WILLIAM BENJAMIN GATES A.B., A.M. President Randolph-Macon College, A.B., A.M. Gradua te work, University of V Irginia We Salute We, the Student Body, salute our President upon the completion of his 56th year of service in the field of Secondary Education. . .. as a classroom teacher, a public school administrator, and a junior college president. Born at Roseland, in Nelson County, Virginia, August 23, 1877, the son of a Methodist minister, he was educated at Randolph-Macon Academy, Bedford; at Randolph-Macon College, Ashland; and at the University of Virginia. In the fall of 1900 he began his career in education as a teacher at Ashland High School, later serving at Millersburg Military Academy in Kentucky, and as principal at Suffolk and Martinsville, Virginia, high schools. He was appointed division superintendent of Henry County public schools in 1915 where he quickly won recognition as an outstanding school administrator. In 1924 he became vice president of Blackstone College and two years later assumed duties as its president, serving with success until June, 1936, when he came to Waynesboro as president of Fairfax Hall. In Waynesboro he has worked for the community in many capacities—in business, in civic affairs, and as a loyal and devoted layman in the Methodist church. With the realization that we, as students, are very young in heart and experience; and with the knowledge that in age there is peace, and love, and a deeper, calmer faith for us to seek, we express our appreciation to Mr. Gates for his example to us and for his contribution to the education of succeeding classes of Fairfax Hall girls—by his instruction in the classroom, his sports- manship, his quiet humor, his unfailing good nature and geniality, his spiritual leadership, and his continuing interest in young people. Given under our hand and seal this second day of June, 1956. 31 — — — — PROPHECY OF THE COLLEGE SENIOR CLASS I’m a newspaper reporter in a fairly large city, and one afternoon last spring I was somewhat shocked when my rather eccentric boss handed me my assignment. It seemed that there was a junior college somewhere in mountainous Virginia in which he, being a one-time afhliate of the University, had a particular interest. He wanted me to track down all the 56 grads and gather a brief report on each. I felt rather dejected before I even began, but when I learned that there were only thirteen in the class, things didn’t appear quite as hopeless as before. When I arrived at Fairfax Hall, Miss Marks, the most efficient secretary, gave me all the information I needed. After graduation from Dickinson College, Kiki Kokolis was married and is now teaching her two handsome sons how to be strictly Ivy League. It seems that Louise Diaz has soaked up enough Florida sunshine to last her a good while, as she makes long and frequent visits to Yankeeland. By this time the vivacious Anne Connaughton has become a top-notch dress designer. She has given up the thought of marriage completely, as she thinks it would be utterly boring. One of Anne’s chic models, Toria Thompson, recently ventured abroad and was met by none other than Jacques Fath. It was reported that she and Jacques made quite a hit together in Gay Paree. Carolyn Cole has advanced far in the field of journalism. Her latest book entitled, ‘‘Man, The Fickle Animal,” has been a best-seller and is being recognized as a potential classic. Sue Holmes is a rising opera celebrity in New York. She has been acclaimed by critics as a most promising soprano star and will appear as “Madame Butterfly”’ in her next production. Another celebrity in the public eye is Sonya Burdick. She was recently given an Academy Award for the best non-appearing actress. Miss Burdick owns thirty-nine plaques and forty-seven trophies. Joan Haugabook, famed woman jockey, became a millionairess over night when she was teamed with the spectacular Nashua last fall at Santa Anita. She now resides alone in her conservative ten- room penthouse. Marguerite Bateman is living comfortably off the royalties from her latest book, ‘“‘How to Grow Taller in Ten Easy Lessons.’’ She discloses some very helpful hints in her publication. The well-known poetess, Nancy Nash, has revealed to reporters that she and the late Edgar Allan Poe are distantly related, and that she attributes most of her talent to him; she’s quite modest about her accomplishments. _ Karen Brusell has done well with her peanut farm in Bahia. She ships the new improved nuts daily to all parts of the world, and has sent her high-powered formula to the Department of Agri- culture for examination. Barbara Smith, after receiving her Ph.D. in psychology, returned to Knoxville as the head of the social science department at the University. She strongly advises psychiatric treatment for all forms of frustration. And finally, Pat Connell made her debut on Broadway recently, replacing Susan Hayward in the leading role of “I'll Cry Tonight.’’ Pat, Miss Hayward’s former understudy, feels now that nothing is impossible if one has enough time and patience. So, for this assignment I was promoted to assistant editor! oF (Top to bottom) “‘Mirror, Mirror, on the wall”... ‘“Tennith, anyone?” . . . Kind of wet, ain't it? .. . Given under our hand and seal this second day of June, 1956. 57 — — — — — — — — — — — — , HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY The time is June 3, 1966. The setting is the palatial villa of Elizabeth Page Stephenson on the enchanted island of Jubip. The occasion is the engagement party of Miss Stephenson. The guest list includes the Fairfax Hall Senior Class of 1956. The first person to arrive for this gala affair was the class president, Sara Slovis, who is president and owner of the Slovis Nylon-Stretch Sox Company. A few minutes later Barbara Degen, the class vice president, stumbled in. She had lost her glasses on the plane and her contact lenses were tucked safely away in her luggage which had been delayed. The next arrival was the class secretary, Bebe Bailey, who is still bubbling with laughter and so pleased that people can understand her Spanish. Next to appear was Jane Todd, the class treasurer, who is a woman of the world but still insists that Virginia is the best state in the Union. Next to be seen was a very attractive young woman, Marcia Kirkpatrick, now married, but the question everywhere is “‘Marcia, why are you so gray?’ Then came Kay Mellott, who has be- come quite famous as the discoverer of a new medicine for cancer. Tito Humber, our most wonder- ful Texan, is still insisting that she will never marry. Ranny Lewis, now a great actress, is working in South America but has flown up to see all of her old school friends. The Cuban ambassador to the United States, Sara Li Capella, is due at any time. Elsa Slifstem, a very successful dancer and operator of a Spanish night club in New York, will join Sara Li here. Mimi Idelson just arrived with this classic statement, ‘‘I just don’t understand Geometry.” Her very good friend, Mimi Finkelstein, came with her. Mimi is now married and is one of the social leaders of Charleston, West Virginia. Two happy housewives, Karen Nordberg and Jeanne Palmer, have brought their husbands and children to see all of us. Becky Busby and Jane Thornton are happy living in the “Old South” and raising their families according to the best Southern traditions. Diane Vacheresse and Mary Anne Johnson are making their contribution to the medical world as nurses. Sally Murray, who traveled with them, is working with the water commission in Pitts- burgh. Ann Howard flew in from Europe today and when she saw her old roommate. Barbara Thrasher, now a happy housewife, she just sighed, “Oh, my heart!’’ Bette Carr, who has been con- verted into a Southerner and a Dodger fan by her faithful friends, arrived with her old friend, Peggy DeWeir, who is now owner of the Dodger ball club and Yankee Stadium. Margie Lowe gave up an opportunity to ride at Madison Square Garden just to be with us for the party. Lynda Stein, an international lawyer, and her roommate, Nancy Bartley, who now has her own ceramics studio, were deep in conversation when they were interrupted by a scream from Barbara Cohen, “‘Hey, Stein, I’m getting married next month!”’ Kitty Patrick, who is the wife of an Army Colonel, was overjoyed to see Nancy Fear again. Nancy leads a busy life at her ranch in Arizona. Marlene Jonckheer and her husband, a South American oil tycoon, have just arrived. Ann Klugh gave everyone a shock as she now lives in the north and has lost her southern accent. Delores Mielke has just returned from a trip around the world and stopped off in South Carolina to pick up Jo Prince, who is a school teacher in her home state. Alice Galt, the wife of a movie producer, sees that her husband makes only the type of movie that she likes. Judy Hughes, the president of the Federation of Woman’s Clubs in Vermont, and Clementina Filosa, Editor of the Burlington Free Press, arrived with Nancy Hurley. Nancy and her brother are operating a chain of used-car lots on the Eastern seaboard. Last to arrive was Carol Harris who has taken a great interest in engineering and could hardly talk to us for reading her big books on the subject. 58 Sea Ree oe ag ident President si Secretary _.......-. 1 reasurer Pees ONonsor nN et = QO, ‘ak. ; ; : B DB Z ! ie A | o ' t ' iS | Pa ' ‘ ' A. a ae ws Zz : i) ' ’ : 2 oO op ; ; O ' — : ' LL, r= Oo : AUERHAMMER, MINTZ ie wy neve Gave eet Miss ELIZABETH PAPPAS TRAN UEREIAMMER 22sec ese coco cece sch eta sg me eae geet Benoa Vice Pres NREL Tink AX SON pee re ne eee The College Class of 1957 RoBERTA OWENS GRETCHEN MINTZ COLLEGE SUE AUERHAMMER Dayton, Ohio ANN-MARIE BRUSELL Salvador, Bahia, Brazil BEVERLEY BURCH Baltimore, Maryland SANDRA CooK Dallas, Texas ANNE COZART Durham, North Carolina DIANE DALE Fort Worth, Texas FAIRFAX JUNIORS SUE HASTINGS Federalsburg, Maryland DoroTHy ILGUNAS Mentor, Ohio CAROL ANNE JOHNSON Ashland, Kentucky Marjorie McCLuNG Waynesboro, Virginia PENELOPE McKay Luray, Virginia GRETCHEN MINTZ Concord, New Hampshire 61 HALL COLLEGE JUNIORS 62 Joyce Mosus Cumberland, Maryland Nancy NEWSOME Needham, Massachusetts ROBERTA OWENS Hawley, Pennsylvania LIGGETT PAXSON Charlottesville, Virginia PATRICIA ROHME Waynesboro, Virginia MARY ELLEN SCHULTZ Waynesboro, Virginia Sa Seated: Miss CHRISTJOHN, PETWAY Standing: B. Tis a symbol of our faith, This laurel chain we bear, And the trust we have in Fairfax; Oh, our hearts will e’er be here. As the day draws nigh for parting, And we list to another call, In our hearts will live the echo, “Alma Mater, Fairfax Hall.” SENIORS: We, the Senior Class of Fairfax, Pass to you this chain of green As a token of our love And the happy days we've seen. Warriors from the halls of Fairfax Warriors from the halls of Fairfax Heap big Indian scouts Gonna beat The team was in a huddle The captain lowered her head, They all got together And this is what they said: You gotta F-I-G-H-T, You gotta F-I-G-H-T, You gotta F-I-G-H-T, You gotta fight with all your might, You gotta fight, team, fight! Folks are dumb where we come from They ain’t had any learning; Stull we'll beat ’em easily Doing what comes naturally. Folks like us don’t never fuss With school and books and learning. Yet we know how to play hockey Doing what comes naturally. You don’t have to look in a book to find That they fear us and it’s on their mind That comes naturally. The teachers down at Fairfax They even cheer us on: They know that we’re the bestest They’ll ever hope to find.
