Given under my hand and seal at Waynesboro, Virginia, this 4th day of June, 1949. { 36 } College Senzor Class Prophecy The room is in complete darkness. Heavy drapes cover the windows, preventing any light from entering. The only illumination comes from a crystal ball in the center of the room. Suddenly the crystal clouds, and when the cloud fades away I see a narrow, crooked street of Arabia, and as the scene moves closer, there appears the inside of one of the famous night spots—in the spotlight, singing, is Jane Ackerson. I watch her for a while, but my thoughts wander to her former room- mate and shortly the face of Betty McCoy replaces the image. As it enlarges I see that Betty is working out new bridge rules for her book which is soon to be published. Her television set dom- inates the scene for a moment, and as I turn to the source of the program, I see Dee Cox, who is entertaining the listeners with her well-known comedy show. But wait! The crystal is again clouding, this time to reveal the vision of Mary Hammer, who is Dean of Xafriaf College. Before her is Eleanor Rose collecting information for her feature article which she is writing for her paper. On Mary’s desk is a picture of her friend, Margaret Roberts. As attention is focused on the picture, it comes to life and I see Margaret in the very modern kitchen of her new home. On the table is the latest novel written by the well-known author, Helen Bateman. The view in the globe changes to Helen’s home where she is entertaining some of her friends. Among them is Jeannine Bidwell who has just given a successful “‘one-man”’ exhibit of her latest paintings. The scene moves to the door, and as it opens, Marion Russell, the renowned model, enters. She is gowned in a new creation designed by Tracy Foss. As I think of Tracy, the picture of the crystal becomes that of an ultra-modern office in Connecticut. Tracy is standing by her desk looking at the sketches of her latest creations. Beside her, commenting on them, is Marilyn Brody who has recently returned from Paris where she has been observing the style trends. The image fades and the crystal becomes clear. I have seen in my crystal ball all but three members of the Senior Class of 1949. As if reading my thoughts the globe reveals a swimming pool. There are two figures near the diving board, and as the vision becomes clear, I see that one of them is Rhea Rhorer who is teaching her daughter, Laura, how to dive. ‘The scene changes to a sumptuous Hollywood set where I see Mary Sheffield arranging the coiffure of a movie star. On another set, in the same studio, they are filming the latest Tarzan epic. ‘The chimpanzee, who is Tarzan’s boon companion, is owned and trained by Kitty Bulloch. I see her on the side- lines supervising the animal. After the picture is completed she will return to her social work in Roanoke. The crystal clears again, but this time, for good. I go over, turn back the curtains, and as the light enters the room, the memories of yesteryear fade away. {37} JANE ACKERSON PETER Voss DEE Cox DEAN OWENS Betty McCoy WALTER LEIPOLD RHEA RHORER Puitie BAILEY HELEN BATEMAN Mr. FLovyp BATEMAN MARGARET ROBERTS Ray SAYRE Mary HAMMER ALEXANDER SINGLETON Kairtry BuLLOCH Bruce HopGEs ELEANOR ROSE RicHARD NUNNALLY JEANNINE BIDWELL SAM CRICKENBERGER MARION RUSSELL GEORGE CASSTELLANOS Tracy Foss AUBREY MEADOWS MARILYN BrRopy Myron TRAVIS Mary SHEFFIELD WAVERLY BURTON { 40 } Oe { 42} Pearson, LEACH, McCune, Coo.inc, Miss STROTHER She High School (lass of 1949 e NATALIE LEACH MARILYN McCune DorotHy PEARSON ALICE COOLING Miss EurA V. The play was excellent. Nora Jo Peterson was her usual splendid self in the starring role under the direction of Mary Shep Hammons. The superb music was written in collaboration by Pole Corter and Marian Hammond. The scenery was set in ultra-magnificent contrasting colors by Marilyn Lazarus and Pat Johnson, Inc. Betty Patti, now managing director of Fax Mactor, Inc., did her usual beautiful job of make-up. If the play was good, the audience was better. It turned out to be a delightful reunion of many former classmates of the 1949 exodus from the quaint little school in the Virginia hills. I heard a great noise, and I turned to