Lust For v Javvid Afzali shows that he understands the English language by demonstrating an LO m Q Q English assignment on the blackboard, Language Arts was a very important suqect here at Evergreen. For students to successfully graduate from Evergreen, they must receive a minimum of seven credits of language arts. Some language art classes were Qth and 10th Language Arts Slsills, Introduction to Literature, Intermediate Composition, Pre-College Com' position, and American Literature, But there were also advanced language art classes such as Honors English, Honors Literature, and Honors Composition. ln a students first year at Evergreen hefshe got a revievv of the basic language art slsills such as sentence structure and the eight parts of speech. During the second year it vvas introduction to literature, and in the third year there vvas classes such as lntermediate Composition and Survey American Literature vvhere the student vvas acquainted with the historical development of American Literature. During the senior year the student was offered classes that prepared them for the college classes such as Pre-College Composition, Reading Improvement, and Readers Choice. A language class called English as a Second Language, commonly l-znown as ESL, was at Evergreen for it's fifth year. The ESL program at Evergreen started at Highline High School but transferred to Evergreen in 1982. The ESL program vvas designed to introduce the students to the English language, culture, and education. The program was designed to help them adjust to the different language, and it also gave them ia chance to practice their native language. Most of the ESL students came from Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. But there were also students from China, Korea, and the Phillipines. Mr. Gaul and Ms. Schaeffer, vvho were the ESL teachers, taught the subjects of language arts, reading, and composition on three levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced.
