B. Gates, Sr., on the occasion of their Golden Wedding Anni- versary. They hold a large place in our hearts and, with their permission, we hereby invite ourselves back to Fairfax for the celebration of their Diamond Jubilee in 1963. FOREWORD OME of you have wondered about the significance of our title, CHain ann AncHors. The anchors represent the home and school and the chain which joins them symbolizes the strong bond between these two dominating factors in our lives. For many years a teature of our commencement program has been the adding of links to our “chain of years,” with the re- dedication of the anchors, home and school. It is the hope of your CHAIN AND ANCHORS Staff that the record in this book may help to keep alive our days at Fair- fax Hall. CONTENTS Dedication The School The Administration . I, Mary Jane Parlin, do hereby will and bequeath my “‘cattle and bottles with metal caps,” to any underclassman who claims she is a native New Yorker and can stand the teasing of these rebels as I have, with forced patience, managed to do. I, Martha Terranella, being of unsound mind at the time, do will and bequeath to all under- classmen, my tremendous ability to “‘doe-doe.” Also, I will to anyone who 1s brave enough, the job of cutting hair and taking the consequences afterwards as I did. I, June Ehrhardt, being of strong body and uncertain mind, will and bequeath to Patricia Dean my laugh. Let it ring long and loud throughout the halls of Senior Dorm. I, Martha Miles, not being of sound mind, do leave my buzzard wings to Timmie Wallace with the assurance that they will never fail as a good means of transportation for escaping English class during difficult situations. [also leave that cozy little room, better known as the library, to those who are the studious type—or at least appear to be. I, Wissie Mumma, having all brain and no brawn, do will and bequeath my intelligence to Miss Gandy, my straight legs and big feet to Annie Gil and, last but not least, another Wissie to the Charles Addams house. I, Gleta Bell, being of studious mind, do hereby will and bequeath my straight hair and dis- figured hands to Barbara Baldwin, in hopes that she will use them to good advantage. I, Mary Ann Yount, with heavy heart and tearful eye, do hereby will and bequeath all the fine times I have had at Fairfax to the underclassmen, especially Lloyd Rollins, who I know will make every minute full of fun and laughter. I, Ann McNew, being of questionable mind and frail body, do hereby bequeath my ability to live dangerously and ride motorcycles to Barbara Baldwin in hopes that she will enjoy it as much as I have. I, Alice Chandler, do hereby will and bequeath my love of bridge to Anne Gilman in hopes that she will learn to play better than I can. I, Ann Morrison, being of tall body and burned-out mind, leave my Phi Theta Kappa pin to Sally McCraw with orders to keep it shining. I, Vergie Wine, do hereby will and bequeath my car to anyone who can make it run without its having to be towed in. I, Georgia Hawley, being of unsound mind and body, do hereby leave my laundry list and laundry bill to anyone who thinks she can match it; and my 6:00 A.M. study period to anyone who thinks she can get something accomplished in it. I, Ruth Chandler, being of shaken mind and body, do hereby will and bequeath to Pam Pattie, the exclusive use of my chauffeur and car in hopes that they may help her in getting to school on time next year. I, Sonia Castillo, do hereby will and bequeath my dancing ability to Ethel Garth in hopes that she will use it to good advantage next year. I, Patsy Dodd, do hereby will and bequeath my secretarial proficiency to anyone who thinks she can do a better job with it than I have done. I Athena Kostul, being of sound mind and small body, do hereby will and bequeath my daily “mail on the ironing-board”’ to the most deserving mail-less junior in Senior Dorm. I, Mary Welch, do leave. . .!!! { 36 } PROPHECY of the College Senior Class L June 5, 1964 Dear Mr. AND Mrs. W. B. Gates, Sr.: Enclosed is a copy of the minutes of the first reunion of the College Senior Class of 1954. We thought you might be interested in the whereabouts and fates of these girls after ten long years. The meeting was called to order by Wissie Mumma, who officiated and introduced our honored guest of the evening, Miss Shirley Lampton. Miss Lampton had journeyed from Fairfax to be with us for the occasion. The greater part of the meeting was devoted to bringing up to date the activities of each of the members. In the informal discussion that followed, it was revealed that our president, Wissie Mumma, is being praised by the girls of America for her new “Shope” curlers; a tremendous boon to the hair-curling industry. Presently drawing much acclaim as the famed dancer of “Swan Lake” sponsored by the Ballet Russé is none other than Sonia Castillo. Gleta Bell has just returned from another voyage to England, where she purchased some new cashmere sweaters to replenish her dwindling supply. The latest winner of the coveted Nobel Prize is Ruth Chandler for the widely publicized Chandler’s “Translation of Homer and Virgil.’ Our little Georgia Hawley has just been promoted to president of the “Lost and Found’ department of the Dallas Laundry. June Ehrhardt has reached her goal at last and has been given a permanent place as Laugh Promoter in Bob Hope’s audience. Mary Ann Yount is joyous about her new record in sales of Air-Wick bottles and vaporizers. Congratulations are in order this evening for Mary Welch who just received her Master’s degree from Cambridge University, and has been recognized for her great satirical writings in blank verse. Martha Terranella is making headlines these days due to the recent discovery of a gusher in her back yard. Oil? No, spicy, splurty, Spaghetti Sauce! Vergie Wine is proud to announce that she has an important key position in a special Auto Club, whose motto is, ‘You supply it, we'll wreck it!” The talk of the town these days is the revolution in the stamp industry made possible by Athena Kostul, who invented a stamp complete with indelible inscriptions. After the death of Einstein, it was no surprise to any of us that Ann Morrison should be elected to succeed him and carry on where he left off. Among those unable to be present tonight are Alice Chandler who is this evening engaged in a reading of “John Brown’s Body” at Duke University. Mary Jane Parlin is absent due to the fact that she 1s taking notes at the “You Describe It, We’ll Write It’ convention in New Jersey. Mickey McNew sent a telegram expressing her great disappointment at not being with us tonight but she is coaching Marlon Brando in his new smash hit, “Motorcycle Called Undesired.” Patsy Dodd just telephoned us from the White House and informed us that she would be here shortly, but must finish some last-minute dictation for the President. The highlight of the evening was the favors given each of the members present, by Martha Miles. They were baby buzzards from her Buzzard Farm in North Carolina. Thus the first reunion of the Class of ’54 was brought to a close. Those who attended had a marvelous time and are anxiously looking forward to another such memorable evening in the near future. We would be greatly pleased if you would be our guests at the next reunion. Sincerely yours, Mary JANE Par.in, Secretary. {37} Laurel Chain Song Ww Winding slowly o’er the campus As we bear our laurel chain O’er the dear old Fairfax campus As we pledge our love again. This, the Last Will and Testament of the High School Senior Class of 1954, is signed and sealed on this, the sixth day of June. THe HiGH SCHOOL SENIOR CLASS Witnesses: THE SUN THE Moon ‘THE STARS { 64 } The High School Senior Class Prophecy L Hello, Mr. and Mrs. America and all the ships at sea: This is your reporter, WALTER FINCHELL, giving you the inside dope on inside U. S. A. Let’s go to press! The big news tonight comes from White Sands, Mexico, where Dr. ANN Lutes, B.S., M.A., Pu.D., has discovered a new non-smear lipstick with a uranium base. It’s dynamite! Across the nation in Washington, Connie Norruripcg, the first woman Secretary of State, has opened negotiations with Russia over possession of Berlin. It is expected that Miss Norruripce with her gift for gab will get not only Berlin but also Moscow! Also in the nation’s capital today is a committee of native southerners headed by Donna Wurirte, the Democratic Senior Senator from Alabama. Thi s group is campaigning for peace, on the grounds that wars create a dip in the marriage statistics. In Detroit, Curis Gorrz, America’s most married heiress, has just captured her tenth husband . . . this one is named Bill, like all the rest but his last name is Rockefeller. Nobel Prizes were presented yesterday and Ann G. Orsau walked off with the music award for the eighth consecutive time for her splendid work with the Queen Series. Other recipients were Carnot Rosinson, the Literature Prize for her sparkling novel “From Here to Obscurity,” and Nick1 Bourne, the Science Award for her amazing rat trap which is guaranteed to stop any rodent, regardless of size. Opening on Broadway this week is “Fairfax Confidential” by Barbara VIANO . . . this is the inside story of the inside of a prep school . . . entertaining as well as a gripping novel... It stars the new Helen Hayes, Euizaseru Booru, who gives a fine performance as the Social Dean. Don’t miss it!!! Also on the Great White Way, see the opening of the new movie, ‘‘Big Orange Drink,” with the cinema-starlet, SHetta McCuttocu as Alan Ladd’s sultry gun moll. Sueima shows promise... We predict an Oscar. Other entertainment ’round the city . . . be sure to see the Wom en’s Championship Wrestling Match to- night on either TV or at the Garden... It'll be Crusher Corky WaLLAce and Bruiser Bispa Tuomas .. . a fight to the finish . . . the smart money is on the Crusher but Bruiser THomas, as a contender for the crown, shows great promise. CAROLINE WepPLER, known to her many fans as “Cool Woman” opens tonight at The Latin Quarter with her new band. ‘Cool Woman” is the hottest