The Seniors, whose acfivifies never ceased, suc- cessfully financed fheir own Oriole. We wel- comed fhe 323 new arrivals from Junior High School, and fogefher we filled boxes of foys for needy orphans and helped in 'I'he Chrisf- mas Seal campaign fighf againsf T. B. In 'Phe G. The Korean War shocked fhe world, and many of our friends and rela- fives were called fo serve, as fhe U.N. Police Acfion commenced. Gloomy days followed. High prices, reflecfions on fhe horrors of war, fake-cover drills, and ofher reminders filled ihe afmosphere. ln fhe spring of l95l we were Fourfh Termers. The fall of I95l was highlighfed by fhe sefflemenf of fhe salary dispufe and fhe refurn of exfra- curricular acfivifies. Evander was buzzing wifh excifemenf and enfhusiasm. School spirif flourished. We rushed fo ioin clubs and feams, and all school evenfs drew packed houses. Mr. Arlen led a green foofball feam fo a fairly successful season, fhe imporfanf feafure being a vicfory over Clinfon. Prince Hari Jaai, an honesf-fo-goodness prince from New Delhi, India, was presenf af fhe Moun1'-Evan- der game. Unsuspecfingly, we were all iabbed in fhe arm wifh a T.B. iniecfion one day. Elioi' Weinsfein was picked as G. O. Presidenf and Vincenf Piscefelli as our Fiffh Term Repre- senfafive. Evander was fhe school specially chosen fo play hosf fo fhe N. Y. 27 SUMMARY OF THE NEWS i l I T A L- 2 'S - il.. . -I ...ll 551 . an u . Mlm :V gatiiasei-,-' I '21 i . an! l :-1:-g2Ag:,:: 'g:- li , '.i:'y, T ll I ' ' N ,lil9 Hisfory of Class, June l953 Bill Sfurner, your Senior Hisforian, brings you fhe high lighfs of fhe Class of June l953, fhe mosf brillianf and joyous group ever as- sembled. So here we go, back over fhe mem- ories. We enfered Evander in Sepfember I949, 862 sfrong. We were wide-eyed, confused, and full of quesfions. The firsf few weeks were hecfic wifh fheir sfrains and froubles, buf we soon learned fhe ways and means of sur- vival in Evander. Thaf firsf ferm was marked wifh a greaf deal of acfivify. The P. A. had fhe cafeferia sound-proofed and obfained badly needed shop equipmenf. We gave generously fo fhe clofhing drive for needy children abroad, and our March of Toys filled fhe hearfs of hospifalized children wifh gayefy. Open School Nighf came, and we fhrilled in delighf as our parenfs visifed our newly acquired second home. The Arisfa and fhe World Affairs Club visifed fhe U. N. as one body. The News sponsored fhe Charming Child Con+es+, and fhe idenfifies of fhe feachers' baby picfures were soon discovered. Poor sfudenf parficipafion in fhe backing of school acfivifies was revealed when fhe G. O. reporf for fhe previous ferm showed a deep deficif. Thaf ferm, fhe New York Sfafe sur- plus apples were freely disfribufed, and for fhe days following all we afe was apples, apple sauce, apple pie, and delicious chopped apples. We vofecl Virginia Carlone in as our firsf ferm Rep. Tiger monfh was highlighled by Sfairway fo Heaven. The G. O. spon- sored a roller-skafing parfy af Mounf Vernon skafing rink. Our swimmers carried on fhe Evander fradifion of vicfory by winning fheir fourfh consecufive P.S.A.L. crown and Cify Championship. The ferm ended wifh fhe ancienl' proverb You never miss 'rhe wafer fill fhe well runs dry imprinfed in fhe minds of all New Yorkers. We proudly received fhe fifle of Educa+ed Freshmen in fhe spring of l950. The full im- pacf of fhe wafer shorfage was fhen being felf. A glass of wafer was a cherished freasure in fhose dus+ bowl days. The pools were closed, buf nof unfil our swimming feam en- fered a so-called Swimmers' Hall of Fame by exfending fheir swimming sfreak fo fiffy consecufive meefs and being pronounced 'the Nafional Champs. Wowl Virginia Carlone was again elecfed fo represenf us in fhe G. O. A+ fhe Columbia Scholasfic Press Associafion, fhe News received a firsf place rafing, fhe Bridge a medalisf award, and fhe Oriole a second place. Our second ferm was also memorable for fhe dispufe over feachers' salaries and fhe ban on exfra-curricular acfivifies. We profesfed violenfly. Hordes of riofing sfudenfs marched on fhe schools, urging ofhers fo ioin fhem, and fhen fhe forces sformed fhe Cify Hall. Any- fhing for a day offl Riofs and absenfeeism slowly fapered off, unfil franquillify was again esfablished. Affer-school acfivifies were now a parf of fhe pasf, and fhe Varsify Play, Pirafes of Penzance, had fo be given dur- ing school hours. The ferm ended wifh fension on bofh sides. We refurned home for fhe summer vacafion, glad fhaf we had survived our firsf long year af Evander.