find ten screaming children being fed lollipops by their doting mother, Sara Nottingham, aided by her ever present comrade, Sallie Eubank. Dorothy Pearson was angrily shushing the children so that she could continue her discourse on the powers of atomic energy in the carrot, with her colleague, Bev Westman. I happened to turn my head, and sitting behind me was none other than Ellen Sinton, now teacher of roller skating at Fairfax Hall. Just in from a swim down the Tennessee River, Janet McCleary was seen. I knew from the smile on her face that the swimming race had been a success, as usual. Seated beside her was Anne Sancken, now president of the Safe-7 Motor Co., Inc. I finally opened the telegram that had been in my purse since early evening, and found it was from Martha Rosenfield, who expects to fly up to New York for her trousseau and wants to make a luncheon date. Speaking of arrivals in New York, I understand that Angie Lee Sanders is due to arrive next week for the showing of her new stallion, Buzzibomb. In front of me, proofreading the next edition of Time magazine was the censor, Lou Schindel, who, with a smile, removed the distasteful language. Far down the aisle I glimpsed Julia Rankin, newly elected ‘ Pickle Queen” of the year. {60 } The High School Senior Class Prophecy The curtain fell on the first act, and I was pushed with the surging crowd out into the lobby. The first thing that met my eye was Barbara Chase, standing on a soap-box, still campaigning for Dewey for President. By chance I saw a group of leading politicians, and in their midst was none other than Marilyn McCune, now first woman mayor of New York City. As I went to grab a snack to eat I saw Suzanne Lynch’s confections advertised profusely. And sitting behind the travel desk, giving the latest news on Bermuda, its men and morals, was our muchly-traveled informer, Clara Cole. Patty-Dear Adkins was seen arguing with her husband over the problems of child psychology. As I went back to see the rest of the drama, Jeanne Marie Jones glided triumphantly past me, just in from her smash hit dancing lead in a new Broadway musical. Jo Jack Pond, newly elected “Queen of the Kaydet Corps,” was seen coming in on the arm of a bellhop whom she’d mistaken for one of her many ardent fans. As the curtains rose for the third act, Lois Casstevens, now famed debater on the Social Problems of the American Family of the South, flew in, late as usual. Esther Brown, having successfully taken over her father’s store, swirled into the theatre in all her glory. Seated far over in a corner, taking up two seats instead of one, was Natalie Leach, member of the Eada-Piece-a-Pi’’ Sorority, Coming into the theatre I saw Joan Houck and Linda Lazzell, who have just completed a new book, called Cada, which, I understand, has made a great splash on Broadway. Well, that’s all the news for now, but tomorrow be sure to read my daily column again. Your faithful reporter, BopBYE Covey. {61 } LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT of The High School Senior Class ¢ We, the Senior Class of 1949 of Fairfax Hall, Waynesboro, Virginia, in leaving our Alma Mater, wish to publish this, our last will and testament. ARTICLE I Section I: ‘To Fairfax Hall, we bequeath our everlasting love and hope that the Senior classes of the future years will have as good times as we have had. Section II: ‘To Miss Eura Strother, our sponsor, we bequeath our love and gratitude for the help she has so willingly given us. Section IH: ‘Yo Mr. Gates, we bequeath our sincere appreciation for his understanding and guidance, which have helped us so much. Section IV: ‘To the Senior Class of 1950, we bequeath our all-night parties on the eve of vaca- tion, in hopes that they can stand the strain better than we. I, Par Apkins, do hereby will and bequeath to Marcia Babbidge my love of Delaware men in hopes that we both will be successful. I, EsrHER Brown, do hereby will and bequeath my lonely week ends spent at Fairfax without “him”? to Rosemarie Esposito. I, Lots CassTEvENs, will to Marilyn Jenkins my ever present love for anything pertaining to North Carolina in hopes that she will always keep up the Carolina tradition. I, BARBARA CHASE, in