A trail of covert operations has linked U.S. foreign policy to an arms-for-hostage deal with lran. Illegal funds and arms were also being chan- nelled to the Contra rebels in Nicaragua, both directly and via outside Middle Eastern nations. john Poindexter and the National Security Council, White House aide Oliver North, Chief of Staff Donald Regan, C.l.A. director William Casey, Vice-President Bush and President Rea- gan, himself have all been linked to the contro- versy. Crackdown on townhouse parties By Connie McKenna News Editor in a letter from Richard Rossi, Director ofStudent Residences, all townhouse resi- dents were reminded ofthe policies govern- ing townhouse parties. University policy states that townhouse parties must be contained inside the units and on the decks. According to Rossi, a number of parties have resulted in groups of people socializing on the lawns outside the units. "The main problem," said Rossi, "is that the parties are beyond manageabil- ity. Party hosts have to remember that they're responsible for everyone who at- tends their party, whether helshe is invit- ed or not." Excessive noise and drinking in unautho- rized places are two problems hoped to be eliminated by stricter enforcement ofpoli- cies. Rossi added, "underage drinking is a violation of state law, and party hosts are held fcsnnncil-l Rossi warned that violation of Universi- ty and State policies could at any time result in cancellation of the townhouse contract. For the second year in a row. coach Mitch Buonaguro led Fairfield into the NCAA final 64. On March ll, before a Hoosier Dome crowd of 29.6lO, the Stags wound up the '86-'87 campaign. falling to the eventual national champion Indiana Hoosiers 92-58. Despite the first round loss, seniors Jeff Grotnos and A.J. Wynder put in worthy efforts. finishing the game with 2l and I5 points respectively. Ed Golden drew special praise frotn Hoosier coach Bobby Knight and All-American Steve Alford, who compared him to the best he'd ever played against. The game marked the end of the most dramatic season in Fairfield basket- ball history and showed the team to be a national contender for the second year in a row. j1NlilPtl,, viii V Fv I '..-1:53911 -7'f"L 'i - 75 xi, ' , A qx 175 "N d- ' Y li A' tr Q Q ,, 5 M, IZ wr 5 1 .-. I si 'I' as LHAMPIONS 3-ia.. Q-so 3 The volatile and often controversial coach of the indiana Hoosiers, Bobby Knight, gave Fair- field a little too much to handle. Five rounds later and 2 W weeks down the road, Knight had another national championship. The rafters of Alumni Hall were beginning to feel the weight of a long and disappointing I2-I5 season. as the '86-'87 Stags entered the post-season MAAC tourney as the seventh seed. Compared to the success of the previous year's campaign, spir- its were down going into the final regular-season game against Holy Cross. A last second shot by Jeff Gromos gave the Stags their twelfth win of the season and seemingly foreshadowed that the year wasn't over yet. Brilliant upsets of LaSalle and Army in the first 2 rounds of the tournament put Fairfield into the finals against rival Iona. 30 As a heavy underdog to Iona. the Stags dug a hole early and trailed most of the game. With l2:l5 to go. lrairfteld trailed by I7. A dramatic rally followed. and with 24 seconds to go. Troy Bradford buried a 3-pointer to tie the game at 63. lona answered with 2 of their own. and Fairfield stood 4 seconds from elimination. Following a titne-out. Tim O'Toole fired a mid-court pass to A.J. Wynder, who drove and sank a 2-point shot that will never be forgotten. The overtime period insured Fairfield an automatic bid into the NCAA's by downing Iona 73-70. 5,7Ol left Brendan Byrne Arena in disbelief, as Buonaguro and his team held the MAAC crown aloft once again. L 131 0 0 ,J -1-n The emotion and discipline of Fairfield coach Mitch Buonaguro has played a major part of the Fairfield success story over the past 2 seasons. Since coming over from Villanova, where he assisted Rollie Massimino in the Wildcats' i985 National Cham- pionship. Buonaguro has captained the Stags toward unprec- edented success. Two consecutive trips to the NCAA tourna- ment and a record of 39-23 over the past 2 seasons has given the team and his coaching ability national recognition. Despite rumors he was heading elsewhere. Buonaguro stood behind his team and thanked Stagmania and the fans of Alumni Hall for a great season. The season also took on another special turn for coach Buonaguro. when his wife Diane gave birth to a son Micheal Anthony on March I4 - congratulations on a great year.
