Arizona for parade Last June, the band represented the State of Alabama in the National Jaycee Convention's Parade for the second consecutive year. While traveling to Phoenix, Arizona, for the parade, the group toured Vicksburg National Military Cemetery, Carlsbad Caverns and the Grand Can- yon. In August they performed at the N. Y. Jets- Atlanta Falcon Exhibition game. In the fall, this outstanding organization participated in the Mid-South Marching Festival in Gadsden. There the band received a Superior rating for its performance, and Drum Major Bill Friel, also received a Superior rating for his field di- rection. This year the band took on a new look with the addition of a separate drum corps and guidons. The playing members sported new hats and the small units wore new uniforms. Under the direction of Sid Garwood the band acquired a look and sound of its own. Campbell, Presidentg Holloway, Secretary-Treasurerg Weems, Vice-Presidentg Friel, Drum Major. A Time of Viciorg Qporis H HAROLD RED LUTZ , As One Dgnasig Ends Anoiher Begins. The year of 1969 saw the departure of one of the truly great coaches in Fairfield history, Harold Red Lutz. His move to a larger school was understood by all, though it was truly a loss to our schoolg not only for his con- tribution to athletics, but also for his academic help. This year also brought about the begin- ning of a new dynastyg that of new Head Coach Jim Fuller. His shown leadership will truly lead him to success. Q35 fffp 1 .,.,. x Q COACH HM FU LLER Fairfield Tigers Tradition is defined as a Belief or practice which is inherited from past generations. The Fairfield Tigers of 1968 have established a tradition which was begun in 1967 as the team copped the Jefferson County Indepen- dent Championship. The '68 edition of the Tigers were not satisfied with a mere county championship. They made up their minds in early summer to accomplish something never before reached in the history of Fairfield football - an undefeated season and a berth in the State Playoffs. Through pride, strength, dedication and con- fidence in themselves, they attained both of these seemingly impossible goals. Inspired by a superb coaching staff and an enthusiastic student body, the Tigers crushed all who stood in the way of the goal of their dreams. It was a truly memorable year for all connected with it. FIRST ROW: T. Owen, I. Owen, J. Nipper, B. Parsons, D. White, D. Thrasher, D. Boykin, P. Butler, R. Naull. SECOND ROW: V. Pearson, D. Johnson, S. Stewart, G. Wells, W. Cosby, C. Mason, A. Hubbard, M. Dowling, G. Griffin. THIRD ROW: R. Naull, J. Garrett, J. Edwards, R. Tate, M. Belcher, D. Ellis, R. Brannon, L. Griffin. FOURTH ROW: J. Gandy, I. Thomas, K. Caldwell, T. Gilbert, M. Thrasher, R Thomas, T. Ellison, D. Evans, R Albright, B. McDaniel. I30 Go Unbeaienll The season opener for F, H. S, found the Tigers showing both a powerful offense and an unyielding defense in downing Pell City 47- 14. Fairfield travelled to John Carrol and routed the Cavaliers to the tune of 32-6 for their second victory. Tigers Take Tough Ones. The McAdory Yellow Jackets in- vaded Tiger Territory and were trounced by the Tiger offense and defense to the tune of 39-O. Jones Valley provided the strongest opposi- tion to the Tiger Victory Machine but were beaten 19-14. Down 14- 12 at halftime, the Tigers added another touchdown in the third quarter while holding the Brownies scoreless for the win. James Owens on the Move 'S F.H.9. Takes Homecoming! One of the many highlights of the Fairfield High School year is the activities of Homecoming Week. This is the one week of football season in which the entire student body prepares itself along with the team for the game on Friday night. All the float making, voting for the queen, and bonfire-burning leads up to that climac tic moment when the Tigers take the field to do battle. This year it was a fitting finale to a great week as the undefeated Tigers demolished Hueytown 26-O. The passing combination of Nipper to Stewert or Thrasher combined with the powerful running of Owens and Owen completely baffled the Gopher defenders as the Tigers rolled up another convincing win. Tigers Prepare For the Big Night ,W , l The Captains The long trip to Montgomery was quite worthwhile as the Tiger attack, led by Nipper, Owens, and Company routed a new Jefferson Davis team 41- 12. Tigers Go The Tigers finally got in the winning spirit after two quarters of sluggish play and edg- ed the Bessemer Tigers 20-13. The Defense, led by Caldwell, Garrett and Ellison, sty- mied the Purple Tigers in the second half to nail down the win. I34 Weary Tigers Take A Break. All the Wag! Gallups G allops. After defeating Tarrant and Tuscaloosa thus establishing the first undefeated and untied season in the history of Fairfield High School, the Tigers were ranked third in the State 3A rankings and were chosen to participate in-the State Play-offs. They were paired with Saks I-Iigh in Anniston and met the Wild- cats on their home field. TheTigers met their match and were defeated, 31-O. I I TN!! The New and fhe Old! The 1969 Fairfield High Junior Varsity Team R H Efforis Bring Deserved Awards. C,1.uu0u The 1969 Tiger Football Team had numerous leaders among its eighteen seniors. However, there were six boys who stood out in both leadership and talent. These boys were honored at the annual Football Banquet sponsored by the Fairfield Quarterback Club. The winners were: Most Valuable Player - Jimmy Nipper Most Valuable Lineman - Tom Gilbert Most Valuable Defenseman - John Garrett Most Valuable Receiver - Steve Stewart Most Valuable Back - James Big O Owens Highest Scholastic Average - George Wells Congratulations to a deserving group of men!
