This muscular man t?1 has been noted for his gridiron work at center for the past three years. He then retires to the ping-pong room where he is one af F. H. S.'s aces. This politician, the world champion coon-hunter, railroaded himself into the presi- Cency of our Junior Class and deserves a great deal of credit for our success that year. A villain by nature, he was a perfect Tinker for The Doctor Is Out. He then reversed character to engineer our most successful Junior- Senior prom. HIGH CLASS PROPHECY SCENE-On board the Bowman Super Rocket Ship Model V 8-8-8-Plus Super 8, fifty miles in the stratosphere. TIME-May 25, 1965, 18 o'clock Eastern Standard Mars Time. PASSENGERS-Larry Bable, Lauren Bowman, Donald Clark, and Ray Taylor. OBJECT OF JOURNEY-To find four new planets for the sake of humanity. After the boys ride for about five minutes they discover four planets: Hubba Hubba Planet by Larry, Ding-Ding by Lauren, Bo-ing by Donald and Erf Planet by Ray. The boys explore the new planets till about supper time and they decide to knock off to eat. Each reaches into his pocket for vitamin pills and calorie hypodermics, and in one minute flat their meal is completed. During their rest after supper they begin to talk about the good old times they had in F. H. S., and to wonder what happened to the class of '46. Well! as the four boys knew, Lauren was a great manufacturer of the Bowman Super Rocket Ships who specialized in V 8-8-8-Plus Super 8 Models. Donald was a traveling salesman who went to Mars, Pluto, Juipter, etc., selling Smiths Hair Tonic and Cough Drops. Ray Taylor decided to be an undertaker, because with all the new jet propelled planes, helicopters and jeepettes there would be quite a few accidents and he would have quite a stiff business. Larry Bable is the National Judge of Beauty Contests, and also a talent scout for Faramount Studios. Some of you may be interested to know that Larry married the beautiful actress, Jean Crain. Donald said, I hear Carol Cullar is Master of Ceremonies on station M-A-R-S. She is leader of the Mars Rhythm Rangers. Say what ever happened to Pro Dailey? Larry continued, Why Pro is now inventor and manufacturer of vitamin pills and hypodermics. It pays to advertise you know and Pro really goes to extremes. The other Sunday at church the congregation was asked to sing page 125, and these are the words that appeared: Hark the Herald angels sing, Pro Dailey's pills are just the thing Peace on earth and Mercy mild Two for men and one for childf, Finally Ray spoke up with, You know, boys, Mildred Doss married I. C. Rumblesnitz and they now have two sets of twins. The girls are named Zada Ruth Rumblesnitz and Dorothy Loretta Rumblesnitz. The boys are named Thomas Virgil Rumblesnitz and Louis Atlee Rumblesnitzf' Yeh! I heard that too, said Lauren, but did you know that Leland Houlette is rival of Senator Claghorn or Martin Chmura, who is President of Mars? Leland owns a great coon farm and also specializes in odorless polecatsf' Say what ever happened to Myrna Cullar and Dorothy Farmer? Don asked. I was just about to tell you, Don, said Larry. Dorothy is a great adventurer in Mars. Her partner is Myrna and theylre the greatest game hunters in the universe. So far they have killed or captured Z0 Oomaloos, 6 Goofers and 8 Ellapants. The other day Myrna shot a wolf. They seem to be having the time of their lives, not a care in the world. Oh! well that's a woman for you. Did you fellows hear Tom Grubbs over the radio the other night? said Ray. He is the greatest funny man of the air-waves, even the greatest swooner. Hubba! Hubba! Page 25 THE CREST OF 1946 You know I heard the funniest joke the other dayf' said Lauren. I heard that Mary Carter is one of Hollywood's most beautiful actresses and singers. With her beautiful slim l?l figure she can make any bathing suit look good, or was it any bathing suit can make Mary look good. I stopped at Warren Bland's the other day, said Don, He invents small gadgets helpful to the housewife. Now in his spare time he is working on a parachute that will go both up and down. What won't he think of next? By the way Warren is not married. Then Ray spoke up, Rosemary Firestone is happily married to Mr. U. R. Crazy. They are the proud parents of a little girl. The other day while driving through town, Rosemary was caught in a traffic jam. A cop said, 'Use your noodle, lady, use your noodlef Then Rosemary replied, 'My goodness, where is it? I've pushed and pulled everything in the car '. I saw Mary Webber at Faddison Square Garden the other day, said Larry. She is one of the greatest figure skaters of all times. She's an expert at the figure 88. I also saw Joan Burt who is now married to Bud Shive, and is turning her attention to carinz for the little Shives. When I saw them the other day it was the oldest daughter's birthday. She said to me, 'Today is my birthday.' And I said, 'And to think in another year, you'll be one year olderf' She replied, 'Never mind about the future! How about the present'?', Elmon Smith, said Ray, is the owner and manufacturer of the 'Smith Brothers, Company specializing in hair tonic and cough drops. Don, here, is one of his traveling salesmen. I Evelyn Miller is now