Thompson: coach Although the Falcons failed to win a Delta League championship for the first time in four years the Fairfield Falcons had a very exciting and successful 7977-7972 basketball season. The Falcons finished a very close second place to the champion Vacaville Bulldogs. .Many of the games throughout the season were exceptionally close and during the middle of the league season the hustling Falcons won three straight games by one point. ln the greatest comeback in the short history of the school, the Falcons ralliea' from a seven point deficit with 75 seconds to go, to defeat Woodland 77- 70 in overtime. The Falcons went to two tournaments during the season, winning the Consolation trophy at the Healdsburg Christimas Tourney and finishing in third place at the Yreka Tourney. Probably their biggest win of the year was a 77-67 upset over the excellent Napa indians ana' their 7ft. center Stu Walkinhorst. A gain this season the Falcons were primarily a Senior dominated team. 6 '6 senior, jon Dahl anchored a fine front line, scoring 297 points and earning All Delta League honors. 5 '9 , Sophomore guard Kevin Conyers led the Falcons in scoring with 320 points, played an excellent floor game and earned All Tournament honors at Yreka. Senior guard Steve Pearson was the season captain and third leading scorer with 278 points. 6 '3 forward Gary Mills led in rebounding and had a 535 shooting percentage from the floor. Mark Kreutz, a great all-around athlete, rounded out the starting lineup and contributed a great deal of hustle and defense throughout the season. Senior, Ron Crawford, the very valuable sixth man and several times during the season came off the bench to make major contributions to Falcon wins. Other seniors closing out excellent basketball careers at Fairfield High were Robbie Walegir, Larry Williams, john N ygard and Calvin Fullwood. Returning next season will be juniors Deen Lewis, Matt Shortencarrier, Pat Pearson, David Gibson and Rick K onieczko. 138
