English Gives Fund of Learning and Information English is required all three years at Fairmont. Grammar and composition work and a survey of English and Amer- ican literature are covered during this time. During the senior year, stu- dents are required to write a complete reference theme con- taining footnotes and a bibli- ography. Besides written work, in- cluding spelling and punctua- tion, oral English is empha- sized. Students are encouraged to prepare reports and give them before class, thus in- creasing their speaking ability. REVIEWING THEIR Junior English days with Moby Dick are Becky Barth and Tad Kiefaber. The fine arts curriculum includes in- struction in music, art, and speech. The music department features the orchestra, band, and mixed chorus. All have gained recognition in state-wide music circles. A budding Sarah Bernhardt or Lionel Barrymore receives expert training in the speech program. Courses offered are basic speech, contest speech, dramatics, and debate. Every year the Dayton Philharmonic orchestra auditions area students to per- form at the children's concerts. Fairmont students have consistently Won places with the orchestra and gained recognition for their performance. JUNIOR SOLOISTS with the Dayton Philharmonic orchestra are Roger Sorg, clarinetist, Martha Ed- l wards, violinist, and Cindy Miller, pianist. I7