a teacher at Fairneld University. She has a Master's Degree in aeronautics. Some of her pupils are the children of the members of the class of '46. Two of her pupils are the children of Tom Hess. Tom is one of America's leading citizens. Before he was married he was another Dr. Anthony solving love problems. Now since he is married, he has changed his vocation to being water commissioner of Fairfield Township. Ol-i! and last but not least, said Larry, Juanita is now President of Notre Dame, the college for boys. She is very well 'known in society. The other day while launching a ship, she turned to the shipyard manager and said, 'How hard do I have to hit it to knock it into the water? ' Weill said Don, we better be getting back to earthy it's getting dark and we have to tell about our discovery for humanity. Come on. QD FAIRFIELD TWP. Miss Albright gave us confidence and soon our tears vanished. To our young minds the summer passed all too quickly and we again found ourselves enclosed within the walls of Fairfield, most of us as second graders with Miss Richardson as our chauffeur, who drove us on. Here is where we saw our first phases of love, as Miss Richardson became Mrs. John Strausbaugh in the spring. In the fall of 1935, with a grown-up feeling in our hearts, we entered the third grade with Miss Moore supervising. After learning about the habits of an Indian, we were well supplied with knowledge to spend our summer under the starry sky. We were anxious to register under Miss Funk, who taught us long division so well that some of us nearly received our master's degree. In fact we labored so faithfully that she gladly handed us up to Mr. Randalls. In September 1938, we entered Sth grade with a feeling of dignity. This was the year we had to adapt ourselves to the large playground and find interests other than swings and seesaws. After spending much' valuable time and patience in teaching us addition and sub- traction of fractions, Mr. Randalls sent us across the hall to Miss Schwab. Our great and noble achievement in sixth grade was displayed in our beautiful penman- ship. After many trying moments on the patience of Miss Schwab, she allowed us to enter Junior High School. In the year 1940 with heads held high, we strode into Junior High School. We faced much confusion and disorder, but with the aid of Mr. Cole, we became accustomed to the change of classes and made it a habit to get to class on time. Now we were so well equipped with knowledge, and had a well balanced view of high school which enabled us to enter the eighth grade. Mr. Faloon also further increased our view of the world in each history class and we were very much astonished at our ability to grasp these extremely difiicult, but interesting lessons without the bit of difficulty. After so readily showing this much coveted characteristic, we were promoted to become the brightest little Freshmen of F. H. S. . It was in the late spring of 1942, when a scattered bunch of eighth graders, disowned by Junior High, embarked upon a high school career. Accordingly, dresses were made two inches longer and worn knickers were exchanged for long trousers, We were indeed lucky to have Mr. Hagedorn and the following ofiicers to overcome all obstacles which superiors might place in our paths: Pres.-Gordon Riehl, Vice Pres.-Thomas Grubbsg Sec.-Dorothy Shearerg Treas.-Dorothy Farmer, Student Council-Martin Chmura and Mary Carterg Social Chairman-Myrna Cullar. But grownup as they might have been in their own opinions, their superiors and teachers found them just another crop of silly, giggling, Sophomores. Now it was our turn to scoff at the bewildered Freshmen. We failed to inform them of the events to take place at the initiation, thus causing the poor things a great deal of inconvenience. Many promising athletes blossomed out this year in football and basketball. The following officers were elected to lead the destinies of the class: Pres.-Myrna Cullarg' Vice Pres.-Martin Chmurag Sec.-Dorothy Farmerg Treas.-Juanita Troll, Student Council-Thomas Hess and Carol Cullarg Room Chairman-Leland Houlette: Social Chairman-Kenneth Price. Under the sincere guidance of Mrs. Gaver, the class made this year a grand success and we emerged from the estate of Sophomores to the more dignified position of Juniors. Then in the fall of 1944, the much coveted name of Juniors was bestowed upon us. This title brought pride and satisfaction to our beaming faces. This year with the unfailing sympathy and help of Mr. Frank and our director, Miss Deringer, we presented our first dramatic production to raise money so we might entertain the Seniors at a grand and glorious prom. To carrv the executive burdens this year we elected: Pres.-Martin Chmurag Vice Pres.-Myrna Cullarg Sec. and Treas.-Elmon Smithg Social Chairman-Dorothy Farmer, Student Council-Juanita Troll and Ray Taylor. True to our word, we worked hard and turned out one of the grandest plays in many years, the mystery-comedy, Doctor is Outf' All was ready for the prom and the Juniors and Seniors in formal attire mingled together in happy companionship. It was the last prom for the Seniors, but for the Juniors it was merely another wonderful evening in our high school life. The year rapidly approached an end and now the score was three down and one to go. Finally the same class that entered Fairfield High School three years ago entered their last year of school and on the history book of F. H. S. will leave a superior record, This year we elected some extraordinarily famous officers to help us successfully complete our last year of school without error or any symptoms of bankruptcy: Pres.