'X' Slight Return Return to the innocent days as a freshman. You were a strange bunch that bubbled and seethed with frenzied spirit. lt overran the edges of your mouth with as much gusto as foam on warm beer. You marched as one, easily iden,tit7ed by crispy high water levis and T-shirts, sparkling new dresses accompanied by innocent stares, and an empty look waiting to be Hlled by the new atmosphere thrust upon you. Ahhhh! To be a freshman again. Some would forget, but you cannot. Always remember! A slight return .... You awoke to find the day Hnally here, when you, as a full fledged freshman would attend your first day of high school. You donned your spanking new school clothes and left home prepared with new notebook and unsharpened No. 2's to meet all possible emergencies of your first day of high school. Your legions grew as you passed friends' houses and they came rushing out to join you in fear of being isolated upon the campus, without support. As you moved to the quaaj the bustle of students looked like a picture postcard of army ants of Tananika. Finally, you assumed a spot upon the freshman bench and a man in a red coat uttered the words that would seal you to the next four years, Welcome to Fairfield- High School. A slight return . . . . Return to the first high school classes you had. When you first received your schedule, in frenzied excitement. You contact, perhaps by chance, someone you knew who was at that very time attending high school in order to obtain counsel about' the teacher you would have. ln those shocking moments you were told that so and so was a real bummer, but so and so was really boss. WOW! How groovy that would be. So with your fears and joys of obtaining those teachers, you plunged in, for-warned, to find your fears false . . . or worse, to find your fears true! You can 't win them all. A slight return .... Remember spirit as in the olden days of FHS. Some could not perceive, but we seniors know. How in the year of 7969- 7970 it rushed upon many with such great force as to stymie, all previous ideas of it. Few withstood its appeal and more joined its legions with uncontrolled cheering. Long ago people found rallies something to savoun They were mandatory and everyone attended If you can perceive the idea of not just good rallies but great rallies, then you were a freshman in 7969-7970. Remember? Wind up balsa wood airplanes mastered the atmosphere of the gym- nasium. Three point landings occured in the middle of cheers, skits, and drill team numbers. Many spanned the length of the gym to reach hangers composed of fingers that refueled the rubber bands. Again they were off The faculty threw a rally that had everyone enthralled in laughter. Those times are gone, but not forever. A slight return .... Dances go like Napoleon on the battle Held, covering the flank with battalions of people on the floor, heel deep in sawdust. The bands lie in the front wing, much as drummer boys and bagpipers precede the army of a thousand. Tac squads of boys stand precariously in small demo teams awaiting the explosion when the band starts to rock out. The girls line the benches in solemn formation as if they listened to the attack plans of the Held generals. They carefully stand in the security of numbered groups scattered about the floor like bits of shrapnel. Scouts drifttabout in the woods of people spotting a possible route to attack. Eyes roll about in prowling observation. The war begins, the band strikes up a

A Slight Return Words for Visions number only to be shunned by the armies who stand in disorder and shock. They break free of the trance, prance about a bit, and take to regrouping of twos to which the dance proceeds. As the band recedes into the end, the army disbands, and a new war starts new formations. But dances 'were swell and dances are swell. A slight return .... And the forces of repentence will rain down upon you. Perhaps this was your first thought as you proceeded through the step-by-step plan that would set you free from the walls' that bound you. Those first few cuts were a bizarre affair with small amounts of paranoia that trickled to the surface of your conscience. Should you escape from the frightening day dreams of capture, rubber hose, elephant chains and the old bamboo shoots under the finger nails. You pursued the wise old veterans in hopes to procure one of their antiquated sure-fire methods. In time you came to be one of the veteran clan, or worse, you failed the first attempt then forever lost from possible escape. A slight return .... And other music was pervading in this time capsule we call 7977- 7972. One played in the lunchroom. Others still played those well liked dance numbers in the other game dances and concerts, Down Home, Raving Beauty, Cherokee Children and others, just to mention a few. And who could forget Dust? A slight return .... Ever so slightly look back to days hard to forget. Dresses were what girls wore and not just on Sunday or when it was one of those days of being spiffy. Levi Straus was a poor man then, and his chief income was from the trusty farmer, school boy of 7 7 0, and the all American hard hat. How things have! Legs were part of a girl, utilities that enhanced the lawns, sparkled in many an eye, and gave bespeckled gents a chance to destroy the crutch of poor eyesight by the continuous eye exercise. The world has lost that beauty, the lawns that caress of nylons, and bespeckled boys that strengthening eye exercise. Alas, Eden is lost. And Levi Straus lives on. A slight return .... ln the beginning there was the Zombie. And many deemed it good. Those days of the edible hardtack buns were days when the competition could not ascend to the heights of the four inch long Zombie. lt was master of the mouth, a blimp of bread stuffed with a hidden Cracker jack-like prize of cheese. One bite and homeward bound went the emissary of hunger. A very mellow experience. The Zombie sank in the oceans of time. A slight return .... And backstep to the old at Fairheld High. Remember those horrendous lunch tables? How many brown bag revolu- tions plundered to subside on those tables? To some they may bring back memories of olden days where you met people never known to you. And when the rains came, small Lake Superiors ran the lengths of them. How many spilled milk shakes, derelect lunch trays and boxes grew to caress the surfaces? lt was wonderful at times, but, now, they no longer reside there, in front of the gym. A slight return .... ' Remember those hot lunches of yesterdays? Welf there are still. the same hot lunches of today. Hot lunches never change. A simple statement .... . A week happened to pass by that left its mark upon the halls, lawn, rooms, and walkways of FHS. ln those pre-