my right(?) mind will my deep appreciation for the American Indian, their ability of aviation and love for the state which made it possible for Missouri to enter the Union in 1820, to anyone who will uphold its standards. I, CLara Cots, being of sound mind, do bequeath my ability to sleep through the noise on Saturday morning to Jeanne Hughes in hopes that she will lose her ability to rise with the sun. I, ALicE Coo.inc, do hereby will and bequeath my flaming red hair to Sue Bentley and Dell Moore in hopes that they will try my brand next time. I, Boppye Covey, leave my position of chief mail carrier between Fairfax and Fishburne to any girl that will have it. I, SALLIE EuBAnk, leave to Miss Willis my remarkable ability to render a polished translation of Cicero without doing violence to any grammatical constructions; also an hour and ten minutes to do her daily preparation with additional ten minutes to spend if her mind wanders from “dear old Cicero.” I, MartAN HamMonp will my neat room to Jean Manley in hopes that she will keep it that way. I, Mary SHEP Hammons, do hereby will and bequeath to Jeanne Hughes my great love for the Fauber brand of coffee, only hoping that she won’t become as great a caffeine addict as I am. I, Joan Ler Houck, will my now unwavering love for W. L., as a refuge from the vicissi- tudes and complexities of life, to Lucy Fain, even though she got there before Lee. I, Pat JOHNSON, leave, hoping that Fannie Delugach will follow within ten years. {62 } LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT of The High School Senior Class é I, JEANNE Marie Jongs, will my undying fight for the Southern Cause to Rosemarie Esposito in hopes that some day she will be able to argue and win as well as I can. I, Linpa Lazzex, will and bequeath my ardent dislike for hamburgers to anyone stupid enough to go to Charlottesville with food on the brain. I, Naravie Leacu, do will and bequeath my love for the S. M. A. dances to Eleanor Leach, in hopes that she may continue to attend them and have as wonderful a time as I have had. I, Marityn Lazarus, leave my musical ability to Nancy Linehan, and if and when I get above high C, I will send her the rest of the notes. I, Sue Lyncu, will and bequeath my “talkative” disposition to Helen Baker. I, Janet McC rary, will my ability to room with redheads from Delaware to anyone who has the desire to do so. I, Marityn McCune, will and bequeath to Beth Midyette the dashing Billy Pember, for she certainly has been more faithful to him than I. I, Sara NorrinGuam, will the editorship of the ““Rambler” to Miss Hantske. I, Berry Parti, will my ability to ham up play rehearsals and opening nights to Bonnie McAfee. May she do me proud! I, Dororny Pearson, will to Mollie Ely and El Leach my ability to resist all Staunton cadets, not to mention my love for all gym activities and my front seat in Mr. Pace’s English class. I, Nora Jo PETERSON, will to Frances Tewes the ability to fall in love with a Texan in hopes that she, too, will wear cowboy boots and cowboy shirts. I, Jo Jack Ponp, will my kilts, my bagpipes, and my collected poems of Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott to Joy Grine with the hopes that we both will meet on the Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond. I, Jutta Rankin, will the remains of our room to my beloved roommate, Mary Welch, in hopes that it will last through her remaining years at Fairfax: to the ‘“Swordsmen”’ I will the rest of my limited supply of cigarettes, and to Betty Lou Ungerleider and Barbara Fox, my success in bumming cigarettes. I, MartHA ANN ROsENFIELD, leave my good looks to next year’s circus queen, Peggy Flippo. I, ANNE SANCKEN, will and bequeath to El Leach and Mollie Ely my ability to get around and join in the fun in spite of any handicap. I, ANGE LEE Saunpers, will and bequeath my riding ability to Betty Fletcher. I, Lou ScuinpeL, do hereby will and bequeath my faithfulness in writing to the same boy every night to Anne Willis. I, ELLEN Sinton, will and bequeath ‘Twelfth Street Rag” to Millie Thomas. I, Beverty WEsTMAN, was going to entrust my orderly mind to Mary Alice Smith, but, for the moment, I can’t seem to remember where I put it.
