Now pausing in reverence at this Bicentennial, we celebrate, ponder and praise this strange glory—this blessing we call Freedom—and realize that the heri- tage of this great dream; purchased by the past, prom- ises freedom in all aspects of our life. Freedom to learn, to think, to choose, to decide, to make a mistake ... to try again. Mindful of the past, aware of the present, and dedi- cated to the future, we pledge this book, not to the laurels of history, but to the vibrancy of today’s free- dom—the promise of tomorrow.
