While at Fairfax she had been a member of the Student Association, the Dance Club, the Hall Chatter Staff, the Glee Club, and Athletic Association, and was a Cheer- leader . Ruth will never be forgotten by her many friends, and her memory will always linger here at Fair- fax Hall. It was really a gala affair with every girl in the class there. Since you could not be present we decided to write you a note to bring you up to date on the latest doings of all the gals. Betsy CLARK, who is now the first woman Senator from the state of Virginia, told us all about her exciting tour of China. Senator Clark was sent to the Far East to settle the many recurring strikes among the rickshaw boys—and she returned quite successful. The former Sue Cannapay did not have far to travel as her husband is the Commandant of Fishburne Military School. Sue is very active now in the social life of Waynesboro. She spends her week ends chaperoning the girls from Fairfax and her free evenings are spent teaching ping-pong to the cadets. We learn from Marcaret Lane that she is still pinned to her Phi Delt. She has a very interesting job as the head of the Ad- vertising Department of Froshin’s Department Store in Alexander City, Alabama. After graduation from our Alma Mater, Margaret spent several months on tour with Fred Waring and his Glee Club and saw a great deal of the country before accepting her present job. ELEANOR Hartcu, the former “‘ Ladybug,” is now attending Pinke rton Business College on an athletic scholarship. El is sporting a beautiful diamond and she informed us that she has announced her engagement in the Roanoke Times for the fourth time. Pat SEIDENGLANZ and her husband drove up in their baby blue Cadillac with the Texas license plates. They were quite excited over having just discovered an oil well in their back yard. They could not stay long as Dr. Seidenglanz was on her way to a medical convention in New York. She was very proud of her husband’s new title, ‘‘ Mr. Sharpshooter of 1973.” Nancy Wianp has taken her exams and is now a Certified Public Accountant. She is seriously considering teaching Accounting at Lower Merion High School. When we talked with her she told us about her latest fight with Fred but we are sure that they will get everything straightened out in due time. Gaye Hansserry and her husband and their four children arrived in a great rush, having been unable to secure a baby-sitter at the last minute. It was quite obvious that Gaye is very proud of her husband, who is Admiral of the Fleet, and he doesn’t look any the worse after several years of Gaye’s cooking. Marcie Swartz has finally landed a job as airline hostess and she has the run between Teaneck, New Jersey, and Chestertown, Maryland. She said that she still gets a funny feeling every time she flies over Wilmington, Delaware. We noticed a book tucked under her arm entitled, How to Learn Duck Hunting in Six Easy Lessons,” but she never did reveal any reason for carrying this around with her. Barpara O’Neat has just broken up with her latest boy friend and she confided that she is seriously considering writing to Paul. We wonder what he will think after a twenty-year silence but Barbie can be very convincing about why she didn’t write. ANNE Mason, The Insipid One, has conferred more honors on the old class. It seems that she has just completed her grueling swim of the Chesapeake Bay from Pocomoke City to Baltimore. There was a great deal of talk that she may try the English Channel next. BARBARA Harr told us of her plans for a fall wedding which is going to be quite unique, since it is to be held on a fishing boat. The wedding will follow her return from the hospital where, at last, her tonsils will be a thing of the past. June Exruarpt told us with slight embarrassment of her recent debut at Carnegie Hall. It seems that she forgot her music right in the middle of a piece she was playing but she recovered quite well with a few choice phrases such as ‘‘ Well, disgust!” With this she walked off the stage and returned with her music and finished the concert uneventfully. MarcGaret Cannon told us of her plans for leaving for Wiesbaden, Germany, where she will take the position of first Woman M. P. for the United States. Her parting words were, “If my mother doesn’t hurry and send my check, I’ll never make it.” Dorcas Via is now running a Beauty Clinic and is experimenting with a new drug that will make you gain weight. As for her love life she is still trying to decide whether her old Fishburne friend has any definite plans for the future. The former B. J. Lam and her husband stopped off for a few minutes. He is now playing professional football with the Wilson Terrors and she is head cheerleader for the team. Their little boy is water boy and the little girl is the team mascot. Marcia LaBaGu, who just returned from Madison Square Garden where she received top honors in the horse show, is teaching riding at our Alma Mater. J AN Catvert, teacher of Mathematics at the University of North Carolina, was telling us about her trouble