child de- velopment and home management and decoration furnish a practical view of managing a home and rearing children. Driver training may be taken for a semester or the entire year. Besides actual practice in driving a car, pupils have a textbook and classroom dis- cussions. Every term a member of the State Patrol department instructs the class in safety precautions by showing films.