thing on drums since Gene Krupa and we hear she’s raking in a tidy sum of $4,000 per night at The Quarter. In the fashion world, BarBara Wooster has been acclaimed ‘‘Model of the Year” ? by the National Fashion Congress. She'll be going to Paris for the spring showings and she’ll have to stay there if she doesn’t pay her income tax. JOAN PANCOAST also received high honors at the Congress for her initiation of a new trend in dress—a backless black sheath trimmed in Con- federate flags that will give Dior a run for his money. The great state of Texas became even greater yesterday when BarBara Lucky, Houston oil heiress, purchased Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mexico and added them to Texas territory. Rumor has it that the Lone Star State is about to break away from the Union and declare itself independent. Opinion has it that Miss Lucky will be President of the new country if the plot goes through. Elsewhere in the forty-eight, CAROLYN CARPENTER, Governor of Kentucky, has just declared her state above the Mason- Dixon line .. . ‘‘Kaintuck” will be considered “Yankee Territory” from now on. New capitalists around the nation are SytviA Watson, who has just opened a streamlined bus system from West Virginia to Chestertown, Maryland. (My spies tell me there is an ulterior motive in this operation); and ARMANTINE LEGGETT, who has her own private air line from Waynesboro, Va. to South Boston, Va. She’s flying the planes herself. . . Americans abroad . . . Jutm Cowen, U. S. explorer, has just discovered a new diamond mine in Togoland, West Africa . . a rich find. Eten Duncan, American automobile magnate has just designed a new Italian sports car rumored to hit 210 per. . BarBaRA DarDEN, the only woman toreador in Spain, killed her one hundredth bull in Madrid today to become the World’s Number One Toreador... Anrra KirKPATRICK, JANE ALEXANDER, and SUE KELLENBERGER have opened a new night club in gay Paree. The new outfit is an elaborate affair in Montmartre modeled after the old Moulin Rouge... Stars of the floor show are American comedienne, KATHERINE PirrMaNn, and Can-Can dancer MICKEY Kaptan. JEAN Pootr, top U. S. athlete, has swum back and forth across the English Channel six times without touching land... Bulletins have it that JEAN is tiring but she has broken all previous records. . . Back in the states again... BARBARA PILcHER has won the coveted General Mills Award for being the nation’s best cook. . . Sporting news today features horses—Boop BrearD, up on Native Dancer, has captured racing’s Triple Crown for the fourth consecutive time... Her winnings run into twelve figures. .. When asked if they can do it again next year, Native Dancer’s trainer and owner, CAROLE ELy says, ‘We'll do’er, we'll do’er the first chanct we git!” ... Automobile speedsters have declared Nancy Hupson all-time auto champ . . . she’s the first gal to ever win this honor. . . The Long Arm of the Law reached out today and clamped down on Jupy CaRNeELL, Miami racketeer. .. CARNELL had her finger in many pies but it is thought that she is the brains behind Murder Incorporated. One of her torpedoes, Juby McCCLEsky, who handles a mean .45, was also arrested for disturbing the peace when she began to argue with a cop about the virtues of Sigmi Chi... Also in Florida today, Nanct McMurpy was appointed to the Board of Directors of Miami University . . . she’s Vice-President in Charge of Underwater Basketweaving . . . a strategic political position. .. In Fort Lauderdale, foremost Olympic speedster, JAN Parrerson, has begun training for next year’s games... She'll be representing the U. S. in all the running eyents. Back to Washington... Gate Perry has just been appointed Secretary of the Treasury on her economy record... NANCY BucktEy, Tennessee Representative in the House, has been filibustering for the past two months for an extension of funds to the House Committee for States’ Rights. . . So far, not much has been accomplished. . . Wall Street financier, ANNE BRAMAN, has purchased controlling interest in U. S. Steel with capital gained from coaching basketball in Greenland... Another big outfit, Standard Oil, formerly owned by John D. Rockefeller, has been purchased at an undisclosed sum by SHERLENE Hatt and FRANKIE Bayor. . A new capitalist around the U. S. is Nancy NAsH who just initiated an accident insurance plan covering hockey and basket- ball players... She ought to make a fortune out of it. In the high, unattainable Tibetan mountains SIDNEY SAUNDERS, nurse and explorer, toils away... Miss SAUNDERS has devoted her whole life to the mission of bringing health and comic books to the backwoods citizens who had never before seen a white woman... We salute you, SIDNEY, as an outstanding nurse and an outstanding American. ; Tune in again next week when your reporter brings you the inside dope on inside America... Now we sign off with best wishes and hopes for happiness in the future. { 65 } THE COLLEGE CLASS OF 1955 ANN GILMAN VIRGINIA GILES . ETHEL GARTH SALLY McCraw Miss ELIZABETH PAPPAS .
