It would be easy to trace how each of you has come to this day, each of you has a story, unique, special, blessed. We can affirm that nothing has been lost, everything has in some way brought you here. This is your day, your graduation! .. . ' " ' ' '."f2-If Lf" ' " 'ka The Fairfield baseball team picked up right where the basketball team finished, as C. Donald Cook's diamond- men posted the finest record in spring sports that this school has ever seen. Besides posting 19 wins against seven losses, the Stags earned themselves a spot in the ECAC tournament in Worcester. After avenging a regular season loss to the host club, Holy Cross in the first round, the Stags dropped both ends of a doublehea- der to UMass and Holy Cross, to bow out of the tourney. Despite the loss in the playoffs, Fairfield's second straight year of participation in that tourney, the Stags had much to boast of. No hit pitching of Keefe Cato against Maine, a mid-season 12 game win streak, the hitting and base stealing of Billy Barnes will all serve as fine memories of this club. The loss of captain Bill Wilson along with Gene and Paul DeVito will hurt next year, as will the speed of Tom Neville be missed, but the whole pitching staff returns, in addition to some of the Stags outstanding hitters of this past year, which makes the future of Fairfield baseball look all the brighter. After opening to varsity squad Iona College and losing 65-0, the gridiron team went on to beat Maritime 6-0 in a comeback from the previous game. From that point, the Stags lost their next six games, and the season ended with a whimper after an optimistic beginning. There were some highlights to the season though. Dennis Murphy, a two-year captain got second team All-American honors for the third year, as well as the coaches award. F lanker jim Anderson joined Murphy on that All-American team. Murphy, a linebacker, was the offensive MVP for the club, while Ander- son won the same honor on the offensive side. Next year promises better things for the football club under co-captains Tommy Rice and Vinny O'Brien, while Sherwin Collins takes over as the club's president. Also leaving in the class of '78 are Murphy, Mark Farrell, Al Franzi, Steve Skronski, Mark Hudak, Jim Pandise, Harry Carrubba and Bryan Murphy. 230 A rr., 'N lt proved to he quite an np and down season for the woinen'x field hockey team. hut nonetheless a xneeessful one.
