A y. ■y -p J r ' - ■Ml,; •1 THE SENIOR YEARBOOK PUBLISHED BY THE CLASS OF 1944 EVANSTON TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL EVANSTON ILLINOIS VOLUME XXVII FOREWORD The staff of the 1944 Yearbook is proud to have the opportunity in the special section that closes the book to give at least a partial representation of the dis- tinguished record of its alumni in the service of the country. Other sections of the book attempt to show how the school has cooperated with the community in the war effort. MARILYN MORTENSEN Managing Editor CHARLES ROBERTSON Business Manager JOAN DREYFUS Literary Editor BETTY JAYNE HARBERT Art Editor JOHN PARKER Editor of Service Section NELSON SHAWN Photographer DOROTHY J. COLBURN Adviser In the Service Flag of Evanston Township High School are many blue stars. Part of the vigor and endurance, the alert brain and quick action, of the American Fighting Man, was developed here. Evanston is proud of these blue stars. There are gold stars also. Occasionally a blue star must be taken down and replaced with a gold one. To those alumni and former class- mates who have graduated cum laude from the grim school of conflict, this Yearbook is reverently dedicated. WALTER L. Thougfi Cfiarles Robertson and fiis business staff hiad almost finished thieir senior collections and Marilyn Mortensen was coordinating tfie plans for a Yearbook of which production was still highly uncertain, not until February did things start to hum with assurance in room 147. Joan Dreyfus racked everyone s brain, including her own, for the literary copy. Nelson Shawn photographed everything from the Christmas Festival to the Girls ' Drill Corps. The art staff, headed by Betty Jayne FHarbert, drew everything but the contracts, which were left to Miss Dorothy Colburn, faculty adviser. 12 In September, when classes met again after a long summer in which school cares were no doubt forgotten, the first days were long and strange. But by the second week the Victory Corps committee was on duty again, planning the activities of a successful and patriotic season. The Girls ' Drill Corps, the Military Training Corps, the regular Wednesday war stamp sales, the numerous drives, and other wartime activities functioned busily again. All senior girls prepared for the future by taking the Red Cross hlome Nursing course, while some, especially Drill Corps recruits, rolled band- ages and made sterile dressings several afternoons a week. For relaxation and exhilaration there were track meets and football games to watch, and fall sports to enjoy in the crisp Indian Summer coolness. Then there were G.A.A. and Saddle Club barn dances to attend, the hHarvest Informal and Pent- angle Turnabout to swing and sway at. Two school-sponsored dances brought a new high in dramatic skits with well worked out song-and-dance numbers first by Pentangle members and later by Quadrangle boys. The drama department put on two lunch-hour plays, including an original one by a member of the graduating class. This play took its place in history as a welcome, although a satirical welcome, to the class of ' 47. Two yearly activities not to be ignored were the magazine drive, the biggest ever, and the budget ticket sales, which initiated freshmen to the business mind of E.T.H.S. f.r Mihbn 104 COUNCIL Tom Boswell, James Home Al Perry, Mr, Young, Har- riet Barker, Tom . FINANCIERS Not content with merely edging out the other high schools in the country, E.T.hl.S. went $1,500 beyond its closest competitor in the magazine campaign. The total was $34,771.40 — over $10,000 more than in the preceding year. The top salesmen For 1943 were William Harwood and Jane Young. The greatest purchase in the world was the slogan sung out by Bruce Galloway, this year s budget manager. Said Bruce, The sales have surpassed last year s by ten percent, and they are still going strong. You know, the Yearbook is absolutely free — if you hold a budg et ticket. 16 Gym Stares Fascinetting T.B. or not T.B. Scene Bees QUADRANGLE Quadrangle ' s activities were directed by a board consisting of Orchard Benington, president; James O ' Brien, vice-president; Otis Green, second vice-president; James Rogers, corresponding secretary; and Fred Marker, treasurer. The boys with O armbands did hall- guarding and lunch-room duty. Besides these daily duties, Ouadrangle supported drives such as the USO book drive, organized Field Day, sponsored intramural sports, and refereed at intramural games. The FHarvest Informal and Dads ' Night, an evening event to award athletic letters, highlighted Quadrangle ' s social program. ■■-tamissai PENTANGLE In addition to the regular work of the committees, Pentangle has carried on war activities through the war collections committee, whose drives for bottle caps and hangers, directed by Donna Aleshire, were successful. Nancy Strader, president. Sue Cattin, vice-president, hiarriet Barker, secretary, and Betty Carlberg, treasurer, directed the year ' s activities. 