W ood Ward These 4 Years... Your annual this year takes you through four of the most exciting and enjoyable years of your schooling. Through pictures and stories, the most outstanding academic and social events are recorded in your Crucible; the theme of which is the Pageant of High School Life. As you turn through the pages of this book, you will find your activities and your class pictures done up in such a way as to bring out your high school life in four acts. First, the Freshmen—timid, bewildered and hopeful; second, the Sophomores—not quite so timid, bewildered no more, and more hopeful; then the Juniors—adjusted, assuming responsibilities, and looking forward to their senior year; and finally the Seniors—dignified, assured and looking forward to college. DEDICATION . . . Because you have been a great inspiration to us and have guided us when the going got rough; because you always had a smile for everyone; and because you put your whole self into anything you did—we, the Senior Class of 1956, dedicate our annual to Mr. Henderson Walker... m fi The Board of Education MR. C. J. SMITHSON President MR. C. J. DONALD Vice-President MR. E. W. BERRY DR. B. S. CARPENTER Superintendent . . . Though seldom seen by many of the students, this man s untiring endeavors are felt by all. His work with the Board of Education has brought us the competent staff of teachers we have today; but this work has gone far beyond the academic status, it has reached into the welfare and comfort of the students. By his careful planning, we have the advantages of the most modern school equipment. Though his job is a highly respected one and his activities go not only into the community but into the state as well, you'll always find a warm attitude from Mr. Nunn toward you, the individual student. The Principal......... Mr. Walker came to Fairfield High School four years ago, the same year that we came as freshmen. Having started with us, he always referred to us as his class. He is the only principal with whom we have been associated, and we feel that no one else could have taken his place. We have been fortunate to have a principal, who even though he may have had a great many things on his mind, always had a smile and a friendly hello for everyone. His willingness to aid and counsel at all times has been an inspiration to all of us. We think of Mr. Henderson Walker not only as our principal but as a sincere friend whom we may call upon at any time. Faculty Mr John Armstrong Social Studies. Jack Sadler Woodie Adkins Caila Harrell President Vice-President Secretary-Treasurer The Juniors The Junior Class of 1955-56 was an outstanding class. The members of the class achieved many honors in scholastic work and in extra activities. The class boasted of two cheerleaders, four majorettes, and a girl wearing the Miss Homecoming crown. We had a number of boys who were outstanding in all different sports. Most of the juniors participated in many of the activities of the clubs. Thirty members of our class were initiated into the Beta Club and a large number were Thespians. With such an outstanding junior year, we can well look forward to an outstanding senior year. For some this is the end—others just the beginning. We are proud of the fine record we have made in our high school career. Our accomplishments are many. We have excelled in accomplishment in the Beta Club, Thespians, and sports. When we entered high school four years ago, our class was the largest freshman class in the history of the Fairfield School System. As we have gone from class to class, our number has increased rather than decreased. Now that we are seniors ready to graduate, our quest has not ended. Attainment of knowledge is our destination, and success is our goal. The Seniors . . . HUBERT GRANT ALEXANDER. JR. It stands ever ready to help and to guide its smaller brothers and sisters by promoting among the students friendship and a better understanding of and participation in our school's many activities. Every member is elected by the students. These members include the officers, homeroom representatives, and three faculty advisors. The officers consist of a president, a vice-president, and a secretary-treasurer. The Fairfield High Student Council is a member of the Alabama Association of Student Councils, and each year the officers for the next year are sent to the Student Council Convention to learn about their jobs. The Student Council, each year, undertakes the achievement of a major project which concerns and benefits the school. The major project this year was to get new curtains and runners for the auditorium. The basic causes arc carelessness, recklessness, and downright bad manners. There it no magic cure—either engineering, scientific, or medical—for this malady. The only possible remedy must come from those who use the nation's streets and highways. We endeavor to teach good sportsmanship In our Driver Training program. HOME As every football season rolls around a very special and exciting occasion comes along—HOMECOMING. Despite the inclement weather our Homecoming was a big success. Our spirit and enthusiasm was not dampened and the floats were completed and the parade went on as usual. COMING The football game against Minor was very exciting. A steady rain and a muddy field did not stop our boys, and the final score was 21 to 7, in favor of Fairfield. At the half with everyone cheering and yelling, the lovely Homecoming Queen, Carolyn Smith, was crowned. Her attendants were Ruth Woods and Joyce Cates. Awards were given for the best floats in the parade. The Art Club won first place; Delta-Y, second, and the Beta Club, third. l«lf to right, 1st Row Sara Nall Patrick, Dolores Gober. These fortunate six—George Alexander, Johnny Campbell, Allen Carmichael, Mike Laughlin, Jimmy Mitchell, and Jack Sadler—were presented with boutonnieres by Miss Fairfield of 1954, Lougene Camper. The big moment came when the decision of the judges showed that Tommy Grooms and Doug Sager had tied for fourth place,- Bobby Wilson had won third place; and Grant Alexander, second place. The crowning of Gerald Smith, as Mr. Fairfield of 1956, by Miss Ellen Downs, Miss Fairfield of 1955, closed a night of excitement and new experience for fifty-four happy boys. SNAPS 1.