we spenf a ioyous day. Then vacafion. As lower Seniors in 'fhe fall of I952, we began fo fl-rink ahead, and so we frequenfly visifed fhe college office: buf graduafion was sfill a whole year off. For fhe firsf fime in fhe hisfory of fhe school, a sfraw-vofe elecfion was held, and fhe candidafes were fhose of fhe nafional Presidenfial elecfion. The vofe was preceded by regisfrafion, and four as- sembly forums. The Democrafic candidafe, Adlai Sfevenson, won fhe poll by 395 vofes, and 9070 of fhe sfuclenf body vofed. Mr. Hannan, Chairman of fhe Physical Science Deparfmenf, refired affer fhirfy-eighf years of 'feaching af Evander, and Mr. Tubridy re- 'furned from fhe Army fo resume his job as Head of fhe Boys' Healfh Educafion Deparf- menf. The Varsifyuplay, You Can'+ Take If Wifh You, was widely acclaimed. Then we vofed for Senior officers. Vincenf Piscifelli emerged as Presidenf and Nancy Holliday as Vice-Presidenf, affer encounfering a sform. Because elecfion resulfs were so very close: several recounfs were needed. Ann Milefi and Joan Massover were elecfed Secrefary and Treasurer, and William Sfurner as Hisforian. The March of Toys, which came 'fo be known as The Miracle of Gunhill Road because of ifs generous response, did if again, and col- lecfed one fhousand foys. Our swimming feam fhaf year losf fhe P.S.A.L. crown, fhus break- ing fheir long consecufive sfring of vicfories. Then came fhe famed bus sfrike, when Union Boss Mike Quill called his C. l. O. Tran- sif Workers ouf on sfrike and crippled fhe cify's 'fransporfafion sysfem. They sfayed on sfrike for four long weeks unfil bofh fhe union and the managemenf agreed fo arbifrafion and fhe sfrike was seffled. Those were fhe days when some had fo make fhe iourney fo school on foof, and ofhers by fhe fedious and complex subway. Some sfudenfs arrived by car, and some holiday-seeking sfudenfs never showed up. There was one consolafion, how- ever: fhe school hours were shorfened, much fo fhe delighf of all Evanderifes. The News Edifors and G. O. Represenfafives af-fended a 29 convenfion al' which Jackie Robinson was fhe guesf speaker. The world ouflook was preffy dim. The Korean War was in ifs fhird year, and fhe globe was filled wifh froubles, 'fen- sions, and hof spofs. Newly-elecfed Presi- denf Eisenhower organized his Cabinef and sef fo work on 'fhe job of securing peace. February, I953, found us eighfh fermers af lasf. How proud we werel Mosf of us were con- fidenf of graduafion, fhough a few jusf hoped for fhe besf. Greaf excifemeni- arose over fhe arrival of our Senior hafs, some of which fif wifhouf having fo be exchanged. We placed orders for Senior iewelry and blazed a regular 'roufe fo fhe College Office. Then 'fhe fun and acfivify of our Senior ferm really began. The Board of Regenfs passed a ruling fhaf we musf salufe fhe flag and sing fhe lasf sfanza of America in every official class every morning. Mrs. Roosevelf addressed a Senior assembly and pafienfly answered sfudenfs' quesfions abouf fhe Unifed Nafions. The swimming feam fied af fhe N.Y.U. meef, while fhe baskefball feam narrowly missed winning fhe P.S.A.L. Division Crown affer a record of eighf wins and 'fwo losses. The insfallafion of new pipes fhrough- ouf fhe building also made our Senior ferm memorable. Greaf excifemenf was occasioned by accounfs in all fhe newspapers of a Senafe Sub-CommiH'ee's quesfioning of one of our former feachers who had been accused of organizing Communisf acfivifies among 'fhe cify feachers. Classes were small on fhe day