19 The Wedding. Musicians Good-morning, Dear Pupil. FOOTBALL The 1943 football squad was a potentially great suburban league team. A difference of one point in each of two gomes would have meant a co-championship. The difference of one touchdown and two extra points would have meant an undefeated season. From the squad of ninety-five that reported for pre-season practice came a team that showed its power by smashing Senn 26-6. A week later this team had a chance to show its grand heart by coming from behind in the second half to defeat Waukegon 13-7. Next came a breather with Waller, 53-0. But the following Saturday Evanston lost to a fine Proviso team, 7-8, by a safety. The gome with Oak Pork was a smashing hard game. Evanston led at the half, 6-0, but to Oak Park ' s traditionally great second-half team, lost 6-14. Apparently put on the skids by these two defeats, Evanston was losing to Maine 0-7 at the half, but came back in the second half to win 20-7. hHoping to avenge last year ' s loss, the team was keyed up to defeat Morton. But a super-abundance of fifteen-yard penalties and a tough team beat them in the most heartbreaking game of the season, 6-7. It is indicative of the truly great qualities of the team that it could come back after three tragic losses to defeat its old friends from the north. New Trier, 13-0. A disappointing season but a truly great team. 22 Let us in there. On the bottom. Climb oboard. Mr. Rothacher, head coach, worked primarily with the backfield while Mr. Connor coached the line. The regulars, who include several sixty-minute men, were the co- captains Dick Jones, center, and Erv hHauf, fullback; Bud Lemon and Jim Parsegian, guards,- Jim hlorne and Bob Bliss, tackles,- Corky Johnson and Buddy Rice, two junior ends,- Dick Snyder and Dave de Swarte at the halves,- and Orchie Benington, quarter- back. Senior reserves were Russ Aagaord, Sam Adams, Tom Boswell, Fred hHarker, Art Herpolsheimer, Bill hiaefke, Johnny Johns, Bill Ward, Ed Ziemet, and h arold Schulz. Of the regulars, Erv hiauf was chosen all-suburban fullback and Dick Jones, Jim hHorne, Bob Bliss, Bud Lemon and Dick Snyder received honorable mention. Next years co-captains. Buck Chaney, who alternated with Benington, and Corky Johnson, headed a promising group of juniors: Rice, Seymour, Smith, Theilman, Ligore, Helm, Francis, Shedd and Brumbaugh. r™ ' ' : TOP — Al Perry, Elliott Westbrook, Clifton Merry, Coach Schultz. BOTTOM — Don Joyce, Art Murray, Leon Miles. Harry Jackson While the well-clad footballers were tearing up the practice fields, scantily-clad cross-country men braved the wintry winds to run their two-mile-plus race. An outstanding distance runner was found in Elliott Westbrook, who won firsts in all but two meets. In the big invita- tional meet at Proviso, in which the team finished sixth out of twelve competitors, Westbrook won a second. Other good men who placed in the meets were Art Murray, Leon Miles, Cliff Merry, Al Perry, and Don Joyce. Mr. Schultz was the cross country coach. In the season s record, which follows, low score wins: Palatine 48 Evanston . .19 Skokie . . . . 51 Evanston . . . 24 Lane 18 Evanston ..45 Morton... 34 Evanston ...22 Proviso 28 Evanston . .28 Maine . . .27 Evanston . . .30 25 In conjunction with its war program G.A.A. has carried on an extensive physical fitness schedule. After-school sports have afforded good recrea- tion and exercise for the participants: speedball and hockey in the fall,- badminton, bowling, and basketball in the winter,- soccer, archery, and Softball in the spring. In addition to these activities junior and senior leaders have continued to help the physical education teachers in their classes, and also to collect the tin cans from the cafeteria. At the party on March 24 the 1944-5 board took over the reins from Dorothy Johnson, president,- Mary Davellis, vice-president,- Betty Jean hHorper, secretary,- Marilyn Meyer, publicity. 