The USS Eversole, a 2200 ton long hull class destroyer, was built by Todd Pacific Shipyards and commissioned l0 May, 1946, in Seattle, Wash- ington. She is the second ship to bear the name of Eversole. The first, Destroyer Escort 404, fought through the battles of Samor Island and Leyte C-ulf. She was sunk 29 October l944. Lt. lJg.l Eversole, the naval air corps hero for whom the ship was named, was a winner of the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism while piloting a torpedo plane in action against the Japanese in the battle of Mid-- way, 4 June l942. Shakedown training was carried out in the San Diego area for a period of six weeks. The crew was trained in many types of exercises among which were anti-aircraft practise, surface gunnery practise, torpedo firing, shore bombardment, and anti-submarine warfare. A two days shore bombardment of San Clementi lslandV and two battle problems were the climaxing tests of shakedown training. The six weeks training period was completed with a personnel and material inspection by the Commander of the Underway Training Unit in San Diego. ii Q .M Wlllllii SC J I NS ss CCCCQ f , C if S After a short period in the Bremerton navy yard, the Eversole returned to San Diego to join Destroyer Division l7l with destination-China. Overnight fuel stops were made in Pearl Harbor and C-uam, and on l December l946,Sthe Eversole, in company with the Shelton, arrived in l-long Kong, China. After a two weeks' stay in Hong Kong, the Eversole was desig- nated to make a 'mail run' up to Taku, stopping in Shanghai long enough to pick up the mail for the Marines. She returned td Shanghai, and the Christ- mas holidays were spent there in the Hwangpoo River. On 28 December l946, the Eversole proceeded to Fusan, Korea, and spent the next two weeks patrolling the East coast of Korea in search of rice smugglers. l'5 January i947 saw the Eversole enroute to Tsingtao, China, for fuel, provisions, and an administrative inspection by the Commander of Destroyer Flotilla Three. Completing her tour of duty in the China area, the Eversole left Tsingtao on 27 January for Sasebo, Japan. Six weeks were spent in and around Sasebo inspecting coastal shipping. Week end visits were made to the atom bombed city of Nagasaki and to the 'little Pittsburgh of Japan,' Fukuoka. On i3 March the Eversole steamed out of Sasebo enroute to Yokosuka, making an emergency stop in Kobe with a sick man removed from an American tanker off the Southern coast of Kyu- shu.