teaching Calculus to her students. Outside of that she really enjoys her job. We found Dawn Cunnincua« still in Waynesboro working at DuPont. She commented that she had just broken the world record in shorthand and is taking two hundred fifty words a minute. Gait Tencu, who is Chairman of the National Flower Society, is still living in Waynesboro and is quite busy working on her new breed of roses. Bossy Lou Lovecrove, who had just returned from New York, arrived in her latest creation. She is quite a successful gown designer and is making a trip to the Convention of Designers in Paris. We ended our evening talking about our happy times at Fairfax. We hope that you will be able to be with us at our next Reunion. AS Giee 2G We, the High School Seniors, wish to leave behind a few things we have cherished during our years at Fairfax Hall. Now that we are all gathered together and the underclassmen wait with high hopes to hear the final outcome, we shall disclose the final wishes of the Senior Class. ARTICLE I We wish to bequeath to Fairfax Hall our gratitude for the wonderful times we have had and we hope that when we come back, and we will come back, some of the gaiety and laughter that were here during these years will still linger in the halls to remind us of our years together. We wish to bequeath to Mr. and Mrs. Gates our love and appreciation. We wish to will to the faculty members our sincere hopes that they never again will have a class that was so difficult in the classrooms. To Miss Gamble, whose patience has excelled all others, we leave our best wishes for the coming years. To Miss Strother, who has had such a great responsibility in caring for us, we give driving permits from all the states represented here and invite her to come and visit each of us. We will to the Junior Class one more wonderful year at Fairfax and hope that they will live up to Miss Strother’s expectations and succeed in gaining the new spring privilege. ARTICLE II I, Judy Alexander, being of very tired mind and body, do hereby will and bequeath to Mary Laura Leach that scenic cab ride from Waynesboro to Charlottesville, in hopes that she will some day learn to appreciate the scenery; and to Betz Ward many more of those wonderful week-ends at northern colleges. I, Jane Babini, being of fairly sound mind, do hereby will and bequeath my seat at the bridge table to Libby Booth and hope that she will be there faithfully every night from 9:15 to 10:00; and to Boop Beard I leave my undying love for sardines. I, Paula Bernstein, being of weak and sentimental heart, do hereby will all the fun and good times I’ve had at Fairfax to all the underclassmen, especially Mickey Kaplan, who I know will miss Fairfax when she leaves, as much as I am going to do. I, Mimi Bostwick, being of nonexistent mind, do hereby will and bequeath Dickie Booker’s ring back to him in hopes that he’ll take better care of it next time; and to Sylvia Watson goes my ability to know better. I, Barbara Burrage, being of no mind, leave my ability in English and my seat in study hall to Armantine Leggett. I, Elizabeth Butt, being of cold body and frigid mind, do leave my icebox of a room to Arman- tine Leggett, in hopes that she will prove a better Eskimo than I have been. I, Janice Carter, being Tennessee born and bred, leave Piedmont Airlines to Carole Ely, in hopes that she can make better connections than I did, and to Mary Lib Thomas, a bottle of Airwick for that ride on the ‘‘Tennessean.”’ { 64 } I, Polly Clarenbach, being of sound mind and good health, do hereby will and bequeath the second bed from the left in the infirmary and a pair of slightly used crutches to any poor Junior as susceptible as I am to missing steps and catching cold bugs. I, Martha Clayton, being of little mind, do hereby will and bequeath my love for A. M. A. cadets to Connie. I, Heather Covell, solemnly bequeath the much-coveted package of ‘“Tintair” which Alice von Seldeneck willed to me last year, to Dora Mae Davis, in case she goes to Virginia Beach again. I, Carol Crooker, being of somewhat chimerical state of mind, do willingly bequeath my petiteness, horror of Crosleys and blind dates, to Jean Poole and hope that she, as I, will keep smiling when asked by Miss Crutchfield to reach for the books on the top shelf. I, Jo Anne Darlington, being of supposedly sound mind, do hereby will to Mary Laura Leach my many exciting week ends. I, Virginia Dillon, being of sound mind and body, do hereby bequeath my lovely Southern drawl to anyone who might be able to survive the teasing of the Yankee Doodles through a full year, as I have managed to do. I, Barbara Druhl, being of sound mind and body, do hereby will to Jane Alexander all my wide-brimmed hats and future trips up the stairs from Faxette and also all the money that I’ve eaten up this year. To Anita Kirkpatrick I leave the ““Three Musketeers” in hopes that she will be good to them. I, Linda Elmslie, being of indifferent mind and deformed body, do hereby will and bequeath my ability to obtain dates from the various military schools in the vicinity to Sylvia Watson, in hopes that she will thereby overcome that “‘left-out’’ feeling. I, Junny Gonzalez, being of sound mind and frail body, do hereby will and bequeath my ability to dance the “Cuban Mambo” to Mary Laura Leach, in hopes that she will entertain and teach the gals next year in my place. I, Nancy Grine, being of slightly feeble mind, do this day leave my ability to speak fractured French to “B. D.’”’ Darden in hopes that she will understand what is said in class better than I did! I, Doris Irene Hagers, hereby will and bequeath my long-awaited week ends and clothes for the occasions to Rose Klevansky in hopes that she will enjoy them as I have. I, Sue Hayhow, do hereby will and bequeath my many trips to the third floor to anyone who takes a liking to the Junior Class, and feels she wants the exercise. I, Lissy Hays, being of sound mind and body, do hereby will to Ellen Duncan my furniture polish and cheese nabs; and to “B. D.” Darden and Ellen, the mouse inhabitant of room 127. I, Katharine Anne Hughes, being of unsound mind and body, do hereby will and bequeath one large armchair to Chris Goetz, so that she will have some place to put her clothes; and in hopes that her roommates survive the year better than I did. I, Buff Kane, do hereby will and bequeath my face and figure to the girl who thinks it’s only skin-deep. I, Gail Bennett Kerwin, in ragged body and practically no mind at all, do leave my A’s in Senior English to Betsy Ward, in hopes that she will not do any worse than I did. I, Gwynne Kott, a dejected student, bequeath my overflowing knowledge of Home Economics to Miss Hixon; and my ample time to Mrs. Lemley. I, Sue Lewis, being not of sound mind by this time, do will and bequeath the nerve-racking procedure of dating the cadets to my roommate, Gini Stillman; and to Mrs. Lemley, with a prayer on my lips, I leave Gini. I, Edith Lopin, in unsound body and queer mind, leave to Mrs. Lemley a pair of sponge rubber bedroom slippers; and to Mollie Peebles I leave my place at mail call so that she won’t have to exert any special energy. { 65 } I, Barbara Mann, will and bequeath to Miss Robinson my folded hands when I sing, in hopes that she will use them as successfully as I have, and also two tickets for my first Broadway show. I, Jacquie Martinto, leave Fairfax Hall a Spanish heart for Fishburne, S. M. A., and A. M. A. I, Carlena Matthews, in a somewhat confused state of mind, and with yellow hands, do hereby will and bequeath my extraordinary ability in Chemistry class to all those planning to struggle through it next year, in hopes that they will have as much fun with H,O as I did. I, Sandra Mernick, being of feeble mind and little body, leave the following: to ““B. D.” my ability to diet; to Jane, Ellen, Laura, and Anita, a box of Social Tea Biscuits which they always seem to enjoy. I, Judy Pell, being of non-artistic mind, leave my seat in the Art Studio to a more talented Rembrandt. I, Priscilla Pope, being of sound mind and body, bequeath my ability to play hockey to Adrienne Scholl in the hope that she also may make the All-State Hockey ‘Team. I, Frances Ricks, being incapable of retaining book sense but capable of making a grand slam, do leave my bridge place to Sylvia Watson in hopes that she will continue to display the good old Fairfax finesse. I, Ruth Sanderson, being of sound mind and body, do hereby will and bequeath my quiet manner to Barbara Darden. I, Isabel Seides, do will and bequeath that one hectic week of phoning and my love for A. M. A. to Chris Goetz. I, Lee Smith, with absolutely no mind or waist, do leave my small waist to Julie Sharp and my knowledge of peroxide to Sue McGee, but not even Ann Lutes can have my love for A. M. A. and Carolina. I, Betty Snead, do hereby will and bequeath my ability to dance to Armantine Leggett. I, Jacquie Spalding, do will and bequeath room 111 to Libby Booth and Sheila McCulloch, in hopes that they may charge 50c per person to those students who occupy the famous window, waiting for the Fishburne and Staunton cadets. I, Gail Thurmond, with tearful eye and broken heart, do hereby will and bequeath my motto, ‘‘Never trust a man,’’ to Sue McGee in hopes that she will abide by it to the utmost of her ability. I, Eva Mae Tignor, being of sound mind and body, do hereby will and bequeath my space at mail call to anyone who thinks she can carry the armful of mail to the smoker. I, Weezie Townsend, being of rather unsound mind, do hereby will and bequeath to my room- mate, Chris Goetz, my ability to pass all my exams and graduate without cracking a book, in hopes that she will be as lucky as I have been all these years. I, Sally Jane Trotter, with heavy heart and tearful eye, do hereby will and bequeath the title of “Queen Bee” and love for Fishburne cadets to Chris Goetz, in hopes that she can have as much of a party as I did. I, Pie Urner, being of feeble mind and body, do hereby will and bequeath my ability to endure with placidity to ““Boop”’ Beard, in hopes that it will carry her