26 With winter came an assortment of activities and festivities. An exceptionally exciting basket- ball season held the interest of the students and had spectators shouting themselves hoarse. The drama department presented Stage Door as the major production of the year. Despite cold weather the M.T.C. held its regular morning formations. With the approach of Christmas vacation, E.T. H.S. students lent a helping hand to Evanston merchants to relieve pressure during the holiday rush. Some worked part time and some took full time jobs in department stores. In addition some students went to work in war plants, and a few continued their jobs after the New Year. Under the auspices of the Army and Navy, the school directed tests for A-5, V-5, V-12, A-12. These examinations were given at regular intervals during the year. Many boys who took the tests hove been accepted. The music department presented its usual gift to Evanston in its Christmas concert. The chorus sang both modern and traditional songs, and the audience joined in singing the well known carols. On Christmas Eve many members of the chorus assem- bled at Fountain Square to sing carols. t r Ro.rri.ur, LEFT TO RIGHT: Marilyn Reiber, Gene Firing, Marge Halvorsen, Sally Preslridge, Jock Colt, Ann Slurgis, Patricia Harrington, Joanne Foster, Delzia Mae Mulder, Geroldine Zieske, Potty Tucker, Sonia Larson, Wartime material and manpower shortages have curtailed many of the school ' s extra-curricular activities, but the drama department, under the leadership of Mr. hHoword Wilson, continued to delight Evanstonians with its varied productions. The year ' s major production, Ferber and Kaufman ' s Stage Door, presented a cast of thirty-two to sell-out audiences February 11 and 12 in social hall. Cast and crews carried on despite a blizzard during the all-important last week of rehearsal and the ever-present possibility that Uncle Sam would require the services of the director. Other productions of the department have included Good Morning, Dear Teacher, on original one-act by Marilyn Mortensen showing the hardships of a freshman on her first day in school,- The Wedding ,- Who Gets the Car Tonight? and A Night at an Inn , the exciting story of a band of thieves. 28 Dr. Randall and Terry. —now that I am queen— — a young lady with a career . MILITARY TRAINING CORPS Over three hundred strong, the cadets have marched through the year under the command of Col. Richard Juhn. A crack drill platoon, the Corps Rifles, selected from over a hundred cadets, volunteered to drill after school, trained by Lt. Col. James Jensen until he joined the Coast Guard. Lt. Col. hlugh Albers, Moj. William Bissell, Moj. Richard Contrell, and Lt. Richard Cavenaugh, veteran marksmen, helped the rifle team capture the Midwest championship for the third successive year. Sgt Amos Mathews was high man. The jingle of spurs and the swish of formals proclaimed the Corps Ball. Directed by Copt. James Collett, this traditional dance reached its climax when Staff Sgt. Amos Mathews led the underclassmen through the sabre arch formed by seniors. The Girls Drill Corps, formed last year, took on the added responsibility of war work. Though rolling bandages for the Red Cross kept them busy, they produced a snappy drill team directed by Major Jane Denham, commander. Capt. Adj. Richard Coldren, Major William Bissell, Cadet Col. Richard Julin, Lt. Col. James Jensen, Lt. Col. Hugh Albers, Major Richard Cantrell. 30 The Champs Spurs and Satin Inspection Pentangle ' s important meetings of the year were the faculty tea, the fashion show, and the joint Pentangle-Trireme meeting at which Mrs. hHobort, who had recently returned from Japan aboard the Gripsholm described her life in Japan as an enemy alien and her return trip aboard the exchange ship. Holiy wreaths, artiFicial snow, gaily decked trees, pine boughs, and black- board masterpieces of Good St. Nick us hered in the Christmas season. The annual music festival, with both traditional and mod- ern songs, lifted the spirits of all who attended. The cho- rus, garbed in bright colors, presented a cheery picture. The Suburban League basketball season was phenomenally close, characterized by many one and two point decisions. Proviso, the champions, won four consecutive games by a single point. Evanston, finishing second with three losses in ten gomes, handed Proviso its only defeat in League competition. Regulars were Orchie Benington, Jim Rogers, Sam Adams, Bill hiart, Dick Snyder, Carl Wren and two juniors, Fritzie Smith and Corky Johnson. The reserves were Don Arries, hHorold Schuiz, Gene Bruskovitz, Dove Shedd, and Connie Eimers. The coaches were Rocky hiampton and Floyd Wilson. Dudley Horned was the senior diver and Bill Perkowitz the junior. The outstanding juniors were Menary, Burlingame, Am- stutz, Jones, Kellog, Browning, Bronson, and Holloway. 