Golf, swimming and lhe ballef are some of her main inleresls. She loves lo lravel, especially in America. New England is her favorile seclion of lhe counlry. Being new in Evander, she says she is oflen quile brealhless and somelimes even speech- less. Mrs. Tiesler, guardian angel of Class 348-8c, was born in Williamsbridge, righl here in lhe Bronx, and slill lives in lhe house in which she was born. She has a bachelor's degree from Hunler and a masler's from Teachers College, Columbia Universily. Her hobby is growing and arranging flowers. She loves her home and her housekeeping, bul she also loves her school work. She has been guidance counselor a number of limes. Teaching, she says, brings a salisfaclion lhal commercial work can never bring, for a leacher can help young people find lhemselves and can help lhem grow, iusl as a gardener helps flowers grow. She likes old-fashioned music and new- fashioned office managemenl. Mrs. Eslernaux of Class 353-8 is one of lhe friendliesl leachers we have known. Al Adelphi College, Mrs. Esler- naux was a philosophy and science major. She look graduale work in science al Cornell and Columbia and did research al fhe Cold l7 Spring Harbor Laboralories. ln her childhood she longed fo be a circus acrobal, bul her older sisler, who was a leacher, persuaded her lo lake up a more sensible career. She plays fhe flule and piano, collecls slamps and sall-and-pepper shakers, and loves lo dig in lhe garden al her Yonkers home. She has lraveled exlensively. Evanderiles will always remember her 'Friendly aflifude and her won- derful leaching. Dr. Schellhammer, Prefecl of Class 354-8a, is anolher leacher of whom Evanderiles are parlicularly proud. A specialisl in biology, he is also a psychologisl, al leasl he handles Evander's prolesfing elemenl wilh unusual in- sighl and effecliveness. We have never known a beller leacher. During lhe war he was a colonel in lhe paralroopers division. Afler lhe war he had lo organize fhe surrender of many German lowns and army unils. He claims lhal organizing Evander's Marshal Squad gave him experience. He lives in Wesl- chesler where his chief inleresls are garden- ing and helping Mrs. Schellhammer bring up lheir lwo children. Mr. Sukoenig, Class 403-8RA, allended fhe Cily College School of Business and lhen wenl lo Teachers College, Columbia Uni- versily, where he maiored in commercial edu- calion. He slarled his career as an accounlanl, bul decided lhal leaching gave grealer salis- faclion. He enjoys his work al Evander, bul he feels lhal fhe Evander of I938 wilh ils high scholarship and deporlmenl was a beller school lhan fhe presenl Evander. An ideal sludenl, he feels, is one who excels in scholarship and deporlmenl, and also lakes an avid inleresl in exlra-curricular aclivilies. Mr. Sukoenig is well-known lo all Seniors for his efficienf and prompl work in gelling fhe ORIOLE pholography done. Oulside of school his chief inleresl is his young daughler. She is very pafienf and undersfanding, re- minding us in fhaf respecf of our former official feacher, Miss Sergenf, who refired lasf year. Miss Sergenf came fo Evander in l9l6 and for over fhirfy years devofed herself fo her feaching, spending long hours affer school preparing and correcfing work and helping sfudenfs who had gof behind in lessons or behavior. We miss her. Mr. Ross of Class 308-8 is a Cify College graduafe who decided in his Senior year fhaf he would enioy feaching as his life work more fhan anyfhing else. She is facully adviser of lhe Trinily Club, and collecls piclures for fhe hislory deparlmenl. She has a flair for early American homes and never misses a chance 'lo visil a beauli- ful old home.
