Irem I I, Saran Kino, do will and extend a big Texas welcome to any and all who may be passing by or through the King Ranch, and urge them not to be frightened by the long-horned steers as we’ve pulled all their teeth. Irem II I, CHARLOTTE LEE JoNEs, leave my ability to sleep through college to Mat Townsend, and my ability to get thrown from a horse and be picked up by Mr. Nash to any lucky girl next year. Irem III I, Dorotuy Brusu, will my literature book to Carol Klatt for next year so she can keep pace with Pace. Item IV I, Parry Lona, do will all my wonderful times in sports and on trips to those incoming seniors, and hope they get as much enjoyment as I have had. ITEM V I, Jo ANN KeELter, will my love for the beautiful, beautiful State of Texas to Barbara Hess. Irem VI I, Patsy BoRNGASSER, leave my ability to eat and not gain weight to Jane Ackerson and Xavia Bate. Irem VII I, JAvNE REyBOLD, leave my overnight term papers and numerous week ends to Jeannine Bidwell. Irem VIII I, Nancy Perry, leave my gigantic appetite, fake diets, and other incidentals to Peter Winkelman. Irem IX I, Jo ANN Yount, leave my farewells at the railroad station in hopes that someone will take over. ITEM X I, Mary Lou MIter, will my love for horses to Rita Bedford, a Texan who should always have that in her possession. Irem XI I, KarHryn But_er, will my unsuccessful diets to Kathryn McFarland. IreM XII I, Haypre Grito, do will my punctuality in all appointments to the faculty, my love for music to Miss Marks, and my future success to my voice teacher, and my “‘ snake hips” in dancing Latin-American music to the incoming class. In Witness Whereof, We, the Senior Class, have hereunto subscribed our names and affixed our seal to this, our last will and testament, this 5th day of June, 1948. {52} She (lass “Prophecy It was a foggy, rainy night as my cab wiggled through the traffic of downtown London on the way to the airport. The planes were going out in spite of the low ceiling, which was accompanied by my equally low spirits. Dreading a boring trip to Paris, I decided to settle down before we took off, only to be suddenly snapped from my depressed mood by none other than NANCY PERRY, an old fellow conspirator at Fairfax Hall. After five minutes of violent chatter, we started reminiscing. Perry was stopping over to put the latest link in her scheme that would practically revise tourist travel. Upon our arrival in Paris, we strolled down the Champs Elysees, and who should we run into but HAY- DEE GRILLO, who is now the toast of Europe. We joined her for dinner at one of those fascinating and intimate little cafes where she told us of her thrilling experiences singing in the well-known cities of Europe. She also confided in us that she was now able to reach three octaves above high C. We spent several weeks touring western Europe, and then we flew from Lisbon to Miami. Our first stop was the Hotel Flamingo where we had a good night’s rest, in spite of talking in our sleep the entire night. The next day was provided with the usual Florida sunshine; so we took off right away for Miami Beach. Beneath a brightly colored umbrella we managed to catch a glimpse of CHARLOTTE LEE JONES stretched out under the Florida sun and finishing her book Forever Drifting. It wasn’t long until she shocked us with her plans which were to definitely settle down and go to modeling school. We knew that that must have been a great relief to Mr. Powers! Our next stop was Dallas, Texas. The moment we stepped off the plane we were surrounded by swarms of young children of all sizes and shapes, who literally pulled us toward three couples standing near the door of the airport. We realized suddenly that the shining rows of white teeth belonged to PATTY LONG, SARAH KING, and JOANNE KELLER, and a combination of their children—mixtures of Jim, Frank, and that marvelous football star we had heard so much about. The latter and Patty were tossing a pigskin back and forth as we talked. After seeing their houses and trying to distinguish which of the seventeen children belonged to which proud parents, we bade our“ adieus”’ and raced for the plane as the motors began to warm up. In Alabama we were held up in Mobile by a parade advertising a “‘cat show.’ Never having heard of such a thing, we decided to drop by and see just exactly what it was. Who should be the cause of the commotion but KATH- RYN BUTLER and her“ hubby.’? We were once again greeted warmly and saw an extremely successful show with everything from friendly panthers to fuzzy yellow kittens. And incidentally, Kathryn had each named after her old Annapolis “ beaus.”’ Again in the sky, we traveled to various spots, making a forced landing in a field somewhere in the Blue Ridge Mountains. While the men repaired the slight damages, we took a short walk and came across an old, yet picturesque cabin. To our utter amazement, CHARLIE YOUNT answered our knock with a pen in one hand and several children under her arm who were modestly reciting poetry in unison to themselves and to the world in general. Charlie showed us her many published works, and the interior of the cabin revealed the success she had achieved. Our next stop was Virginia Beach, where we were advised by the president of the Chamber of Commerce himself, to see the show stables of a famed young lady. We might have guessed who it would be. We were greeted by MARY LOU MILLER, looking stunning as ever, on a beautiful horse with several ponies carrying small likenesses of Mary Lou, and also by a tall gent astride another horse. Mary Lou was, to say the least, in seventh heaven. We had dinner with her and her clan that evening, and afterwards listened t o PATSY BORNGASSER on the radio. She was broad- casting from Russia about the christening of Americana, the new Russian pleasure-liner. Patsy was living there, after giving up her reporter job with the Chicago Times. New York loomed before our eyes in all its glory several days later, and the first thing we did was to burst, unan- nounced, into the private office of JAYNE REYBOLD. She did not hear us enter and continued her confusing line of chatter on both her phones. We gathered that she was talking to a new client on one and on the other—well, probably to one of her latest swains. The minute she saw us in her just éoo clever mirrored wall paper, she dropped both phones and embraced us. We had lunch at the Stork, or rather attempted to eat amidst the mad chatter battered to and fro. Jayne had brought us there especially to surprise us, for DOTTY BRUSH was going to model her latest clothes designs there. When she appeared we could see why she had made such a name for herself. We signaled to her and she stopped at our table to chat for a while, but not for long—the “ press”’ was at her heels! When we had completed our tour, I returned to London after saying good- bye to Perry, who headed back to Waynesboro for the annual visit with her husband and children. Who knows what more success awaits these mothers and play girls of 1958? Ah, but we shall find that out at our class reunion in 1968 when the General Wayne has been enlarged two-fold in order to accommodate the future little Fairfaxers ! JANE ANN KiELy, Executor, Class of 1948. {65} High School Senior (lass ‘Prophecy-1948 Madame Lazonga, the crystal-gazer, without any debate Predicted the following for the Senior Class of °48. She says that twenty years from now There'll be some changes and this is how. Perhaps you will not all agree But this is the way it seems to be. Carol Long has numerous cases Of filling teeth and tightening braces. Experimenting faithfully is Patsy Black, The poor little atom has had an attack. Princeton’s many sports, with great finesse, Are announced by Jayne Leavitt for C. B. S. A dye, for hair of every shade, Made by Joan Killian is being displayed. In Ocean City, spending her life, Is Betty Jean Gouldman, the beach-comber’s wife. The needlepoint she started years ago— Barbara Kiesewetter is now on the last row. Taking pictures with the greatest of zeal We find the photographer, our friend Peggy Neill. Teaching diction in New York State We find Ann Smith whose fame is great. From the strain of her students her nerves are unstrung, This teacher of Spanish is Betty Nell Young. An expert seamstress is Helene De Vos, And much of the credit to Fairfax should go. Barbara Swezey’s family forms a basketball team, With Dick as their coach they are ever supreme. An active member of the Ku Klux Klan Is Barbara Reeves of Dixie Land. Pat Ashenbrenner exclaims, ‘‘ No quitting, Randy’s socks I will finish knitting!” Every night at a quarter past eight Lucy Mead sings to another blind date. Lillian Johnson is the greatest by far, In all athletics she’s a number one star. As Marnie Howard rides upon Cardinal III Pleas of ‘‘can I have a drag” are often heard. Ronnie DiCarlo, with greatest of ease, Is now translating from French to Chinese. Pat Thomas and Teeny making elevated shoes. Working together how can they lose? Made Olympic champ for her skill with the skiis Pat Purdy forgets her black and blue knees. Natalie Peckham has a way to lose fat, If you want to find out ‘come see me,” says Nat. A connoisseur of renown of swanky resorts Fran Chamberlin is tasting foods of all sorts. In Miami, Florida, as the mayor’s wife We find Corky Gates leading a happy life. A ballet teacher, at Randolph-Macon Martha Hindle finds every minute is taken. With lasso in hand and a gleam in her eye Jean Martin still ropes every man that goes by. In the fair city of Rochester dwells Elaine Paul. As a model she is beautiful, and admired by all. A portrait painter of Fishburne boys Brings Louisa Landon numerous joys. Ita Frost has taken up smoking— We’re sorry to say she still is choking. Eleanor McCleary ‘‘like a beacon shining bright,” Succeeds in keeping old U. T. going right. Women’s rights are flourishing highly — Corne!l’s president is now Jane Kiely. In Switzerland Mary Clarke is climbing the Alps To heights that would tingle daring men’s scalps. In Elizabeth City leading the band Is Mary Charles Blades, the best in the land. Laura Lee Prince is now happily married Although Sam and her children keep her quite harried. As a Fairfax class our fame will not die: Like a constellation we will meet in the sky. { 66 } High School Senior Snapshots } 7 {6 3 Hii ieee : (etES Z : Ox ae ew, oO a HIGH SCHOOL JUNIOR CLASS Coo.inc, J.