-Thomas Hessg Vice Pres.-Elrnon Smith, Sec. and Treas.-Thomas Grubbsg Student Council-Ray Taylor and Mary Carter. We displayed our greatest achievement this year in our development of an annual which is believed to excel the size of the Sears, catalog. Since it is the greatest creative achievement for the year. Now the time has come to say good-bye to our school life and we realize more than ever that what we have learned here will prove very valuable to us as we go out into the world. We shall have to leave and the world is opening to us. Page 28 QW!! The gym was very picturesque with decorations of red and white and card tables were arranged so as to form a large heart. A short program, consisting of all the hidden talent in the Senior Class, was given. The audience roared with laughter when our announcer, Thomas Grubbs said the Andrews Sisters would sing several numbers and Larry Bable, Lauren Bowman, and Donald Clark skipped lightly onto the stage complete in feminine attire, After having some trouble as to the tune, the three little girls sang, Bell-Bottom Trousers, Camptown Races, and Pistol Packing Mammaf' Then Bing Crosby, our own Thomas Hess, favored us with the popular song, Dreams, Next Kate Smith 1Mary Carter, sang How Deep is the Ocean followed by Frank Sinatra Grubbs who sang There's No You and he really had the audience swooning. After Kate Smith, Frankie Sinatra, and Bing Crosby had shown such great ability, we decided to combine then and the three sang Lily-Belle. Then Frankie and Kate harmonized on the Hubba Hubba Song. Last but not least on our program were the four Ink Spots fDorothy Farmer, Myrna Cullar, Mary Webber, and Carol Cullarl. These four Negro gentlemen hopped on the stage with black painted faces, white shirts, bow ties, felt hats, boyis suits, and even cigars. Their first number was Id Climb the Highest Mountain. The audience wanted more so they came back with a very fast jazz number, Well, Get It,,' with Myrna Culiar at the piano, Qwe wonder if there is anything left of the piano stool! Mary Webber on the trombone, fa curtain rodl Carol Cullar, the Trumpet player, la funneli and Dorothy Farmer doing the jazz. After this hilarious entertainment the waitresses took orders for delicious chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, sundaes, potato chips, and punch. The evening was concluded with dancing to the records of Tommy Dorsey. Thanks to all who came and made this a great success for the Seniors. mi? iii. Q NJ , Fig! , Jia, FROSH INITIATION Friday, September 28, 1945, once again the day of retribution came to Fairfield. The mistreated of last year were able to wreck their vengence and grey matter and decide upon a suitable slaughter and various tortures for their new teachers and the Frosh. It seemed as though Fairfield really had adopted quite a few new glamour girls, especially a cute little girl by the name of Edward Miller and some very handsome men. Hubba! Hubba! They were ordered to take their shoes and socks off and then the fun began-they walked in ice water and got shocked by electric currents at the same time. Next came those wonderful eats- a very tasty combination of bread liberally coated with mustard and hot peppers. After this tasty combination each Frosh was blind-folded and taken for a thrilling ride in a barrel. At the conclusion of the initiation each Soph led a dizzy Frosh down to the Home Ec. room to a really delicious lunch of ice cream, cookies and pop. The evening was concluded by such games as spin the Milk Bottle and Forfeit. Eugene, get down off that railing, you're suppose to be a feeble Grandad with a catch in your back, a crick in your neck, a pain in your knee, and stomach ulcers. And so we went on with the rehearsal. The dress rehearsal was excellent although all of us were rather nervous and the triplets had a time to get their hair fixed the same. At the evening performance the curtain was pulled at eight o'clock and everything was quiet back stage except for someone's knees which were knocking. The cast consisted of Eugene Beckett, as Grandad, Verjean Chamberlain, as Mrs. Morton, Grandad's daughter, Gloria Yarian as Tilly, a green country maid, Dorothy DeRhodes, as Betty Shadduck, a girl of about nineteen, Ellis Hawkins, as Kip Shadduck, Betty's brother, Clara Miller, Dorothy Toot, and Zelma Dyke, as Trudie, Judie and Ludie, respectively, the Norwood triplets, David Barth, as Jack Norwood, a brother of the triplets, Leon Taylor, as Jim Mahoney, Grandad's friend, Donna Lamoncha, as Miss Abby Higgins, an old maid who is man crazy, Frieda Garwood, as Mrs. -lobe Feeney, a heavy set country woman, Albert Blosser, as a dectective who thinks he knows all. ,Q Recognition should be given to Miss Deringer, our director, and Miss Greenisen, our assistant director.
