Principal and Counselors Richard R. Somers arrived at Fairmont March 4. 1929, as a commercial teacher. Later he became a guidance counselor and in September of 1949 assistant principal. He has been principal at Fair- mont for three years now. During his years at Fairmont. Mr. Somers originated a mimeographed monthly DRAGON, a newspaper in magazine form which was continued over a period of years. Also in the journalistic field he and Miss Hartsock were co-sponsors of the yearbook for several years. Mr. Somers formed the first F. H. S. golf team in 1930. He was advisor of the Photography Club for three years and the Anglers Club for four years. He a ' so was the head of the sophomore class for a number of years. His favorite hobby is photography, but he also enjoys fishing, and many of his summers are spent in Michigan with rod and reel in hand. Mr. Somers is a very familiar figure in and around Fairmont. His affable voice making the morning ' s announcements is one of the many things that Fairmont students will long remember. Mr. Flatter, Kent Dadisman. Howard Flatter is one of the busiest people at Fairmont. He is assistant principal, boys ' counselor and also teaches part of the boys ' personality adjustment classes. While working as assistant principal, he issues boys ' tardy and readmission blanks and takes a personal interest in any- one who becomes seriously ill during the year. As boys ' counselor, he advises the arranging of schedules and helps the seniors, especially, plan for the future. Mr. Flatter is particularly interested in the basic psychology courses given as a part of the personality adjustment classes, but his first love is the chemistry department, which he had to leave two years ago when he took over the duties of assistant principal. He also does a great deal of work for public relations through publi.c speaking in and around Kettering. Phyllis Smart, Mrs. Cithens. Mary Ann Cithens has been a member of the Fairmont faculty only two years, but in that short time she has acquired many duties. She is counselor for the girls and she also teaches a section of the girls ' personality adjust- ment classes. She is the advisor of the Junior Achieve- ment Club which she inaugurated this year, and she took over the sponsorship of the Future Teachers for Miss Warren, who is exchange teaching in France this year. As the girls ' counselor, her office is never empty; there are always tardy blanks to issue, college applications to be filled out, and rdvice being sought by underclassmen. Yet she is never too occupied to beam her familiar smile at anyone entering her door. The Dayton and Xenia Motor Bus Company