37 Interesting Racket! Relay Mermen 38 Swing Shift Ungh! The first sign of Spring at E.T.H.S. is the appear- ance of the horticulture students in the yard, doing mysterious things to the small pool there. Then biology teachers begin shepherding their distracted flocks around the lawn, where they peer at leaves and furtively look for signs telling species of any tree not an oak. Indoors, pupils catching spring fever (particularly contagious in May) gaze at the sun-drenched cloistersdreamily and so intently that they almost forget to watch the clock. Spring sports are popular. After school, the girls may be seen on their knees near the archery range searching for lost arrows, and others shoot, calling attention to good shots and hurrying pull out arrows that hit the wrong target. The Saddle Club again rides the trail through the woods on horses more lively than in winter. Baseball begins and the obstacle course hardens muscles. It is also in spring that the music students begin to buckle down to the task of learning various songs for the annual Spring Festival. Not only do they undertake to sing tricky American numbers, but also foreign language pieces. This year, in accord- ance with the United Nations theme, they presented a Russian repertoire. Immediately following, rehearsals began for the operetta, lolanthe. Nowhere in E.T.H.S. was there a busier and more spirited atmosphere than prevailed in the music department. Under the guidance of Miss Sadie Rafferty, Miss Claire Vonder Griend, and Miss Ruby Shaw, the special chorus groups, including the A Cappella Choir, Mastersingers, Girls Choir, and Madrigals, maintained their high standards in a number of public appearances. The symphony orchestra, directed by Mr. Traugott Rohner, and the band, under the new leadership of Mr. Fred A. Krueger, played at all-school assemblies, besides presenting their annual fall and June concerts. 40 The first combined performance of thie cFiorus and orcfiestra, tfiis year, took place at St. Lukes church, where various selections from The Messiah were presented for the third year in succession. The Christmas Festival was highlighted by such selections as Irving Berlin ' s White Christmas , and Dave Rose ' s hloliday for Strings . A three-piano number, featuring Miss hlodassah McGiffin, Miss VanderGriend, and Miss Shaw, and the Male Festival Chorus were but two of the many specialties presented at the annual Spring Festival, which in accordance with tradition, was a stirring success. 41 The Evanstonian has few peers among high school newspapers. The eight-page paper is edited by students under the direction of Mr. Verhulst, faculty adviser. Robert hHarvey, editor-in-chief, Mitchell Campbell, and David hHowlett, first and second assistants, head the numer- ous editors, including Gloria Schabes, copy desk,- Dorrie Shearer, news desk; John Rundall, feature,- and hHelen Brooks, interview. hiarry Jackson was advertising manager. Though the Pacemaker award had not been announced before the Yearbook went to press, the news- paper stoi ' and editors held high hopes for its attainment. 42 Literary Staff John Thomas James Horne John Parker Nancy Evans Don Couch James Brown Chloe hiamilton Virginia Richie Bob Seder Tom Boswell THE YEARBOOK Art Staff Jane Rathbun Betty Lou Anderson Danny Grimm Barbara Anderson Photography Nelson Shawn William Malm EDITORS THANK Service Section John Thomas James Horne Chloe Hamilton Charles Robertson Helen Brooks Ann Lovery Martha Bennet Joan Dreyfus 43 Business Staff David Sackett Nancy Norwood Chloe Hamilton John Remke Kenneth Burns John Hoyford John Worth Don Joyce Jack Seder Blueprint Reading Casualties Little Lamzy Divy June in January Black Magic Aeronautics Club Balance plus! Off the Mark 46 Seniors this year will look back on a year of seriousness and fun that will live in their memories for a long time. Forty-four was the year of shocking and glorious news from America ' s battle fronts, of heated politics, of the smashing Russian drives into the Ukraine. Forty-four was also the last year of hops and proms for many seniors. They will remember the grand march at the Corps Ball and the gaiety of the Turn-about, as well as football games at which they yelled wildly — especially the excitement of the last half of the New Trier gome,- they ' ll re- member the great debate over the class gift, the hot-dog wagon man on the corner, the crowding at the bus stop. For these are the little things that mean E.T.H.S. to them. The seniors will recall the snow shrouded memorial trees on the lawn, the haze that closes in the school on an autumn morning, the rain that makes the ground along the diagonal walk puddles of mud, and the sudden greenness of spring. They will also remember the ever-increasing momentum of wartime activities during their last high school year. The fulfillment of their many responsibilities was due to the realization of seniors that this war was as much theirs as it was their elders. Seniors took the lead in clubs and managed successful dances and other entertainments. One project of the senior class was the annual Football Dance, which honored many seniors who fought for E.T.hH.S. on the gridiron. Senior boys left during the year for the services, for accelerated college programs, and for work in war industries. Yes, this is a year that will long be remembered by the class of 1944. fi:,i- rr.sVU §€ 0 i « i.m JJ C £ • ;•! Later the War Activities Commission was incorporated