Captain of girls ' basketball team for 1946-47. TERESE WYLIE Secretary MARY DWIGGINS Class History One day in September of 1937, thirty-seven first graders started to school at Everman. Only two of the thirty-seven are left to graduate at Everman High School. Terese Wylie started to school at Everman when she was in the second grade. Gene Waddell started to Everman when he was in the ninth grade. We picked up several students on the road to grad- uation and lost about as many, for various reasons. In May of 1944, seven students graduated from grammar school, out of a class of fifteen Mrs. Mitchell really trimmed our class down that year. The other seven went on into high school leaving the other eight behind with regret. The four seniors who graduated in 1945 initiated the freshmen into high school. The girls had to dress like boys and the boys like girls. The girls were just as bad off about wearing levis as the boys were about wearing dresses, be- cause at that time you very seldom saw a girl in levis. By the time this class got to be juniors there were only four left. Two of the seniors have gone all the way through school together, with the exception of about six weeks. They are two angels, with horns and pitchforks. Of course Terese and Gene are angels with wings? ? ? Naturally you have many things to look forward to in your Senior year; Junior -Senior Banquet, Junior Senior Hunt, Trip to Carlsbad, and last but not least - Graduation. Adding all the good things and subtracting all the bad things I think the Seniors come out on top after all. With the help of the faculty and the stu- dents all through our school years, I think we can all agree that we have had a very pleasant and successful school life. Class Prophecy Four little figures, trembling from head to toe, Crept into the witches cave, their fate to know. What , saith they, What is the fate? That will come to the class of forty-eight? The old witch looked into her globe so clear, She stirred up the fire and they all drew near. Who , cackled she, is the one little maid Who grabbed her a husband before ' twas too late. Yours , said she, shall be an endless row Of dishes, bottles, and washing to do. Your life will be pleasant, your labor not lost, And now that you ' re married, Emmett is boss. Listen , leered she, as she looked away, Who is the one they call Nelda Rae? You, young miss, if the truth I should tell, Will soon hear the sound of a wedding bell; As the days roll on and through specks you ' ll see, You ' ll answer to the cry of 1, 2, 3. Terese, my child, you surely do know That a ring or a job waits as you go, If you choose the job, a future awaits But you ' ll travel far from the Lone Star State. A choice of the ring will glitter and glisten, Two chances you ' ll have; so Stopl Lookl Listenl Gene, the man, the one among three, The one who can add or subtract x and z, He ' ll work with his x ' s from daylight to dark; He ' ll add and subtrac t them and take them apart; Gene is the one who ' ll dazzle us all By splitting the atom into nothing at all. And now, my children, as a last reminder, It ' s not what fate gives that will make you or bind you, It ' s what you are and how much you care, It ' s the courage you have and the will to dare, So onward and upward as you pilot your star, Never give up and your light wiH shine far. CLASS WILL On this the second day of April in the year of our Lord Nineteen Hun- dred and Forty Eight, A. D., we the Senior Class of Everman High School, being of sound mind do hereby will and bequeath the foHowing to members of future graduating classes. Girls ' Sports The girls of Everman High, anxious to get into the swing of things at the beginning of the basketball season, elected Ladelle Owen to serve as their captain and Ava Thomas to be co-captain. There were about thirty girls who came out at the beginning of the season, but there were only about fourteen girls fortunate enough to receive red suits. Mary Dwiggins came in late, but not too late to earn a red suit. The girls started off their sea- son ' s practice with Mr. Ray acting as coach and with the determination to win and play fair. The Team had theirfirst game with Burleson, October 21, then one with Venus, November 7. Both games were score defeats but not moral ones. This was proved in their three succeeding victories over Haslet and one over Keller. This brought the season up to a turning point with bad weather and hard luck and defeat by Mansfield and Haslet. Then the girls regained their courage and fight and won over Joshua in the final game of the season. The P. T. A. sponsored a basketball banquet for both teams. Coach Johnnie Edwards from T. W. C. was guest speaker. There was an abund- ance of good food and entertainment. Mr. Ray lettered twelve girls with gold basketballs. Although the girls received the honors, a great deal of credit goes to the sincere coaching behind them and also to the smaller girls who kept the bench warm. On April first Ladelle Owen was crowned Queen of Basketball by King Donnie Pittman in a beautiful Coronation, which was attended by the Lords and Ladies of the Teams and Dukes and Duchesses from the grades. Boys ' Sports Editorial When school began the boys decided to start training for their 1947-48 basketball team. They elected Cleatis Bryant captain and Clyde Donald Pittman Co-captain of the A string. Coach O ' Neil called a meeting of all boys who were going out for bas- ketball. The day had finally rolled around that every boy was looking for- ward to. The purple and gold suits were issued, making the boys very happy. Although we didn ' t win many games this year, we ' re looking forward to a district championship team next year. This is because we do not lose any players and have a lot of good players coming from the lower grades. Captain Cleatis Bryant was high point man of the season, having nosed out J. R. Ketchum by only twelve field goals. The 1947-48 basketball team wishes to thank the Parent Teachers Asso- ciation for honoring us with a banquet that was a wonderful affair. Coach Johnny Edwards from Texas Wesleyan College was the speaker at this oc- casion. It was impossible to have the basketball awards to give out at the banquet, but the players received them when they arrived. The coronation of the Basketball Queen was held on April 1, 1948. La- delle Owen, who is captain of the girls ' team, was chosen queen, and Donnie Pittman, Co-captain of the boys ' , was chosen King. Every girl was escorted by a member of the boys ' team. I am sure that it was an occasion which will be remembered by all. The boys ' team wish to extend their thanks to Coach O ' Neil and to Super- intendent Ray for making our season so pleasant and successful. King and Queen of Basketball On the night of April 1, 1948, Ladelle Owen, Captain of the girls ' team, was crowned the Queen of Basketball by King Donnie Pittman. They were chosen by the players of each team. The court was made up of Lords and Ladies of the basketball teams and Dukes and Duchesses from each grade. The court was entertained by tumbling acts, songs, and dances offered by their classmates. Acnvmi £ fafk-t Laa (i e - A h - A o y ■■. ■014 Fcuitiibl TilKltd ■■; Futu.r Bo, I J°y J Anj c.
