You could hear a low buzz of voices ThroughouT The Gym as many Pep-Club members and oThers were Trying To geT everyThing in order. The red carpeT was ouT for Those who wanTed To geT married and The gold colored Cracker-Jack rings were waiTing To be slid .on some sTudenTs' fingers'. Then iT began. The Time was jusT a liTTle pasT eighT o'clock and The people slowly poured in. AT firsT iT was jusT a small line aT The picTure sTand and an even smaller one aT The marriage aisle. BuT by eighT-ThirTy The Gym was filled. You could hear couples asking each oTher WhaT do you wanT To do firsT, geT married or have our picTure Taken'? The de- cision was difficulT for mosT. Your friends were all laughing and Thinking abouT which one of you would be nexT. The rings were placed on The fingers. Then came The big words You may kiss. For some iT was very embarrassing. Be- ing in fronT of all Those peo- ple and you don'T even know some of Them. BuT you and your daTe looked aT each oTher and slowly kissed. As you look back iT may have seemed almosT romanTic. The firsT parT was over. The resT of The nighT was jusT a bunch of laughs and com- paring T-shirTs ThaT ranged from everyThing To The JeT- sons and Mickey Mouse To G-enerra and The UniversiTy of WashingTon. Then you and your bud- dies sTarT checking ouT who is wiTh who. Some surprises no doubT. You hear some small whispers 'Tl didn'T know They were going ouT, fol- lowed by They do acTually make a cuTe couple. Then They announce The TwisTing ConTesT. The music sTarTed and you sTarTed TwisTing. You knew The song could noT be over five min- uTes buT iT sure felT like iT. Then came The side ache. Your ready To give in buT your laughing so hard and having so much Tun you qui- eTly forgeT abouT The pain. The song is over. The judges announce The winners. You were noT one of Them buT you sure had fun Trying. Even if you mighT have had To puT up wiTh some sore hips The nexT day. You looked aT The clock. lT was almosT eleven-ThirTy. The slow songs sTarTed play- ing and Then They once more play The Theme Two of HearTs by STacey Q. YoLj look around and are sur prised by how many people showed up. AlmosT five-hun- dred. Then you look aT Mr. Vermillion. By The look on hi face you could Tell he abouj married half of Them. The nighT came To close. On The nighT of April 22, Ever- green drama class puT on a show TiTled An Eye for an Eye for an Eye. The show was a producfion of Three plays feaTuring Tim McCrea as King Solomon, Frank Vigna as Abra- ham and Jon van Gesen as David. The nighT was a Tremen- dous success for The drama sTudenTs as well as for Dr. Taeschner. They worked hard, overcoming some disadvan- Tages, To make The nighT suc- cessful. Over The years The size of The drama class had decreased y n Eye for an Eye for an Eye abouT 5096. There used To be Two classes--beginning and advanced. And each class consisTed of aT leasT Thirly sTudenTs. ln T986-87, however, There was only one drama class wiTh less people. Had The inTeresT in TheaTre and acTing been losT among Evergreen sTudenTs? When asked This quesTion, Dr. Taeschner con- firmed ThaT iT definiTely had. One of The problems he poin- Ted ouT was The limiTed career opporTuniTies relafing To The field of acTing. In his TwenTy- Three years of Teaching high school drama, Dr. Taeschner saw only Two of his sTudenTs make iT as professional acTors. And only one or Two wenT on To Teach drama. Neverfheless, The drama sTudenTs were noT discouraged. Their goal was noT To make iT big ouT in The world. No, The goal was To make ThaT one nighT suc- cessful, and ThaT's exacTly whaT They did.
