They enter every phase of history, from the earliest written records, when the mystery of their seasonal appearance and dis- appearance, and their multitudinous forms and colors, could be ascribed only to the super-natural, down to the present day, when 1 if if , AAAA,AAy i ,,AA, A 2 i ,y IQAA . 4, is A A Q 5 , , isflviisl-12 5 iw. W ffff- fi the light of science has penetrated their secrets and revealed their true place in Nature. Man has always drawn heavily upon birds for food and cloth- ing and for adornment. Particularly is this true in Arctic regions, where a scarcity of seabirds may bring actual starvation to the natives. By furnishing an unlimited and easily-secured food supply in early colonial days, birds played a mighty part in the establishing of these United States. Finally, in the present day, with game birds nearly exterminated in many localities and greatly reduced in numbers everywhere, and with practically every species of bird far less numerous than formerly, man is beginning to recognize their value not merely as an article of food, but for the part they play in protection of the food crops of the nation. This recogni- tion comes late, and in many localities grudgingly or not at all, but the old indifference to bird life is passing with the older gen- erations of mankind. Coming generations, with the experience of their elders and the light of present-day knowledge, must see the wisdom of bird protection, if only as a financial proposition, and if education means an awakening of interest in the finer things of life, then sentiment also will demand that our bird life shall Hy fm Los Angeles Museum. be preserved. 1 19 lm 'N px .Irs 1 If if H x f nt fx 4 .Q f as Q i fl area 3- ggiifi A AA .A ,A, ll fir f f vter 3 Q5 Via r W 3 AA.A . u Theme -++2K++- v The Birds, great N11t14re's happy C07Il7l10?18I'S.U--ROZUE. I HE theme for The Coloniall' of l927 is The I Birds. I ' Z2 4 It does not take even the ardent love of our 'G ' feathered creatures, the birds, to appreciate in a degree at i least some value of this most significant part of the 1 animate world. To one, the bird means song, to one color, to one beauty of form and movement, to one a pest destroyer, and to another some other interest. To the -gif bird lover, the bird is all these and more, the bird is a constant source of pleasure and subject of interest, whose value can not be over estimated. I The ancients held certain birds to be sacred. The flight i of birds influenced human life. The symbolism of birds . . fff has featured in art and literature throughout the ages. ic, fl aa any , Might not a reasonable application of some of these ideas , ' X be applied to school life where youth is growing and . In our book we have not tried to follow a set pattern W 6 too closely, for we feel that sometimes following a theme ' slavishly, becomes as far-fetched as its selection. As bird ' life ties in to human life, but does not dominate, it is to 'I , be hoped that our motif has tied in, to a degree, to the school life for the year 1927. It lf! iflt E141