into the Victory Corps, a national organization started by the government. The Victory Corps acts as a clearing house for the school ' s war activities and finds organizations to sponsor each new undertaking. Instead of having a board with several members, the Victory Corps chooses a director as its head. Each activity, as it is taken up, has its own special head. Miss Martha Gray is the faculty sponsor. In its first year Dick Shook was chosen student director. Then came Stan Hamilton and this year David de Swarte. Mitchell Campbell is the Victory Corps secretary. Most of the organizations in the school had some part in the Victory Corps program the first year. This year it has become even more active. Special subdivisions — land, sea, air, home front, and general — were created and pins issued for each division. Two thousand four hundred forty- seven students enrolled. Quadrangle, Pentangle, and Trireme have taken their part in the Victory program. A coat- hanger drive by Trireme and Pentangle netted two hundred dozen coat-hangers for sailors at Navy Pier. At Christmas the girls filled two hun- dred stockings for the D.A.R. and for Bundles for America to present to boys at Fort Sheridan. The clubs have been making bandages for Evanston Hospital and scrap books for soldiers. Trireme girls have kept the school ' s list of men in service as nearly up to date as possible. Quadrangle has provided the Junior Air Raid Wardens, helped in various scrap drives, and sponsored book drives. The Girls ' Athletic Association assisted in last year s book drive and this year has been salvaging tin cans. The Central Council has appropriated funds for various war activities. A drive sponsored by sophomore and junior presidents brought three thousand six hundred gar- ments for Russian Relief. A special physical Fitness program was adopted in the middle of the ' 42-43 school year. Under the new plan, physical education classes meet every day and much attention is given to correcting remediable defects. Con- ditioning for boys and victory-gym for girls have received special emphasis. Girls have first-aid classes. Tuberculosis tests and dental examinations continued in conjunction with this program. A gym show was given this year, with a large part of the school participating. Both the Army and the Navy have given tests here at regular six-month intervals for the A-5 and V-5, A-12 and V-12 divisions. As a result, many E.T. hl.S. boys ore getting a chance at specialized training which they might not otherwise have had. The grades of E.T. hl.S. boys were well above average and a large percentage of the applicants have been accepted. Last year the Junior Red Cross col- lected a special war fund of more than four hundred dollars. Workers sent games to the Chicago Marine hHospital for Christmas, menu covers made by the art classes, and several shipments of mag- azines to hospitals. This year the Red Cross has been making scrap books for soldiers, making dressings, and rolling bandages. The War Chest almost quadrupled its collections— $120 last year and $456 this year. The Girls ' Drill Corps was organized in March, 1943. Under the instruction of the M.T.C. it became sufficiently well drilled to represent the school in the Memorial Day parade. This year it has been independent of the M.T.C, doing its own drilling. It grew from last year ' s hundred and forty-eight mem- bers to a hundred and seventy-five this year. Major Jane Denham is the com- manding officer and Miss Irene hHarsh- barger is the faculty sponsor. The mem- bers drilled twice a week in warm weather, once a week in cold weather, and met once a week to do war work such as rolling bandages, making scrap- books, and filling Christmas stockings for soldiers. Junior Air Raid Wardens were or- ganized to supplement the senior warden system. Robert hHausheer succeeded hiawley Smith this year as director. The junior wardens are useful as messengers in the Air Raid Warden system and are trained to take over when senior wardens are not present. They have also been active in various scrap and war relief drives. War stamps are a big part of the school ' s war effort. Lost year $38,000 worth of stamps and bonds were sold. In May the school received the treasury flag for more than ninety percent par- 78 ticipation. Sales this year have been even better. In the first semester $34,000 worth of stamps and bonds were sold, and before spring vocation the figure had passed $60,000. The first $45,000 was used to buy o tank. After that, each $15,000 went for a Fairchild Cornell trainer (PT-19B). Stamp and bond soles have consistently held to more than $1,000 a week. The overage weekly purchase per student has been sixty- seven cents. Ev anston students are trying to do their part as well as Evanston alumni are doing theirs.