safely through third-year Spanish. I, Melinda Wabberson, with a heavy heart, leave Latin 4 to Ellen Duncan. I, Victoria Walker, being of weak mind, strong heart, and tired eyes, do will and bequeath my ability to study after lights out and get caught to the new occupants of room 104, and my stock in the coke machine to Anne Oéesau. I, Barbara Zischkau, do hereby sadly will and bequeath my usual pie and coffee at the Squthern to Mollie Peebles. { 66 } At igh Sheil! Bs Prophecy Se Jury, 1963. The Senior Class Reunion was in full swing when we arrived at our alma mater. Jupy PEL, who is now teaching Algebra, met us at the door with an offer to guide our tour of the modernized Fairfax Hall. The new Social Dean, SALLY Trotter, had been responsible for most of the improvements! As we started up the stairs, who should we meet but Congresswoman Frances Ricks of North Carolina, who was anxiously awaiting the arrival of her old roommate, Gait Kerwry, now an English professor at Harvard. We were surprised to find our favorite haunt, the smoker, nearly empty, until we were told that the girls now smoke in their rooms. “Extra, extra’? echoed through the halls as JAcQuir SPALDING, now editor of the New York Times, strode into view. At this point a tall, handsome Frenchman nearly knocked me down. I wasn’t the least bit surprised to hear that he was “Mr.” BurF KANE. We were quite impressed with the TV table models in every room, over which we watched BETTY SNEAD, a jockey, riding in the 5th race at Charles Town. We also caught a glimpse of her trainer, Doris Hacers. Boo Ditton, author of the new best-seller, ““I Was A Yankee for the F. B. I.,” and Karuy Hucues, Democratic National Committee Chairman, were absorbed in conversation as we passed by on our way to the library to see HEATHER CoveELv’s Nobel Prize citation on display. Rumanian Ambassador CArRoL CROOKER and Peruvian Consuls JACKIE Martinto and MarTHA CLAYTON were solving international differences in a fiery debate as we entered. JUNNy GONZALEZ, who was defeated by a narrow margin in the last election is running again for President of Cuba, we hear. We were saddened to hear that PAULA BERNSTEIN and JANICE CARTER were unable to attend. They are at the University of Madrid getting their M.A. degrees in Spanish. Out in the hall we found Lipsy Butt, who had just returned from Natural Bridge where she presided over the Con- ference on Religion in Preparatory Schools. Just then EvA Mak Ticnor scurried by with a hand- ful of mail. She is now Postmaster General. A whir of propellers drew us to the window and there was Lissy Hays landing her helicopter on Senior Dorm. A commotion in the lobby called our attention to the arrival of BARBARA ZISCH- KAU, her husband and nine children. She was followed by BARBARA Mann, who had just flown in from an extended engagement at the Copacabana in New York. Accompanying Barbara were IsABEL SE.DEs, also making a name for herself as prima ballerina with the Ballet Russe, and WEEZ1E TownsEND, who managed to secure the leading role in JANE BaBINi’s new comedy, “‘Fairfax Follies.” Right behind them came CARLENA MATTHEWs and PRIscILLA Pope, who are now registered nurses at the men’s infirmaries at Cornell University and Colgate University, respectively. Ler Smiru, now owner of an airline, flew down for the reunion and brought Piz UrNErR, who, after four years as a Freshman at Bryn Mawr, finally was flunked out. We were informed that another classmate of °53, SANDY MEerNnIcK, was this year’s Pulitzer Prize Winner and that her book, ‘‘His Five Prisoners,’ has earned her a small fortune. The next arrivals were Mimi Bostwick, who has just finished redecorating the interior of the Biltmore Hotel in New York, and Gam. THurRMoND, who has become quite wealthy in the management of her own chain of beauty salons throughout the country. Jupy ALEXANDER was unable to come because of a union strike on her trolley car chain which runs between New York and New Haven. Jo AnneE DaruincTon is driving a truck for the U. S. Navy and we are told that she ran into our old friend, BARBARA Druu_, who is touring Europe with her husband. Nancy Gring, after a five-year trial, finally made the All-State Woman’s Hockey Team. Linpa Etsiig has just been elected Chairman of the Board of Pan-American Airways. Sue Lewis has finally perfected a way to acquire a suntan without a burn. PoLLy CLARENBACH has just received the Fashion Critics’ Award for 1963 but insists that the credit goes to BARBARA BurRAGE who assisted with the designs. | Vicky WALKER, GwyNNE Kort, and Epiru Lopin, “The Three Musketeers,” have just secured the leading roles in the movie of the same name and will therefore be unable to be with us. Sue HAyuow is on trial at present for conspiracy against the state of Michigan and is being defended by the law firm of RurH SANDERSON and MELINDA WABBER- SON. It has been wonderful to see so many of old friends again and we hope that our 1973 Reunion will have a full attendance. Jupy ALEXANDER. { 67 } The COLLEGE CLASS of 1954 L CLAIRE BATEMAN. oto Oo.
