Mr. David Rayburn cautions Boinnie Steffen, students find the study of algae, common pond scum, very Herwig Baumann and Gordon Ankney. These eager biology interesting. The aquarium shows the balance of nature. Science and Mathematics Courses Provide Answer College bound or not, a Fairmont student will find science courses valuable in future plans. The fundamental principles studied in these courses are given broad applications. A continuous science curriculum may be elected for the three years of high school. Two years of science are required and the courses that can be chosen are biology, chemistry, physics, and Science ll. All these courses provide extensive lab work and the students are permitted to expand on their own ideas much of the time. Dissection plays an important part in the hiologisfs life while experi- menting with the elements provides many fascinat- ing hours for the chemist. Force and E : mc2 are familiar words to all Fairmont physics students. WORKING DEMONSTRATIONS are needed in any physical science. Mr. Victor Showalter, aided by Vicki Call, puts this model into action.

Fairmont offers courses in four foreign languages, including t h r e e years of Latin, and two years each of Spanish, French, and German. Russian language is taught on Saturday mornings by Miss Merrilla Davis. Abil- ity to read, write, and speak languages fluently is the main purpose. TOGAS SHOULD BE JUST SO! A strong arm and plenty of paper and pencils are necessary to a Fairmont mathematics student. Courses offered are General Mathematics, Al- gebra I, Algebra ll, Plane Geometry, Solid Geom- etry, and Trigonometry. Objectives of these courses are to develop habits and attitudes of careful, accurate, and independent thinking. The slide rule, protractor, and compass are tools for solving technical problems. Mathematics courses are valuable in giving a background for further study of engineering, aviation, surveying, chemistry, and electricity in college.
